Zoom ettiquiete

I do a few hours of maths tuition a week as a volunteer working with looked after children. Since lockdown I have been doing this via Zoom.

One of the foster carers has been recording the sessions and told me this was to share with her own children which I wasn't keen on but didn't object to. I have now found out that her sister who runs a big scale tutoring business is sending these videos out as part of her weekly work pack for which she charges £30 (they get a class lesson as well).

AIBU to think this is not ok and they should have asked? When I questioned her I was told 'we're all in the same boat and need to help each other'. I have had to shut my business and have no income at present so I whilst I happy to volunteer and help vulnerable students I do not want to be creating content for a private business to use for free. AIBU?

That's outrageous! I would not be happy!

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 08/04/2020 11:55

Yanbu at all.

If 'we need to help each other' why on earth didnt they ask you if it was ok and offer you money for doing this.

They are helping themselves not each other.

That is beyond rude Shock

OscarWildesCat · 08/04/2020 11:57

Wow, no way, if we are all helping each other then surely you are entitled to some of the money shes charging for the packs since you're doing the work?, she is a CF and you YADNBU. Bloody hell.

Rhubardandcustard · 08/04/2020 11:58

I would contact her and say you have contacted a solicitor and if she doesn’t stop sharing these videos you will take the matter further. Outrageous.

SpillTheTeaa · 08/04/2020 11:58

Omg YADNBU! What a CF!
She should give you that money wtaf!

UnaCorda · 08/04/2020 11:59

Absolutely not ok. Are your students visible on the recording?

MaeDanvers · 08/04/2020 12:00

You haven't shared videos with looked after children in them have you?

Caterinaballerina · 08/04/2020 12:00

Trying desperately to think of something you could say in the call which makes it unsharable.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 08/04/2020 12:00

Surely she is breaking some kind of GDPR by stealing and sharing these without your permission?

Sexnotgender · 08/04/2020 12:01

we're all in the same boat and need to help each other'.

Message back that you totally agree and should you send your bank details so that her sister can help you out too as you’ve had to close your business and she’s using your content for profit.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 08/04/2020 12:02

Especially as it involves looked after children, this could be a safeguarding issue too, are they /their voices in the videos?

ZoeandChandon · 08/04/2020 12:02

Seems like stealing to me. She took from you and didn’t ask and is making money out of you?

BlackCatsRule88 · 08/04/2020 12:03

That’s 100% not OK in any situation.

MehitabelWhurl · 08/04/2020 12:05

Cheeky bitch!! 😮😡

RollingDog · 08/04/2020 12:05

Wow that is serious CF shit.

Going forward is there a way that you can disable participants recording Zoom meetings that you host?

JackJackIncredible · 08/04/2020 12:07

Jeez, the cheek of this woman, you are definitely not BU.

CoronaIsComing · 08/04/2020 12:11

You haven't shared videos with looked after children in them have you?

The OP hasn’t shared anything! That’s not very fair to accuse her.

The foster carer is completely in the wrong here and I’d report her to the council or her agency. If the foster child does feature in the videos then she definitely needs reporting. Obviously, you should stop the tutoring immediately which is a big shame for the child.

TheVanguardSix · 08/04/2020 12:12

She's not allowed to use your image without your permission.
Have a read through this. We have publicity rights in the US. Here in the UK it's a bit more vague but there are ways around getting someone to stop unauthorized sharing of your image/video.

Chris5690 · 08/04/2020 12:13

Against gdpr to use your image in a video without a signed release form. You should get legal advice - possibly she is liable if you sue. Get in writing you do not give permission for her to use any recordings of you and she needs to delete any personal information she has on you.

eternalopt · 08/04/2020 12:14

It's copyright infringement. The lessons you are delivering are written by you and therefore you own the copyright in them and their delivery. Tell her that you have discovered this and her sister owes you an account of profits for the money she is making and she has to immediately cease and desist using your material.

inwood · 08/04/2020 12:14

I'm not sure of the legalities but she is absolutely taking the fucking piss.

I think unfortunately the onus may be on you to set the call to private, she can share it if not.

Zoom has some dodgy security practices that are coming to light now the whole world is using it.

manybirdsnests · 08/04/2020 12:15

WTAF?
No way! YADNBU!

I'd be having words with the foster carer - how dare she! And as for the CF sister - how dare she even more! Definitely threaten with solicitor. That is not ok.

Katjolo · 08/04/2020 12:15

Beyond cheeky.

PicaK · 08/04/2020 12:16

The money side of it is poor form.
Using her Foster child to make money is absolutely abhorrent. Report to social services now. What kind of care is that poor child getting?

PicaK · 08/04/2020 12:17

This isn't a zoom etiquette question this is a child protection issue
