AIBU to think if you're healthy you should give up your delivery slots

Just thinking it's not really fair if you're healthy, and have a car, to use delivery slots from the supermarket. If you're healthy I think you should just go to the shop… It was different when we were all working and had no time etc etc, but most of us are wfh now and no reason we cant do a trip to the supermarket. Would help sick people and key workers etc by freeing up delivery spots.

If everyone stopped doing it and only vulnerable people did, then that is a gaurantee that vulnerable people will get it.
Everyone uses the same excuse there is not guarantee a vulnerable person will get it so why shouldn't I.

CandyStripeCushion · 06/04/2020 12:14

YABVVU. It starts with the delivery slots, eventually you are deciding who is most entitled to food. Be careful what you wish for.

Runningjayne · 06/04/2020 12:14

I'm not giving up my slot. My husband and dd have asthma, not bad enough to be on a government list but bad enough to have me worried sick. Healthy people are dying to and I'm not going to risk losing a child or my children losing a parent

vanillandhoney · 06/04/2020 12:15

If everyone stopped doing it and only vulnerable people did, then that is a gaurantee that vulnerable people will get it.

But it's not only the vulnerable who need delivery slots. Plenty of other people rely on online delivery, especially if they live in rural areas, don't drive and can no longer rely on lifts from friends or taxis or public transport.

flumposie · 06/04/2020 12:15

Forgot to add that up until about 4 weeks ago I would get up on a Sunday morning and book a slot for the next day.

myself2020 · 06/04/2020 12:15

around here Its generally not that hard to get the slots (as long as you are not precious about when they are). so no, i‘m not giving mine up because others can’t be asked to book early (you need to book about 1 week in advance, so not outrageous), or want to book in the afternoon (the last slots tend to go around 6:30 in the morning after being release at midnight , so not an impossible time to be up).
if the situation would be worse, i would, but as it is, no way (hardly anybody works 12 to 6:30am every single day AND is the only adult in the household)

FreakStar · 06/04/2020 12:16

Every man and his dog thinks they are vulnerable and deserve priority delivery slots.

If every healthy person was to go to the supermarket it would mean more people out and about spreading it round.

There's no way of knowing how many 'vulnerable' people would be able to get deliveries if everybody else went to the shop. It could end up with supermarkets delivering at below their capacity and too many people in the shops.

The supermarkets are selecting vulnerable people for priority so don't see what else they can do. Everyone has a reason they need a delivery right now and as many people as possible should be shopping online.

Oh don't be ridiculous candy's tripe.

Thank you @VashtaNerada it’s really considerate of you! Of course there’s no obligation to, but the feeling of not being able to get a shop in (I’m struggling enough carrying them from the doorstop at the moment!) is scary.

The disabled are being greatly overlooked in this situation. We’re not highly vulnerable but I can’t steer a trolley/a car/hold a basket and still put things in it and have weakened immune system from years of anorexia and asthma.

1981m · 06/04/2020 12:18

I disagree. I don't feel safe going to the supermarket and I am trying to follow advice by going out shopping as little as possible. I feel I am at risk every time I go out so if I can get a supermarket delivery or click and collect shop I will. I am helping reduce the number of people going out to shops.

Changednamesorry · 06/04/2020 12:19

Spain now has this in several supermarkets implemented by the supermarket themselves. They ONLY deliver to the vulnerable.

Carbosug · 06/04/2020 12:20

No you're not 1981m

RuffleCrow · 06/04/2020 12:20

There aren't any delivery slots to give up! Car or no fucking car.

frillyfarmer · 06/04/2020 12:21

I'm fit and healthy, with a newborn baby and a husband who is a key worker. Not a chance in hell I am surrendering my online slots and risking my baby's health when there is no guarantee that a more worthy person will get my slots.

RhymingRabbit3 · 06/04/2020 12:23

I'm "healthy" but on the vulnerable (flu jab) list but not the shield list. My DH doesn't have any underlying conditions. However we are using my slot to buy for both sets of parents and also my husbands grandparents, so although the slot isnt technically for a vulnerable person we are passing on our luck.

1981m · 06/04/2020 12:26

Yes frilly, we neither. I have managed to get one delivery slot and two click and collects. We have a click and collect booked for this week and I will try and get another next week.

I would not try and take a slot for the elderly and vulnerable but I think once they have been prioritised the rest are a free for all for who can get them. Sainsbury's and Waitrose are only doing delivery and click and collect to those who need it so options for others are limited anyway. It's not like they are taking all the slots. I won't be giving up my slots but do always ask less able neighbours if they need me to add anything for them.

SoupDragon · 06/04/2020 12:27

Yeah it's just people really - some selfish, some not

The flip side is that some are virtue signallers, loudly and proudly announcing that they have given up their slots and saying that everyone who doesn't is selfish and some who just quietly get on with it.

SoupDragon · 06/04/2020 12:27

(Not aimed at anyone in particular!)

Sexnotgender · 06/04/2020 12:30

Stop trying to tell people what to fucking do.

I have several slots booked over the next few weeks. My daughter is being shielded and I’m fucked if I’m risking her health because some busybody thinks that I as a healthy person should give up my slots.

1981m · 06/04/2020 12:30

I don't think it is selfish. I am following government advice, going out as little as possible. I am one less person going to the shops who could potentially infect others or get infected themselves. That's the aim of the lockdown.

Blibbyblobby · 06/04/2020 12:33

What should be happening (and hopefully is) is supermarkets massively increasing their ordering and delivery capability so that many more people can get deliveries rather than go to supermarkets in person. That's much better than an either/or situation.

namechangenumber2 · 06/04/2020 12:33

We've got a delivery coming this evening, that I booked 3 weeks ago. We're not vulnerable but half of the household are asthmatics so we're avoiding contact with anyone as much as possible. So we've scrapped through until now, and now we're desperate!

I know someone who is somehow managing to get multiple slots ( delivery and C&C) a week. I don't know her well enough to know if she's vulnerable, but if she isn't then I think that's pretty selfish.

TiredSloth · 06/04/2020 12:34

I have a dd who is in the extremely vulnerable group and we have had a letter from the Welsh government telling us all not to go out. I don’t know where people are getting the idea that we are getting priority slots from but I can’t get a Tesco delivery slot for love nor money! So yes I am frustrated that there might be a healthy family out there with a slot that could be ours. Running out of food and don’t know what to do.
