Just that really.

OP posts:

@MamaMeeAh they are showing how piss easy it is to have a forum with all the features MN have said for over a decade are impossible. And they've done it all for free.
The reality is MN apparently has 12 tech peeps who are doing an embarrassingly poor job.
This board is waaaayyyy behind on functionality.
It's wayyy behind on all the other chat forums.

But the users have put up and shit up for years. However. Now they have the audacity to try and charge for this.

MagicKingdomDizzy · 11/04/2020 09:15

Given that Mums.Chat looks like it was set up by one person in half an hour, it's functions are much better than Mumsnet. I've been waiting for better emojis, better quoting, a like button and an edit button on here for ages.

Seeing that Mumsnet have so many technical staff you would think it would have been possible to do ages ago. So why wouldn't they? I do like Mumsnet, but more for the posters than the site, as it's quite antiquated. So if other posters leave I will most likely follow.

MarshaBradyo · 11/04/2020 09:43

The email and thread have caused lots to leave to new sites, I’m not sure the gain from the few that have given already will be worth it.

Saladaysior · 11/04/2020 10:16

If (when?) MN in its current form disappears I don’t think I would look for anything to replace it.

If there one thing the last 3 weeks have taught me it’s that the real value of technology is a) to access news and factual information from a reliable source b) education. Most other things are an avoidance of real life, and at worst quite addictive and/or misleading.

I’ve even pretty much come off social media because I was fed up of the virtue signalling, people reminding us to stay indoors (like the fuck we don’t know that)

Reddit and Tattlelife don’t appeal to me, though I expect the latter could quickly become a real time waster. If I want information or advice I tend to google for reliable sources. For entertainment, I’ll continue to get that from tv, very occasionally YouTube but most of all from real life.

Current events have made me realise how actual interaction with real people is the most valuable thing of all. So in all honestly if MN goes I suspect some of us might even breathe a sigh of relief that we won’t be drawn into it, particularly as over recent years it’s moved from genuinely quite entertaining threads to pointless circular arguments

Umnoway · 11/04/2020 10:22

None. I used a really crap parenting one years ago that was super sanctimonious, they deleted any thread that mentioned abortion incase it hurt someone who had lost a pregnancy... I didn’t stick around for long.

Umnoway · 11/04/2020 10:23

I don’t really get reddit. I tried it once, it just baffled me.

daisyjgrey · 11/04/2020 10:25

No idea but I'd get a lot more work done.

QuaffthisKindNepenthe · 11/04/2020 10:27

Absolutely.

Luc1nda · 11/04/2020 10:30

It is 100% set up by Tattle.

How do you know? (Not saying you're wrong, just wondering). Another poster mentioned how it has all the bells and whistles, impressive for being knocked together in half an hour. I think the admin said running forums was their business. So once they have a template they can apply it to a new context?

Saladaysior · 11/04/2020 10:43

It’s also made me more aware than ever that the site relies on people almost becoming addictive and mindlessly scrolling. I de-registered after the major hacking episode and seeing the shockingly flippant response from MNHQ. I stayed off for over a year and then against my better judgement registered again... god knows why, I guess as it’s just a mindless ‘why not?’ Maybe I thought during my time off the site would have got it’s act together, sorted security and brought itself up to date. Feels like it’s had so many missed opportunities to sort things, not only technically but also in terms of its policies on moderation and it’s general ethos. I said on another thread on this subject, it feels like MN grew and grew into a huge thing and it’s founders mistakenly thought that was all that mattered - quantity over quality. A successful business is a lot more than just growth, it needs to keep in touch with the people who’ve made it successful, it needs to be responsive to concerns and requests. It just feels so complacent... like a cosy group of privileged women who had a good idea originally but have tried to live off that original idea in a little bubble, not listening to the people who made it a success.

Even now I feel slightly uncomfortable writing that - is that perhaps because they’ve fostered this cosy image as if we’re all personal friends of MNHQ and we should ‘be there for them’? Is that what’s drawn some people into parting with subscriptions without any clear guarantee of what they’re paying for?

MarshaBradyo · 11/04/2020 10:52

Salad I’m on the same page with a lot of what you say. When this ends I’m cold turkey and I’m careful with what media I look at. These days it’s pretty much R4. I’d be in trouble without that keeps me on a more even keel. I feel better without sites and platforms and this is last one.

I always knew my typing earned someone else money but I was ok with that transaction. Really not sure why people have leapt so quickly to pay. It reminds me of IG cash drives where people are rinsed for money.

Ninkanink · 11/04/2020 11:05

Yeah I purposefully wouldn’t go elsewhere. I’d start doing all those things I’ve been meaning to do for years.

MamaMeeAh · 11/04/2020 11:06

Tattle admins said they were going to do it and 5 mins later they did. It’s an exact replica of Tattle.

BeijingBikini · 11/04/2020 11:12

I'm shocked that so many have found it "supportive". I find it's only supportive if you're struggling with your baby/MIL or your husband has cheated. Otherwise you get absolutely rinsed, it's full of personal attacks and people take what you say out of context to suit their own agenda.

Both times I posted threads asking for advice, I ended up staying up till 2am with extreme stress/panic at the nasty responses (like telling me to leave my husband who had got abused, because men can't possibly be abused so he must be lying) and both times I just wrote to MNHQ asking to delete the threads. Then the posters ripped me a new one because "we've invested time into replying and you don't like the response". Well, yes, if the responses send the OP into a state of mental breakdown then that's slightly more important than the fact you took 5 mins to write a really nasty post.

I only go on here because I'm addicted, and I don't smoke/drink/binge eat so I need some sort of vice! But it's turning into Daily Mail comments so there's no way in hell I'm paying.

ElspethFlashman · 11/04/2020 13:05

BeijingBikini if loving the Love Island subbreddit is wrong, then I don't wanna be right.

I used to be watching the episode with the Live Watching thread open on my phone. People were absolutely hilarious.

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 11/04/2020 18:07

Not when I really really needed it it wasn’t.

Expect your post to be deleted, NewHorizons ... for whatever reason, HQ clearly aren't prepared to have that website linked on here

Saladaysior · 12/04/2020 11:58

Think you need to pm because the link will be zapped

Frankiecandle · 12/04/2020 11:59

All the huns seem to be on that poundshop mumsnet, so it's probably doing mumsnet a favour.

they would do better to tout it on netmums.

NewHorizons2020 · 12/04/2020 12:02

@Frankiecandle yes the poundshop site that doesn’t bulk buy advertising hence no tobacco or soft porn. You paying then for a site that’s charging for content that you provide ? Biscuit

MamaBearLockdown · 12/04/2020 12:05

oh, thank you, I only knew about reddit, I am not sure how long the rest will stay put but I hope more people see it.

Frankiecandle · 12/04/2020 12:10

You don't have to pay for MN. I don't actually have a problem with paying for premium membership of a forum though.

Would I pay for MN,? no.

Would I join a cheap rip off of MN? Also no.
