Is it anti-social to smoke in your garden?

Just that really, abiu to smoke cigarettes in my garden?

When I do, I notice my neighbour shut his window. It makes me feel awkward about doing it as I dont want to annoy him, but just wondered if other people even think about it annoying their neighbours? Or am i over thinking it?

@voiceofsanitary

Smokers in the UK are statistically more likely to be of lower intelligence and lower conscientiousness than average.

Care to provide a link to where you saw/heard this 'fact?'

I don't smoke by the way, but find that an outrageous and massively insulting generalisation.

In fact, all of your posts are disturbing and weird frankly!

I agree with @TheArchSorcererofContwaraburg

Oh, I understood your point, voice, and find it so hysterical and irrational it's rather disturbing. Am heartily glad people like you are not in charge of triaging healthcare in this or any other country, you'd be there with a morality quiz as to who gets treated whilst at the same time equating them to murderers but not yourself due to your own sense of moral superiority. Chilling.

This. 100% ^

BeetrootRocks · 02/04/2020 21:52

Smoking is legal in the UK.

Take it up with your MP.

TheArchSorcererofContwaraburg · 02/04/2020 21:52

Now, Mummy, you haven't heard her full list! Drinkers, fat people, smokers, shoppers ('Ma'm, I need to see your bank and credit card statements to see if you're participated in any shopping I think is non-essential before you can be ventilated), any behaviour that she finds questionable, no soup vent for you! Because you're a murderer. Yep, right up there with Ian Brady and Peter Sutcliffe.

voiceofsanitary · 02/04/2020 21:52

Ok cool! That's fine, just so everyone knows @voiceofsanitary has given us all permission to be drunk and disorderly in our gardens and burden the NHS

I said the pretty much opposite of this.

Mummy102 · 02/04/2020 21:53

@voiceofsanitary - I'm not sure when anyone shamed anyone for living under coronavirus conditions? Smoking is bad, but so are a lot of other things. And I'm not seeing the same level of judgement from you.

BeetrootRocks · 02/04/2020 21:53

I'm still interested in what is meant by lower conscientiousness.

Given the standard common usage of the word.

I've had plenty of very conscientious co-workers who smoked. I'm not seeing the link. They weren't thick either tbh.

voiceofsanitary · 02/04/2020 21:54

I've posted the lower conscientiousness study - trying to find the intelligence link again (I read it ages ago).
Curiously it's the opposite in the USA for intelligence.

voiceofsanitary · 02/04/2020 21:56

Here's a Swedish one though www.gwern.net/docs/iq/2010-wennerstad.pdf

vodkaredbullgirl · 02/04/2020 21:57

This reminds me of a song by Adam Ant "Goody Two Shoes"

TrainspottingWelsh · 02/04/2020 21:57

Not rtfd but it depends on what you're smoking. Crack pipe, possibly a bit inconsiderate. Cigarettes, crack on.

We all have to do our bit for the nhs, and those of us smoking legal substances are making a huge contribution through tobacco taxation, while statistically not living long enough to become a burden to the nhs.

voiceofsanitary · 02/04/2020 21:57

Smoking is bad, but so are a lot of other things And I'm not seeing the same level of judgement from you.

This thread is about smoking - that's probably why! I explained why I'm less judgemental of drinking - passive drinking isn't a thing....

DrSheldonCooperPHD · 02/04/2020 21:58

Yep

EmeraldShamrock · 02/04/2020 22:00

The way I see it is, whether I smoke or not, it wouldn't stop me from caring for you if you suddenly stopped being able to live the life you do, if another illness (yes they do still exist, not just coronavirus) took over your life and you was unable to go to the toilet, it would not stop me from cleaning you up and making you feel comfortable. Etc. So why would you judge someone so hard purely based on the fact they smoke 😢 That was lovely OP.
Ignore the criticism on the thread. You asked a question, accepted the answer with grace out of concern for your neighbour, decided to move further down the garden.
@voiceofsanitary I get you hate smoking, I noticed your class and lack of intelligence comments threw in too when describing smoker's. I bet you have a "Be Kind" sticker in your car you're so nice. 🤔

voiceofsanitary · 02/04/2020 22:01

Oh, I understood your point, voice, and find it so hysterical and irrational it's rather disturbing.

78000 people per year die from smoking related illnesses.
Would you say I'm 'hysterical' in comparison than the reaction to covid-19? Currently just under 3000?

Why?

corythatwas · 02/04/2020 22:03

I wouldn't hate you, OP, but I'd have to shut the window because smoke triggers my allergy. Lots of other things are no doubt morally worse, but smoking is the one that makes me ill. It's got nothing to do with me being judgey.

EugenesAxe · 02/04/2020 22:04

Wow I’m amazed YABU is so high... it’s your private space and it’s outside. As long as you aren’t chain smoking, go for it I say.

There are a lot of scenarios where smoking in your own home I suppose might necessitate some consideration of your neighbours, but I couldn’t get worked up about a neighbour having the odd cig in the open air.

I don’t smoke BTW.

TheArchSorcererofContwaraburg · 02/04/2020 22:06

Because you're assuming your own moral superiority should be a barometer by which medical treatment should be meted out, voice, and likening people who participate in legal activities to murderers, FGS, that's off the bloody charts.

FunkyKingston · 02/04/2020 22:07

BBQ smell is different to cigarette smoke.

As a lifelong vegetarian (and non-smoker) I find the smell of burning animal flesh drifting over a garden wall far more offensive than cigarette smoke, but other people can do what they like in their own back garden.

oncemorewithfeeling99 · 02/04/2020 22:09

Depends. One old neighbour would smoke at his back door which blew smoke into our house. Our kids are asthmatic so not good for them.
Our current one smokes at the end of their garden (she has kids so presumably for their sake too). That isn’t unreasonable and doesn’t bother me, although we still get a waft occasionally.

voiceofsanitary · 02/04/2020 22:09

You really haven't understood my point....

Smoking is much worse than covid - deaths wise. My point (as I've stated before) is - why aren't we calling smokers out for killing our nans in the same way we are about covid?

TheArchSorcererofContwaraburg · 02/04/2020 22:11

On MN, Funk, BBQs are strictly verboten - unless you clear it with all the houses within a considered radius a week in advance and then double check. Someone might have washing out, you know.

voiceofsanitary · 02/04/2020 22:11

Here's and Israeli study on smoking and IQ, for those who asked - I'm honing in in the UK one

www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19919595

heartsonacake · 02/04/2020 22:12

YABU. Nobody wants to smell cigarette smoke as it is, but even more so when they’re on lockdown. It’s unacceptable to force others to breathe in harmful substances.

Perhaps you should be using this time to get rid of your addiction.

TheArchSorcererofContwaraburg · 02/04/2020 22:14

You really haven't understood my point....

It's a mark of intelligence to have the capability of realising that others may indeed understand your, erm, point and find it not only disagreeable but also reprehensible and lacking in critical thinking and intelligence. This does not mean they have not understood your point.

I mean, smokers are killing nans, someone call the magistrate! Murder in the first degree all the way Hmm.

Fucking hell.

vodkaredbullgirl · 02/04/2020 22:14

All us smokers can also google too.
