How does Reddit work?

I'll try to explain it the best I can.

Basically there is a "subreddit" for almost everything. These are akin to the topics section of Mumsnet. If there isn't already a subreddit, you can choose to create one and become a moderator.

The ones I go on (for example)

R/UKpolitics
R/ScottishPeopleTwitter
R/BritishProblems
R/ExplainLikeImFive
R/RomanceAuthors

They have AIBU (Am I The Asshole)

Presumably you could just make a Subreddit like "Mums Of The Net" or break it up even further like MOTNaibu MOTNrelationships etc etc.

You can browse through the subreddits like you do on MN topics, or you can subscribe to some and get a curated newsfeed of the active posts in all your subreddits.

Once in the subreddit it's basically the same as MN. People make posts, which other people reply to. They can also share images and articles.

The differences in the forum:
▪️You can edit your posts (and see edit history)
▪️You can reply directly to the Ops post or you can reply to other users (particularly nice when two people start having a bunfight on a thread and you need to scroll through all their posts manually on MN)
▪️Every post and every comment has an upvote / downvote option. Upvoted things rise to the top while downvoted things fall to the bottom.
▪️You can spot a troll a mile away by seeing how much Karma they have (i.e, how many upvotes / downvotes they've received in their entire account history). Also tells you how long they've been a user.
▪️The rules are different for different subs and the moderation is generally less... strange... like it can be on here.

BUT it's predominantly a US site, primarily a younger, socialist leaning, more male dominated crowd. That's in my experience anyway. So the demographics are different - but the demographics do vary depending on what subreddits you frequent.

For example the r/Harlots (Starz TV series) people are gonna be totally different from the r/EntitledParents people or the r/UnpopularOpinion people.

Or the r/UKLab people 😂

Hope that helps!

Pinterest.
Couple of NHS ones.

Queenlish · 08/04/2020 23:43

I really like it so far.

Peopleshouses · 08/04/2020 23:44

Oh god I don't want mnet to go, I've been on it for 15 years and really like it, I couldn't cope with something new Sad

PickAChew · 08/04/2020 23:47

How reddit works:

Someone links you to an interesting subreddit so you go there, work out how to joint, maybe post a bit.
Some kittens on your home page amuse you, so you upvote them, maybe go and post.
Something else takes your fancy, so you might reply and then get burnt, for no good reason.
You realise that you have no choice about whether the jokes appear on your home page and they're all pretty offensive so all you can do is downvote them.
Look, more kittens!
You do find other genuinely interesting stuff, but then can't find it, or your posts, again, for about 3 weeks.

So much like mumsnet, but with worse jokes and more kittens.

Enjoy.

I like Reddit. Can make me laugh at times, especially one time when a random bloke dropped a dick pic in the crochet subreddit. It was deleted very quickly so I don't know how many saw it.

And if anyone likes reading about cheeky fuckers, the r/TalesFromTheFrontDesk might provide a substitute, also r/TalesFromFastFood.

I also like r/spooky_stories.

MN was the first forum I used, so I'm not sure about any others.

Although I like reading Not Always Right, and you can have discussions in the comments.

QuaffthisKindNepenthe · 08/04/2020 23:52

I would probably begin my next project tbh. Nothing can really replace MN.

I suspect MN are overegging how dire the situation is, though.

GreytExpectations · 09/04/2020 00:06

Oh I really hope mumsnetters don't all flock to reddit and ruin it for me 🙄

PickAChew · 09/04/2020 00:09

I rather love catslaps

And of course, Maru - my favourite cat in the whole world www.reddit.com/r/maru/

Try instagramreality too, makes me laugh daily!

avamiah · 09/04/2020 00:17

I love MN , I have been a member on here for years .

AgeLikeWine · 09/04/2020 00:22

@WotchaTalkinBoutWillis Pistonheads is a car based forum which also covers many other topics & has a predominantly UK based male membership.

It has many similarities with MN, in that its membership is overwhelmingly affluent & middle class. Politically, however, it is mainly right wing Tory / libertarian / pro-Brexit.

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 09/04/2020 00:28

& has a predominantly UK based male membership

Oh, OK, that makes sense in the way it's been suggested to me go there Grin
Glad to know it's nothing too weird or non clickable lol and just another forum

Im confused too. Justine explains it on the thread but it’s very surprising to me that a huge site like mn can be struggling so much after just a few weeks
This, me too.
What?!
I mean, it's never been said that should donate before and I've been here since approx 2013.
I know they've been losing big ads lately (Flora) for example but I'm still here.
Negative publicity and all that.
Still, if it goes to a fiver a month that'll have to cure my addiction lol!

BestZebbie · 09/04/2020 00:42

I came here from Ravelry when I lost my knitting time to having a baby, Id probably go back there.

drunkyhumptydumpty · 09/04/2020 00:45

Reddit and BabyCentre.

BC is basically the same.
It has and AIBU and WYOO?
They also have like buttons, better reply functions, threads can go over 1000 posts and it's peer monitored so much fairer deleting etc.

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 09/04/2020 00:46

Tattle Life, unquestionably

I've only ever visited Tattlelife when it's been linked on here and promptly clicked off again.
Bitchy, gossipy, plain nasty tearing people down stuff and can't be arsed with that.

user3274826 · 09/04/2020 00:58

Probably Reddit.

Anyone remember when there used to be three big UK parent forums? Mumsnet, Babyworld, Netmums. Babyworld was the middle ground, it allowed 'tickers' and those cheesy montages like Netmums but it wasn't as full of Huns. It had a great discuss/debate/deliberate topic that had the reputation similar to the nest of vipers on AIBU.

What happened to Babyworld? Oh...I remember, they introduced the option of paying premium for parts of the forums and everyone jumped ship.

Lynda07 · 09/04/2020 01:30

I wouldn't bother. I do post on a small forum, have been on that for years so I'd carry on with it. I was OK before joining Mumsnet and will be OK if it closes. Having said that I've learned a lot on here - sometimes things I wish I hadn't Grin.
