Is it just every week we are in lockdown or is that it forever and we have become a nation of clappers? Do I need to move?

I agree with @YouDoYou18
It’s a few minutes once a week. Humans are (usually) a very sociable species and once a week for a few minutes they get to see neighbours & get a sense that this is something they’re all in this together and to acknowledge all the key workers still doing their jobs. I can’t get worked up about it, even if I’m not keen on the pan banging.

Cuddling57 · 09/04/2020 20:22

@madcatladyforever that is so funny 😂

Glitterzzz · 09/04/2020 20:22

I also cannot stand it ! We have progressed to fireworks and banging pots now..! I find it cheesy. The nhs staff no doubt appreciate the thought but what they really need is people to listen to government advice and be provided with PPE

BirdandSparrow · 09/04/2020 20:23

It's once a week, right? (It's every night here in Spain) Just stay indoors for the five minutes they're doing it.

IKEA888 · 09/04/2020 20:23

Only on mumsnet could people criticise a lovely gesture because ??
I work for the nhs ... the clap is for us all. everyone ...nhs workers... supermarket workers... people struggling with working from home... people unable to work.. kids struggling.. us all.
It gives a boost to people... has a feeling of togetherness a nd hope.

headlock · 09/04/2020 20:23

I agree, it feels a bit daft now. I thought the first week when I saw it on tv and people were clapping outside was lovely and quite emotional. Doing it every week makes it lose that impact I feel.
Perhaps when this is all over we could all clap again to thank the amazing NHS staff.

bettybattenburg · 09/04/2020 20:23

I actually quite enjoyed it tonight

Chochito · 09/04/2020 20:24

Every night here, it's the only time I get to hear people's voices live and occasionally see a neighbour's face, I love it and often cry.

Eggcited · 09/04/2020 20:24

the first three they showed everyone was grouped together out on the pavements!!!

It's exactly the same on my street. People grouped together chatting, and moaning about those miserable sods who have stayed indoors.

I'm one of those miserable sods, they're bitching about. I'm staying indoors to keep people like them safe, as I spend most of my week looking after the children on front line key workers. Not that they care about the reasons i'm choosing not to participate, it doesn't matter a jot, i'm still a miserable sod.

boomchikawowwow · 09/04/2020 20:24

Most of my street went out to clap. Banging pans, blowing car horns, fireworks. I did it the first week but I really feel for parents trying to get their kids to bed or workers that are trying to sleep. I'm sure most Nhs staff / care workers would prefer PPE than to have people out on the streets applauding them. They do an amazing job and deserve better pay over a round of applause once a week

Averyyounggrandmaofsix · 09/04/2020 20:24

We clap from our upstairs window, it's nice to wave to the neighbours as we don't see them much these days.

DustyMuse · 09/04/2020 20:24

Count yourselves lucky. Here in France it's Every Single Evening.

JellyfishandShells · 09/04/2020 20:24

I was cynical about it before, but went out tonight - just polite clapping and not for long but a lovely chance to see the neighbours ( at a safe distance) on a lovely evening. Lifted my spirits.

orangejuicer · 09/04/2020 20:24

ikea believe it or not some of us on here have different opinions, just like the real world. Patronising much.

One of my neighbours was banging two saucepans together. I want overly thrilled with the noise - I'd just reached a tricky bit in my dissertation and the noise has put me right off 😭😭😭

MasterCat · 09/04/2020 20:25

I've donated to several GFEs and fundraisers for PPE. Haven't been clapping though.

Paulolina · 09/04/2020 20:25

Fuck me has mumsnet always been this miserable?

peaceanddove · 09/04/2020 20:26

So grateful that we live in a very quiet village, not a single peep of noise thank God. Residents here just quietly make a donation.

lowlandLucky · 09/04/2020 20:26

The sheep didnt look impressed

blueglassandfreesias · 09/04/2020 20:27

It would have been much better if we'd just done it once. It wakes small children up and neighbours judge you if you don't do it.

LilacTree1 · 09/04/2020 20:27

peace I want to live in your village!

islandislandisland · 09/04/2020 20:27

Fireworks.. again. Horns blowing..again. Poor cat shot in terrified.. again. Hope they all enjoy posting their virtue signalling videos on Facebook

Boulshired · 09/04/2020 20:28

They had what sounded like a fog horn this tonight and as only just stopped and many are still chatting (shouting) to each other. DP is up at 2.00. It has turned into a competition where we are as to which street can be the noisiest.

TheCanterburyWhales · 09/04/2020 20:28

The fans of clapping should maybe rewatch how the government clapped when they voted the pay cap for nurses. Or read the many (also on here) testimonies from HCP who have suffered under the continuous onslaught over the past decade from successive government cuts.

But I guess that's not as important as getting your me me me instagram vids out there to show what a great person you are.

Actionhasmagic · 09/04/2020 20:28

if if boosts the morale of the nhs staff which they’ve said it does I think we should keep doing it. They are run ragged and dealing with death every day
