Is it just every week we are in lockdown or is that it forever and we have become a nation of clappers? Do I need to move?

OP posts:
Pickupapenguinnnn · 09/04/2020 20:34

Agreed. The first week was touching. Fake and cringe now.

Glenthebattleostrich · 09/04/2020 20:35

The vacuous moron next door was out playing Norah fucking Jones and banging a pan.

This week they've been posting all over Facebook about their neighbours having visitors and going out more than once. And how people are disgraceful. They've also been to visit their elderly parents and went inside (they are incredibly loud and discuss this in their garden).

The 'visitor' is the guys girlfriend who is a nurse and who has moved in for the duration because he lives closer to the hospital than she does so it's easier for her to do overtime.

The person leaving the house lots is delivering groceries, medicine and fabric to make scrubs for the NHS.

So no, I didn't go join them because they are hypocrites who want something to post online and pretend they are nice people.

TabbyMumz · 09/04/2020 20:35

A lot of people have family who are dead, doesnt mean its compulsory to clap every week. And yes, at 8pm, I should imagine people are trying to put their kids to bed. Perfectly understandable.

Snorkelface · 09/04/2020 20:35

It was much shorter tonight, only one firework.

The4ks · 09/04/2020 20:35

Clapping fine, quite nice.
Banging bloody pots, not fine.
Also the idiots who passed my house at 8 clapping and chanting 'BORIS JOHNSON'

TheClitterati · 09/04/2020 20:36

In Spain they clap at 8 EVER SINGLE NIGHT! Once a week is the low key British way.

B0bbin · 09/04/2020 20:36

Yeah, it's a bit cringeworthy but the main reason I'm not a fan is that it is noisy, plus sets off all the dogs barking which makes it hard to settle my DS. I fully support the nhs and appreciate the hard work they do, especially at the moment. But sorry, the clapping is so shit.

supercalifragilistic123 · 09/04/2020 20:36

I'm working front line, and we're all scared shitless. For me this helps, things are really tough for a lot of us. What is wrong with a little bit of moral boosting celebration.

Seriously?! Hmm

Greenpop21 · 09/04/2020 20:36

God I hate MN sometimes. Horrible, cynical posters. Yes I clapped, yes I vote Labour and yes I donated to the NHS charities together campaign.

Mulhollandmagoo · 09/04/2020 20:37

I think it's a lovely gesture, and we do partake in a bit of clapping, we have had car horns loud music and fireworks tonight!

For me it could be a tad earlier! Falls about half an hour after my daughters bedtime so two weeks on the bounce she's woken up 🤦‍♀️ but I can forgive, it's for a good reason

Eggcited · 09/04/2020 20:37

Fucks sake it's one minute once a week.

If it was just people clapping then going back indoors I wouldn't have a problem with it, but it's not.

But here, and for many others on the thread it lasts much longer. People setting off fireworks, banging pots, playing loud music and beeping car horns, then wandering up and down the street chatting with other neighbours.

OatcakeCravings · 09/04/2020 20:37

I scoff at your pots and pans and give you bagpipes - yes I am in Scotland and if you know anything about bagpipes you’ll know there is nothing on earth louder!!

1forsorrow · 09/04/2020 20:37

Drive me mad as well but I have a little snigger when people talk about "The Clap" as it meant something quite different when I was young. Don't know if it has lost that meaning now.

MrsMadEye · 09/04/2020 20:38

Came on to write a similar post, my neighbours are still outside chatting after clapping and banging pots and pans for 10 minutes.

There are 2 keyworkers living in this house who work night shifts, they get home at 8am unwind for an hour before going to bed, get up about 3pm to spend time with family then go back to bed about 7 after dinner until 10pm. They both got woken up as they have the front bedrooms and we are in a terrace house. They probably won't be able to go back to sleep now and the dog is all hyped up diving round the room cos they right outside the window. Hmm

burritofan · 09/04/2020 20:38

The saucepan banging and shouting woke my 1 year old up here. And it's ridiculous on a terrace with everyone standing on their front steps less than 2m apart!

Bunnyfuller · 09/04/2020 20:38

All trying to outdo each other in their ‘support for our hero’s in the NHS’ whilst simultaneously not having a problem with having repeatedly voted for the destruction of the institution by the openly anti-public services Conservatives.

I’m public services, I was going through work emails at 8. I’m on AL but if I don’t go through them every couple of days it will get unmanageable. This isn’t just Covid19 induced, this is business as usual under the underfunding and systematic burning of public services.

Maybe learn the trumpet for next week - that’ll show you care ‘more’.

NellyTimes · 09/04/2020 20:38

Someone put a 10 minute reminder on my (tory 🤢) village's facebook page. My paramedic friend wishes they would all shut the fuck up now please.

PipGirl404 · 09/04/2020 20:38

Thank fuck they don't seem to be doing this on my street.

It's cringeworthy, pointless and if you really want to do something for the NHS donate some money.

It's just another one of those dick waving competitions on who can make the most noise to seem the most appreciative.

Lifesabeach86 · 09/04/2020 20:38

What a load of grumpy posters! Nearly everyone on our street comes out to clap, it feels great to see so many happy faces after being indoors all day. Definitely created a greater sense of community and now there's talk of a street party when it's all over. Not sure what there is to whine about, it lasts 2 minutes, brings people together in a time of terrible loneliness for some and shows support for key workers and the NHS

Lockheart · 09/04/2020 20:38

I wonder how much money they could raise if everyone donated £1 or £2 instead of clapping.

TowerRingInferno · 09/04/2020 20:39

Much less clapping this week. The only ones doing it were my neighbours and theirs on the other side who all stood right next to each other to clap. One of them is a GP FGS!

Hellabove5 · 09/04/2020 20:39

Oh bore off.
It literally goes on for two minutes if that!
stay inside and shut the windows for two minutes if you really can't stand it.

In other news, I love it. And always participate!

Sosadandempty · 09/04/2020 20:39

Initially I too thought what NHS and other frontline staff really need are better working conditions, better pay, better funding, more respect, not clapping (though I have gone out and clapped every Thursday). Now I am so happy to be able to go outside and clap and wanted to say to any healthcare staff who are reading that I am so grateful for what you are doing, so sorry about the conditions you are having to do it in, and feel guilty that I am not the one being put at risk.

I really hope that after the pandemic is over there will be a re-ordering of society and a working towards a better life for all, and more support for the common good.

BrandoraPaithwaite · 09/04/2020 20:40

I got my maracas out this week.

ScarfLadysBag · 09/04/2020 20:40

I don't mind it but DD's bedroom is at the back of the house and we aren't overlooked so there's no noise to wake her! There was a bit of pot banging and bagpipes tonight, but it was quite nice to see everyone up and down the street coming out. It had a bit of a community feel to it so I can't get het up about it. DH would never do it in a million years though Grin
