How much milk?

Does a normal person get through in a week?

I know my consumption is unusually low. Until I discovered filtered milk, I would rarely get through a pint before it went off. Now a pint generally lasts me 7-10 days.

I am doing shopping for my parents at the moment. On Friday I got them, as asked, 4 pints of milk. Which I assumed would last a week (we'd agreed that I wouldn't go again until this coming weekend).

Today they rang to say they'd run out and would I go and get them 8 more pints! And also a prescription and medical things, so fine, it was an essential journey.

But 12 pints of milk for two people for a week seems, well, a LOT to me.

What's a normal amount for someone who isn't a child/teenager, who has tea and coffee and a bowl of cereal most days?

we dont have any dairy milk , but use rice milk for coffee and soya milk for the kids cereal etc im not actually sure what we go though .. if its not a limited product i don't really see the issue though ? other that if its against your ethics (im shielding but i couldnt buy meat/dairy/eggs for anyone as its against my ethics) then its not really anything to do with you , very nice of you to volunteer but if you are you should do it without judgement really .. obviously if you can only get so much from 1 shop then dont run around for it but why would you care how much they have? x

Milky fiends! That really made me laugh, thank you! My husband and son drink enormous amounts of milk.

JackiFazaki · 07/04/2020 19:59

Sixteen pints between 3 adults.

littlemixarerubbish · 07/04/2020 20:00

Adding it up, I think we're getting through around 20 pints a week at the moment, for me, DH and DC's 10 and 8. We're having 14 pints delivered and then are using two other big bottles as well. It's used in lots of cereal, making milkshakes, hot drinks, and for baking / making Yorkshire puds.
I'm trying to get the DC's to go a bit easier on their cereal but they are obviously eating far more at home than they before. I don't know what we go through in "normal" times as we just grab it from the corner shop when we been it.

DysonFury · 07/04/2020 20:01

Dd6 and I are milk monsters. We do at least 24 pints a week Blush. It does make up a huge part of our food intake though.

Whentheleavesfalldown · 07/04/2020 20:02

I loveeee milk. I drink around 8 pints a week of semi-skimmed, either with cereal or on it's own, mainly on it's own! DH has it in coffee, so normally go through 10 pints a week for both of us!

BrieAndChilli · 07/04/2020 20:04

At least 12 pints a week here for 2 adults and 3 kids age 9-13.
Kids have at least one bowl of cereal each in the mornings, and drink at least a glass of milk a day, they also like hot choc in the evenings, DH likes porridge. Lots of teas and coffees, and I use a lot in cooking eg cheese or white sauce for a meal, custard, a large splash in a sponge cake, etc etc

Duchessofblandings · 07/04/2020 20:06

Depends. Family of 5, we can easily get through 4 pints in a day with hot drinks, glasses of milk, maybe Yorkshire puds, lasagna etc.

Oysterbabe · 07/04/2020 20:06

2 adults and 2 kids. 4 pints lasts us about 5 days.

SanFrancisco49er · 07/04/2020 20:08

I'm worried about my calcium levels reading this thread as I dont like hot drinks, not keen on cereal and not keen on cheese. I therefore so rarely have milk, I had no idea how much everyone else seems to consume! Husband has it with coffee with maybe once a day, cereal maybe once a week. We maybe get a pint every 10 days or so but I forget a lot of the time.

AdoraBell · 07/04/2020 20:10

Me- none
Family - 1 litre

That’s DH and 2 teens. We do get through 4/6 large yoghurt pots though. This has reminded me that no one opened last week’s bottle, so I need to make a ton of pancakes tonight 🤦‍♀️

Brits are obsessed with milk😂 I mean it nicely not in a nasty way. Even my mum pointed it out when she saw people's Christmas shopping with oh so much milk.

We use it for coffee (mine), porridge and cornflakes. 4 pints do 2 of us for a week because we don't eat cornflakes and porridge every day. Each to their own. It's not harming anyone drinking more of it (or is it unhealthy if a lot?)

cowfacemonkey · 07/04/2020 20:12

Family of 4 about 18 pints a week.

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 07/04/2020 20:12

Do people really just go and drink a glass of milk or is it just on TV?

Thesearmsofmine · 07/04/2020 20:14

I use about 4pints a week on my own. As a family of 5 we go trough around 20 pints a week sometimes a bit more.

bmbonanza · 07/04/2020 20:15

4 of us use two 4 pint containers a day so logically 2 people =1 4 pint container per day.

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 07/04/2020 20:16

Omg I have only drank a glass of milk as an adult, when pregnant it soothed my terrible heart burn. It’s just used it coffee/ porridge otherwise in my house

JackiFazaki · 07/04/2020 20:16

Yes, we really do just go and drink a glass of milk.Grin

cowfacemonkey · 07/04/2020 20:16

I always have one glass of cold milk in the evening.

Redwinestillfine · 07/04/2020 20:21

The milkman brings us 10 pints a week for a family of four.... maybe they wanted extra to freeze for emergencies? Can they get a milkman? Much easier.

AliasGrape · 07/04/2020 20:21

In normal times we’d probably get through a pint in a week (just me and DH) - just a splash in my teas and his coffees, but even then most tea/coffee drinking took place at work so hardly used any in the week. Occasionally we’d get extra if cooking something with cheese/parsley sauce or one of us fancied cereal as a ‘treat’ at the weekend.

Since being pregnant however I’ve developed a bit of a thing for Ovaltine so between that and drinking our brews at home all day we’re probably getting through 4-6 pints a week now.

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 07/04/2020 20:21

😱 Weirdos 😂
I am joking of course. Thanks for answering!

I get it for the heartburn. It does make it better

DontStandSoCloseToMe · 07/04/2020 20:24

We generally get through 9-10 pints a week around 7 of those are DS though (16 months gets through just under a pint a day including cereal/porridge and the cups of milk he has before his nap and at bedtime), so 2-3 for me and DH, less when we're out working more, maybe an extra pint if he has an unpredictable cereal binge (if we've had something salady for dinner.....). It does seem a fair amount but if they drink 5/6 cups of tea a day each or more plus cereal or porridge every morning they'd get through at least a pint a day if not two

CoffeeBeansGalore · 07/04/2020 20:26

Approx 5 or 6 pints a day. 3 adults & 1 teen drink milky coffees, hot chocolate, tea. Dh, teen & adult daughter all eat cereal & porridge. Also use milk for sauces/baking etc.

actiongirl1978 · 07/04/2020 20:32

16-20 pints a week. DS10 main consumer, 3 bowls of cereal a day.

Now DH at home too we each have 3ish flat whites each day.
DH eating cereal now at home.
I drink tea in the afternoon and take it quite milky.

Thankfully farmshop/ocado have delivered us ample supplies so far so no need to shop around for rations.
