How much milk?

Does a normal person get through in a week?

I know my consumption is unusually low. Until I discovered filtered milk, I would rarely get through a pint before it went off. Now a pint generally lasts me 7-10 days.

I am doing shopping for my parents at the moment. On Friday I got them, as asked, 4 pints of milk. Which I assumed would last a week (we'd agreed that I wouldn't go again until this coming weekend).

Today they rang to say they'd run out and would I go and get them 8 more pints! And also a prescription and medical things, so fine, it was an essential journey.

But 12 pints of milk for two people for a week seems, well, a LOT to me.

What's a normal amount for someone who isn't a child/teenager, who has tea and coffee and a bowl of cereal most days?

I'm the same as you op, need to buy the filtered milk otherwise I have to throw it. I only have it on cereal but I know tea drinkers who could get through an awful lot of milk.

OneHanded · 07/04/2020 23:41

My parents get through 12 a week. Morning porridge, tea, large mocha, white sauce etc.

MARMITEcheese2020 · 07/04/2020 23:47

My inlaws is just the 2 of them they chain drink tea. They go thro 4 pts every other day so times daily with guests.

We are a family of 4 plus a baby and a dsc here a fir bit and we buy 3x4pt when go shopping weekly. And sometime have to get another.
My teen drinks glasses full. Both kids have a bowl of cereal. We don't drink much tea.
Toddler still likes a bottle at bed.. Don't shoot me lol. And often asks for one in the day. ( everything else drinks from a normal cup. This is her comfort and has done since baby been born)

So us min 12pt total.

None

HavenDilemma · 07/04/2020 23:51

@ClientQueen 🤣 Thing is, it actually would be....

BackforGood · 07/04/2020 23:54

That's less than a pint a person, per day though, isn't it ?
Doesn't seem excessive to me.

If you start yhe day with cereal / porridge, that's a considerable portion gone - the cuppa during the day, and mily drink before bed could easily take you over a pint, before you consider it being used in custard / white or cheese sauces / batters etc.

ChickLitLover · 07/04/2020 23:56

Between the 4 of us, normally we get through at least 2 pints a day. We’re using more at the moment as everyone is home. Lots in tea and cereal. The kids are drinking loads of hot chocolate so 3 pints some days at the moment. 😬 We use some oat and almond milk, not just cows milk.

Randomschoolworker19 · 07/04/2020 23:58

I live by myself and the milk man delivers 6 x 1pint bottles a week.

I have cereal every morning, lots of cups of teas and like a glass of milk in the evening before bed though.

dellacucina · 08/04/2020 00:11

My 3 year old and I collectively get through minimum 10 pints per week. I've actually been rationing our milk consumption to minimise our trips out.

TAKESNOSHITSHIRLEY · 08/04/2020 18:45

are you ready for this?

we go through 24 pints a day, more if im having a bad day

i have severe GERD and even though im on medication acid still comes up,the the only thing that helps it is milk so i drink pints and pints of blue 4 pinters, this neutralises the acid in my throat and stomach so i need to keep up a regular top up

the 9 y old also loves milk and gets through about 8 pints him self

we have a extra fridge just for milk

MrsMonkeyBear · 08/04/2020 18:58

We go through 8 pints of whole milk (husband and 2 children) and I use around 2 cartons of Lactose Free.

awkwardbuttons · 08/04/2020 19:11

We have three milk drinkers in the house, one is a toddler. We get through 16 to 20 pints a week.

JellyfishandShells · 09/04/2020 15:50

There was something on the radio this morning about how there is a milk surplus atm because of all the hospitality outlets, especially coffee shops closing - we are obviously not replacing all the lattes with an equivalent amount at home.

bridgetreilly · 09/04/2020 18:12

@JellyfishandShells maybe, but I suspect that's more to do with supply chains. Getting the milk that would normally go into the catering industry on to supermarket shelves may not be that straightforward.

My husband is exactly like you, he drinks whole milk and I have to buy the filtered milk too otherwise it would go out of date! I on the other hand would happily drink my whole carton a day, although I drink skimmed milk which I think is easier to drink lots of it because there’s much less cream so it’s much less heavy! My DCs are really quite young so still go through a relatively high amount of milk! If we all drank the same milk I’d say we’d go through 4-6 pints every 3 days!

opticaldelusion · 09/04/2020 18:27

Maybe a pint or two a week for my son depending on how much cereal he eats. I don't drink milk, of any type, at all.

HeffalumpsCantDance · 09/04/2020 18:33

Two people in my house like hot chocolate, cocoa and Horlicks. One makes cheese sauce at least twice a week. We get through 3+ pints a day for 4 adults.

nokidshere · 09/04/2020 18:41

4 adults here and we barely get through 2L a week. And that's the odd bowl of cereal and coffee really.

JellyfishandShells · 09/04/2020 19:20

Indeed, you are right about format , but I was paraphrasing what the industry spokesman actually said re the coffee shops.

ElloElloVera · 09/04/2020 19:28

Family of 3.

During lockdown - 16 pints per week.

Before lockdown with DH working away in the week so 2 of us - 6-8 pints per week.

Sugarplumfairy65 · 09/04/2020 19:50

2 adults here. We get through 12 pints per week. More if I'm making yogurt.

itsstillgood · 09/04/2020 19:56

16-20pints a week. My 14yo is probably responsible for about 2/3 of that.

OrwenOrdduOrgoch · 09/04/2020 20:04

We drink 20 a week between 4 of us so that’s 5 pints a person. Don’t eat much cereal, if we ate cereal it’s be more.

Artinsurance · 09/04/2020 20:18

2 adults - we appear to be drinking 8-10 pints a week currently. Not quite sure how.

Desmondo2016 · 09/04/2020 20:26

Between 12 and 16 pints a weekm 2 adults 2kids
