How much milk?

Does a normal person get through in a week?

I know my consumption is unusually low. Until I discovered filtered milk, I would rarely get through a pint before it went off. Now a pint generally lasts me 7-10 days.

I am doing shopping for my parents at the moment. On Friday I got them, as asked, 4 pints of milk. Which I assumed would last a week (we'd agreed that I wouldn't go again until this coming weekend).

Today they rang to say they'd run out and would I go and get them 8 more pints! And also a prescription and medical things, so fine, it was an essential journey.

But 12 pints of milk for two people for a week seems, well, a LOT to me.

What's a normal amount for someone who isn't a child/teenager, who has tea and coffee and a bowl of cereal most days?

Between me dh, and dd1 we can get through 20 - 24 pints a week. I like cereal and drink hot chocolate after i went off tea during my second pregnancy and I'm currently breastfeeding dd2 so need to keep my fluids up.

Tomorrowsanewday · 07/04/2020 20:33

I think it would be more convenient for me to have a cow in the back garden 😬.
2 adults and 1 15 year old milk guzzler.
We get through 26 pints a week but we all take cereal/porridge for breakfast and DS drinks milk with meals.

IncognitoIsMyFavouriteWord · 07/04/2020 20:34

My DS is a milk fiend. When he lived at home we had weeks where we got through 20 pints.

There was 2 of us.

He would drink it by the pint.

I don't see anything wrong with it. Unless there is a milk shortage.

I am on soya milk now so not something I would be aware of?

limebedding · 07/04/2020 20:34

4 bowls of cereal every morning.
8 cuppas a day.
Glasses of milk for the kids.
Some used in cooking - last week I used milk in Yorkshire pudding, cauliflower cheese, pancakes.
I sometimes add a splash to my mash or scrambled eggs if I'm low on butter.

Easily 10 pints a week in this house.

HavenDilemma · 07/04/2020 20:35

Christ I drink 4 pints per day and that's just me!!

limebedding · 07/04/2020 20:36

Have they considered signing up for milk delivery? Inclusion on a milk round? How do we say 'they should get a milkman' these days??

TreacherousPissFlap · 07/04/2020 20:38

3 of us, around 24 pints a week. I'd never really considered it before but that's quite a lot Confused

majesticallyawkward · 07/04/2020 20:41

This is interesting, I'm wanting to get milk delivered so have been keeping an eye on our consumption (riveting I know!) and between 2 adults and 1 child we get through about 12 pints a week minimum.

Dd4 has a bowl of cereal a day plus the occasional milk drink

I have 1-2 bowls of cereal or porridge a week, plus tea and coffee

Dh has a bowl of cereal a day (uses an unholy amount of milk) plus fairly milky teas- up to 10 a day now he's working from home!

Then there is milk used in cooking and baking on top, Yorkshire puds and pancakes are regulars.

I don't think that's an unusual amount.

Is there a milkman your parents could sign up with? Saves you extra trips.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 07/04/2020 20:43

About eight pints a week for two adults, more just now as both at home all day drinking endless cups of tea.

zukiecat · 07/04/2020 20:44

Only DD and me here and only DD has milk in a bowl of cereal or in her tea, so maybe two pints per week.

I hate milk, and all things dairy, so I could live the rest of my life without buying another drop of milk.

Is milk not being rationed in the shops just now?

stophuggingme · 07/04/2020 20:48

My three children get through about 14 litres of milk a week
cereal
Porridge
Hot chocolate
Warm milk and cold milk
Milkshakes

Plus I make homemade custard, Yorkshire puddings, and a rice pudding for them once a week

I can’t stand it and only have skimmed milk in tea but feel as though I am forever buying green and blue milk

TheGreatWave · 07/04/2020 20:53

Probably about 35 pints a week.

2 adults, 3 children. DS lives on a diet mainly consisting of cereal, so uses a lot. (asd)

Hah. My dad used to be a dairy farmer, so milk was always free, fresh and very plentiful. However, it does mean that they don't live on anyone's milk round!

I don't mind getting them as much milk as they need. I was just surprised by how much that seems to be, but it seems like they are far from unusual in that.

I use lots. Porridge, in tea & coffee, in baking, sauces, batters. Prob 3 pints a week for me. The DC a pint a day each.

EmpressSuiko · 07/04/2020 21:09

Family of four here, we easily get through 16 pints a week.

DH could only buy 12 pints this week so will have to be careful with our consumption to make sure it lasts us the whole week!

JorisBonson · 07/04/2020 21:10

We go through gallons of the stuff and it's just me and DP, especially at the moment. The man drinks a ridiculous amount of coffee and I eat all the cereal in the south east of England.

AJPTaylor · 07/04/2020 21:29

When all 3 dc were at home I used to order 6x6pints in my weekly shop. Yes. They got through 36 pints a week.
Dc1 has moved home for the duration we now do 4 pints a day.

Chiyo666 · 07/04/2020 21:32

We don’t really drink it so it’s just something I buy occasionally as a treat to have with cookies. So maybe a pint once a month?

isittheholidaysyet · 07/04/2020 21:40

Probably about a pint a day each for the adults. I drink endless tea/coffee and DH likes a glass of milk at bedtime.
I've drastically reduced my milk intake, for weight loss reasons, used to have cereal morning and evening, dropped that and gone onto skimmed.

Kids on the other hand (Teens and pre-teens):
Half a pint on cereal morning and evening,
Lots of glasses to drink.
Warm milk at bedtime.
Milkshake (I try to forget to buy the powder!)

Plus we may make: cheese sauce, Yorkshire puds, pancakes, rice pud etc.

Drink lots

MrsPnut · 07/04/2020 22:03

We get through 4-6 pints a day, if there is milk in the house our teenager will drink it.

We’re having to pop into the village shop every day to top up on the way back from walking the dogs in the morning.

WotnoPasta · 07/04/2020 22:26

3 of us. About 16-20 pints a week. When I do go to the shop I take a backpack and put 2 giant cartons in to carry home. Thankfully it’s quite close.

ClientQueen · 07/04/2020 22:34

A fair bit! I drink a LOT of tea

At work (big building) we have 32 pints a day delivered and it's all used. My manager mused a cow might be more cost efficient

Iloveplacentas · 07/04/2020 22:56

We are a family of 6 and get through about 18 pints. I don’t even drink it, I use oat milk. I have no idea where it all goes

Fifthtimelucky · 07/04/2020 23:11

For the two of us it's normally about 3 pints a week, or 4 if I'm making something like a cheese sauce, Yorkshire pudding or custard.

Most of it goes in my husband's cereal. We don't use any in tea (neither of us drink it) or coffee (I don't drink it and he has it black).

I very rarely use more than 4 pints a week and, if I do, it's usually because I'm doing a lot of cooking and/or the use/by date is approaching and I decide to use it up in something like a rice pudding.
