AIBU to think if you're healthy you should give up your delivery slots

Just thinking it's not really fair if you're healthy, and have a car, to use delivery slots from the supermarket. If you're healthy I think you should just go to the shop… It was different when we were all working and had no time etc etc, but most of us are wfh now and no reason we cant do a trip to the supermarket. Would help sick people and key workers etc by freeing up delivery spots.

I am gobsmacked at some of the self centred posts on here. Thankfully they're very much in the minority.

alloutoffucks · 06/04/2020 12:59

The most vulnerable get a letter from the NHS that tells them to register on yougov and asks for permission to share their details. These are not people who find it difficult to get to the shops, but people who will probably die if they get corona.
Some of this group have been given priority by supermarkets, others like me still have not heard anything. I suspect because there are half a million of us that this is taking some time to do.
I know having a delivery slot makes life easier for a lot of people. But that is different from trying to make sure you won't die and leave your kids without a mum.
I have no issue at all in normal times walking to the shop. I am perfectly mobile and can walk a few miles to a shop and carry food back if I had to. I am in the most vulnerable group to try and stop myself dying in the next few months.

Ladyglitterfairydust · 06/04/2020 13:01

I always used to get my shopping delivered, but I’m not at the moment because it’s too hard to get a slot and too many items are unavailable. I’d rather go to the shops to see what’s available. I’m in the fortunate position that this is easy for me to do.

madcatladyforever · 06/04/2020 13:01

I've filled in numerous vulnerable people online forms for people in my own time and they still don't have shopping slots weeks later.
God I'm so sick of people who say I booked weeks ago and I'm ok etc etc. I don't care there are people who need them more than you. Sick people who don't have any food left.

alloutoffucks · 06/04/2020 13:01

Not half a million of us, one and a half million in the most vulnerable group, sorry.

MyDcAreMarvel · 06/04/2020 13:01

You might be a carer for people on the government list and because they are under 18, not be able to get a slot.
Thankfully it doesn’t work like that, you register with the government on behalf of your under 18 using their details. The email address you use will be sent to the supermarkets.

MyDcAreMarvel · 06/04/2020 13:02

@ madcatladyforever have you made sure the email address you used on the government website are registered with the supermarkets?

Carbosug · 06/04/2020 13:03

Oh and sorry if we're boring you pinkspring

TriangleBingoBongo · 06/04/2020 13:05

Good idea in theory.

I am fit and healthy. But do have an underlying health condition, a DH who is a key worker working long hours and a 1 year old.
I am also doing my neighbours shopping which adds a burden.
When DH is home he has DSS who has SEN and he can’t be left whilst DH shops (I can’t manage the two kids its not safe for any of us).

So yes, ideally. But there’s many other factors that come into play.

Leflic · 06/04/2020 13:05

Surely everyone should be using delivery slots, where ever possible?

I realise some people can’t leave home and some haven’t got means to leave home and yes they should absolutely be a priority. But if the supermarkets have no system in place it makes it null and void.
Who wins the slot - the 65 year with health issues but with a car, the single mum no car in countryside or a key worker in a hospital ?

Sparrowlegs248 · 06/04/2020 13:05

I'm healthy (ish, I do get the flu jab fur a heart condition). I'm a key worker, but working from hone and have 2 small children, and am a single parent. I can get Sainsbury deliveries as they are currently keeping slots for old/vulnerable then releasing others to delivery pass customers, which I am.

I'm doing 1 shop every 10 days or so. I'll keep my slots.

Carbosug · 06/04/2020 13:07

The point @Leflic is that in many many places it is virtually impossible to get a slot.

alloutoffucks · 06/04/2020 13:12

@mydcaremarvel I have used the same email address, nothing.

katienana · 06/04/2020 13:12

I had a slot this morning which I got about 3 weeks ago. I have a delivery pass and usually average 6 deliveries a month. I won't bother looking for another slot now because we have enough food for the next 2 weeks at least and we can go out to buy anything we need.
To be honest I dont mind going out as it's a change of scene

JanewaysBun · 06/04/2020 13:13

I've been not looking for them as my family are healthy/have a car/not keyworkers

alloutoffucks · 06/04/2020 13:14

@leflic Maybe those in the shielded group who will probably die if they get corona? That is why we are advised not to leave our house at all. Still can't get a slot.

JanewaysBun · 06/04/2020 13:14

However I must admit seeing as going to the supermarket is my only toddler/baby free activity all week I actively look forward to it and love the "me" time Grin

SusieOwl4 · 06/04/2020 13:21

We are shielding but not in the highest vunerable group - so after my next delivery we wont get a choice - just cant get slots

I really do NOT want to go to a supermarket and possibly bring something back to MOH who is in the vunerable group

But it looks like that is what I will have to do.

zonkin · 06/04/2020 13:21

You can't win on Mumsnet. Either you shouldn't be going at all and you're being a selfish twat if you do go out, or in fact you should be going out to let others have your delivery slot. If you don't give up your delivery slot you are a selfish twat.

Why is this even in AIBU? There is a dedicated Coronavirus topic for all the morally better than everyone else brigade.

WhatWouldYouDoWhatWouldJesusDo · 06/04/2020 13:22

My friend and her husband are both having to isolate as they're on the extremely vulnerable list.

She doesn't drive, and as the healthier of the two is spending a fortune in the co op and putting herself at risk. If those who don't need the delivery slots would give them up and venture into a shop it would help massively.

PinkSpring · 06/04/2020 13:25

People need to remember that's it's also dependant on area - just because some people are finding it hard to book a slot, doesn't mean that everyone is. Some stores are bigger than others, some have more drivers/vans, some are in more rural locations so not as many customers - there are loads of factors.

In my area, it's fairly easy to get a slot once a week, if you go on at midnight when the slots are released because I live in a rural location and with a high population of elderly who don't and WON'T shop online. Yet I am called entitled by people on here for booking slots....

It's a shame for the people who can't get slots but it's not on calling people entitled

lydia7986 · 06/04/2020 13:25

What about if you’re reasonably healthy, and not old enough to be considered officially vulnerable, but sufficiently old that there’s no way you’ll get a ventilator if you need one?

Carbosug · 06/04/2020 13:25

Where is any saying it's a stark choice between the two Zonkin

1981m · 06/04/2020 13:26

Interesting, my mum has very recently managed to get on the Sainsbury's list of the vulnerable. Think she filled an online list.

There are lots of slots for key people who have priority, as they should, then the rest of us scramble for the left over ones. When I go on there are days and days of blocked out slots that I can't access. Waitrose and Sainsbury's won't even let me shop online with them. As it should be. I am not stopping anyone with a greater need than me getting a slot as those people are priority. I am getting one of the slots available for anyone else which are few and far between.

Gwenhwyfar · 06/04/2020 13:27

"People on the vulnerable list are already prioritised so the remaining slots are for everyone else"

Well, no, they're for the next people down, people who are vulnerable but not on the list e.g. old people, next comes those who find it hard to get to the shops I suppose. I'm healthy so can go to the supermarket myself.
Not having a car is not a problem either, but I obviously have to go many times a week so when I hear people saying you should only go once a week...
