AIBU to think if you're healthy you should give up your delivery slots

Just thinking it's not really fair if you're healthy, and have a car, to use delivery slots from the supermarket. If you're healthy I think you should just go to the shop… It was different when we were all working and had no time etc etc, but most of us are wfh now and no reason we cant do a trip to the supermarket. Would help sick people and key workers etc by freeing up delivery spots.

YABU! I'm healthy and have a car. I am frontline nhs staff. My dad has COPD and over 70, my mum is currently in hospital and will be for weeks, likely months (not covid 19) so I also need to get supplies to my dad. I have young children and my partner is in a vulnerable group. So if you look at the wider picture, me using supermarket delivery slots is protecting alot of people.... Its not just about me. Also, as you can imagine, my job is mentally, emotionally and physically demanding and draining at the moment. We are all working overtime to cover staff shortages. The last thing I want to do on my limited time off is wait to enter a supermarket and do the shopping. Im already stressed about taking the virus home from work to my family, I'm not going to put extra pressure on myself worrying about picking it up in a supermarket.

Sandybval · 10/04/2020 21:05

@BelfryBat if you were in the shield group for a bit though it's understandable to have a delivery if you can get one. Please don't put yourself at increased risk, especially seen as though there's a load of selfish people on this thread who are low risk and take them anyway.

Sandybval · 10/04/2020 21:07

I think NHS including carers etc should have priority to slots along with vulnerable.

BelfryBat · 10/04/2020 21:10

@Sandybval My doctor says that basically they've changed the criteria, I suspect they now have a clearer idea of who is most at risk and I'm not one of those people. I was getting loads of mixed messages because of this so I got a telephone consultation to clarify, having spent three weeks trying to work out what to do. Very glad that I'm not advised to stay in although in fact I am barely going out: a couple of times a week at most.

Rhayader · 10/04/2020 21:35

I guess there’s a scale of need for delivery slots which depends on a very long list of factors....

Are there people who need slots more than I do who haven’t been able to get them? Probably. But there are lots of people who need them less than I do and I do feel like I need them so I won’t be cancelling my slots.

1981m · 11/04/2020 09:26

To my amazement I managed to get a delivery from Asda for next week. Thought I wasn't going to get anything as all booked for weeks. Had actually stopped looking at delivery and just looking at click and collect. Click and collect all booked and randomly went on to delivery and they had two slots for next sat. Couldn't believe it! This was at 10,45pm so keep checking regularly as they do come up. I find evenings best.

I don't think I am taking it from someone more in need than me as it's not a slot specifically allocated for the vulnerable, it's a slot left for anyone else, with probably people exactly like me trying to get one.

I will be asking my neighbours if they want anything added though.

uncle1tupelo · 12/04/2020 10:17

With Tesco I'm finding I have to book as far in front as it allows...May 2 currently...my 80yr old father stays with us and while I am physically fit the last thing I want to do is bring back the virus to him.

With Tesco I'm having to set the alarm for through the night in order to get slots as they become available.

Anyone got any other tips?

Stefoscope · 12/04/2020 10:47

@uncle1tupelo. Morrisons have started offering deliveries via deliveroo and have just expanded their range of food boxes: www.morrisons.com/food-boxes/boxes . I know quite a few people who have been struggling to get a delivery with the bigger supermarkets but have managed to get one with them. I think M&S are doing something similar.

For meat, my housemate used to order from musclefoods.com and rated the quality.

Good luck, hope you manage to get sorted!

Xenia · 12/04/2020 11:11

We had another look at all on line delivery slots yesterday and decided it was impossible to order (even meat direct from farms!) so will have to keep queueing once a week until this is over.

Xenia · 12/04/2020 11:11

...even click and collect was offering nothing locally. I did not check Morrisons. My son checked M&S - no luck (they have a food place near us as do all major supermarkets)

alloutoffucks · 12/04/2020 12:34

@xenia You earn a very large salary. Can't you just order home delivery from a deli?

Xenia · 12/04/2020 12:49

I'm not that rich. The first week of lockdown I earned £40 on each of two days which okay is better than those on universal credit but is not mega bucks.

I never order home delivery of anything (although we did when we had 5 small children at home use Tesco deliveries for years just after they came out) - it seems a waste of money. I would never order something like a take away for example.

alloutoffucks · 12/04/2020 13:00

@xenia I thought you normally earned £200k plus?

ChipotleBlessing · 12/04/2020 13:06

@Xenia. We’re not fucking goldfish. We remember the years of boasting about your earnings and your island and telling women off if for some reason they weren’t earning £200k a year.

daisychain01 · 12/04/2020 13:18

The world has gone mad, and I really miss the old one.

Oh, me too! In fact I mourn the old MN, where people were mainly supportive and good humoured. Now it's just one almighty great big seething cauldron of hate and resentment.

People must be gluttons for punishment even admitting to getting a delivery slot on here. Keep your head below the parapet and avoid being vilified. Nobody deserves to be picked on by nasty bullies on here and there is definitely no one who has the facts to judge whether Person A is more deserving than Person B.

Xenia · 12/04/2020 14:04

I am not given to boasting. I certainly think women should know others can earn a lot as it helps them realise the possibilities out there and of course I have never told a woman off because of what she earns.

Stefoscope · 12/04/2020 14:57

@daisychain01 couldn't agree more. There's actually a thread on AIBU where people are bashing a widow with 6 children for struggling to shop for her family because of the 80 item limit. So much unecessary hate.

alloutoffucks · 12/04/2020 15:01

@xenia No one is telling you off. I just don't understand why you would be spending the hours I am trying to get delivery slots when you can afford to simply order from a deli. There are places where I live doing home delivery, only 2-3 days delivery time for anyone to book a delivery, I just can't afford it. You can. It seems a total waste of your time and energy.

WhereYouLeftIt · 12/04/2020 15:05

... some friends are really pissing me off, determined to get their delivery slots when they are well able to go to the supermarket.

Question for you @Sarah510. Have you told your friends that you think they're selfish? And if so, what was their reaction?

Ocarinan · 12/04/2020 16:16

I am not given to boasting.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Good one @xenia. I could really use a laugh right now.

MyHipsDontLieUnfortunately · 12/04/2020 16:25

I've been managing to get slots every 10 days or so. I said to the delivery driver last week that I'm fine with giving them up for someone on the shielded list but I'm not just releasing them for someone else to get hold of: if the slots are available to me they're available to anyone. I'm shopping for DF with COPD and PILs who are over 70. It's not up to me to sort the logistics of allocating slots to the vulnerable. I'm surprised it's proving so challenging to do.

EmeraldShamrock · 13/04/2020 10:06

Xenia. We’re not fucking goldfish 👌🤣

Xenia · 13/04/2020 10:15

I haven't spent hours trying to get slots. I spent about 2 minutes and my son similarly on a few occasions after which we gave up and had to go to the shop once a week. We live in outer London so we don't have the kind of posh food places that deliver and things like delis I suppose which people might have further in and I don't eat processed foods etc so I suppose we will just have to cope with going to the shop.

I think it is the trade off between inner or posher London and being out here in suburbs - we 9those of us lucky to live in a house not a flat) get a garden out here but not most of the shops people take for granted in the middle of cities I suppose.

Anyway I want to lose a stone so any shortage of food could be manna from heaven perhaps........ It is very hard times for many others of course and about 8 of the 10 houses around me have 80 year olds in them and my neighbour other than for emergency hospital has not left the house since the early 90s. Actually she is unaffected as her life is the same.

it is a difficult issue as we were told not to stockpile so when this started I had about a day's food in, then we were told not to buy much when we went to the shop yet not to go to the shop much which is quite a hard circle to square. I suppose we need to proceed on the basis those of us who are not physically vulnerable or sick or old should go to the shops to allow on line deliveries for others although those with small children probably should have priority at home too. If I were a supermarket I would be hiring as many of the 1m universal credit new claimants to ramp up deliveries massively.

My oldest son by the way is a supermarket grocery delivery driver (full time PAYE) and he says it is very busy, but fairly safe as they take good precautions of staff at his company and the roads whether in town or country are so much easier to drive over as no one is out and about.

So, if someone has a delivery slot (which l don’t by the way) and give it up, how are they supposed to ensure that it goes to somebody in greater need? It’s not like donating food to a food bank!

Finally never assume that everybody you see getting deliveries who looks healthy is actually that. Not all disabilities are visible.
