Are German nipples the worst?

Crackerofdoom · 03/04/2020 15:34

I just learned the word for nipples in German is Brustwarzen

The literal translation is "breast warts"

Is this the worst direct translation or are there more out there?

It's Nacktschnecke, because it is naked without a house.
I looked it up in the Duden.

PenOrPencil · 06/04/2020 17:05

It definitely is Nacktschnecke, cause it’s a naked snail!

NotMiranda · 06/04/2020 17:23

The Romanian word for Darling is Scumpo. Which doesn't sound especially affectionate to me!

thereisfreedomwithin · 06/04/2020 18:02

:)

cologne4711 · 06/04/2020 18:13

I like the idea of a Nachtschnecke too though. Perhaps there's room for both :)

@Igneococcus

As DH writes his own books, he can write the way he likes.
I on the other hand work in admin and have to adhere.

Zeichensetzung kann Leben retten (= punctuation can save lives):

Komm wir essen, Opa!
vs.
Komm, wir essen Opa!

Havanananana · 06/04/2020 18:30

Time for some German sesquipedalianism (a word which can also be used to describe an affliction suffered by certain hospitalised Prime Minister):

PickleSarnie - ich entschuldige mich- I just checked my dictionary ( he is sitting on the Couch watching the News) and you are absolutely correct-

DGRossetti · 06/04/2020 18:57

punctuation can save lives

eats shoots and leaves ...

DGRosetti
Thank you, I'll use that on DS.

IllegalFred · 06/04/2020 20:39

I've never been able to establish whether there's actually a word for slug in Danish. Whenever I talk about slugs, my MIL doesn't understand until I explain a snail without a house

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 06/04/2020 20:41

What is the English for when you bake a cake and it goes wrong and there is this soggy wettish looking part in the middle of the slice?
I mean the 'Kletschstreifen'

Thank you, found a second hand copy at Medipos and ordered it right away.

Isn't there a single Finnish word for " sitting at home in my underpants getting drunk" ? Sounds like fun-

Kalsarikännit. And now, with lockdown, there's kalsarityötä - sitting at home in your pants, working

There's no direct translation of that one in English, I don't think, but we do have the expression 'soggy bottom' to describe a tart or flan whose pastry base has either leaked filling or hasn't properly cooked through - so, kind of similar. Smile

Havanananana · 06/04/2020 21:51

@IllegalFred

A slug in Danish are just another snail, snegl, but to distinguish them from the ones with shells ('houses' in Danish) they are known by their individual types:
rød skovsnegle ( Arion rufus) are red, sort skovsnegle ( Arion ater ) are the black ones and dræbersnegle - 'killer snails' - (Arion lusitanicus) are the horrible ones that eat everything in sight in a garden, including other dræbersnegle. Velbekomme!

A man who does this is an 'Onslow-type' in Danish - after the character in Keeping Up Appearances.

Peregrina · 06/04/2020 21:58

Is this snegl pronounced snail?

IgiveupallthenamesIwantedareg0 · 06/04/2020 22:05

Thank you, Natsku!
Mary Berry is famous for her soggy bottom, but I would prefer to Kalsarikännit.

Havanananana · 06/04/2020 22:08

Is this snegl pronounced snail?

It is pronounced to approximately rhyme with the English word 'Smile'

Peregrina · 06/04/2020 22:12

A snile then. A snail could be pronounced like that in Kent or parts of London.
