Clapping for the NHS

This makes me cringe. The U.K. shrugged its shoulders and voted for a government which they knew decimated the NHS a few months ago.

And now people are standing on their doorsteps clapping. I think it's beyond insulting. I know we didn't all vote conservative but how patronising when NHS staff are putting their lives at risk.

Yes making it a weekly thing is ridiculous. I thought it was a nice gesture last week but now it feels like a way for all the Tory voters to absolve themselves and ‘do something’ to support the NHS, when a few months ago the voting majority were happy to see it run into the ground. I won’t be doing it every week, it feels so pointless when we’re sending our doctors and nurses out with no PPE and scarce testing.

Iwalkinmyclothing · 02/04/2020 09:38

Agreed, but, oh, OP, the deluge coming your way...

NorthernBirdAtHeart · 02/04/2020 09:38

Really? Then don’t take part.
I didn’t vote in this government but will happily stand and clap for our hard working NHS work force, and those working hard in supermarkets, delivery drivers, teachers... all those people who continue to work to keep the country going.

And the 300 people on my street weren’t cringing last week, everyone was out clapping and showing their appreciation for those that continue to keep the NHS and food production lines going.
Cringe all you like, but seriously?

Ponoka7 · 02/04/2020 09:38

A lot of people voted Conservative to 'get Brexit done' (not me btw). A good number of them believed the rhetoric that the NHS would get more funding and less misuse by 'foreigners' via Brexit.

You equally ask yourself why we've ignored farming/market conditions when we know the possibility of zoonotic diseases from them.

Thighmageddon · 02/04/2020 09:40

There's another thread where the Op has said a neighbour has put notes through doors asking for musical instruments and fireworks to be added to the clapping.

There's lots of talk of fuck offs on there Grin

Moomin8 · 02/04/2020 09:41

How exactly is clapping going to help?

If I were a nurse I'd be livid at the hypocrisy.

OP posts:
Luc1nda · 02/04/2020 09:41

I completely agree. My DP and DSis are both NHS. They doesn't want anyone to give them a fucking clap. They don't want a medal.

They want to be given the equipment for the job, they want fair pay and they want safe working conditions. That is all.

Don't make a patronising, virtue-signalling display of yourself. Don't show your support on the doorstep, show it at the ballot box.

Moomin8 · 02/04/2020 09:43

Yes, quite. People should be writing to their MPs asking for NHS workers to get a pay rise and equipment they need. Not clapping.

OP posts:
LouiseTrees · 02/04/2020 09:43

In Spain they do it nightly so you are getting off lightly. I agree it’s virtue signalling after a while but this one is actually for all key workers ( eg teachers etc too), so I’m doing it this time.

Lefkosia · 02/04/2020 09:44

I didn't vote for the NHS to be run into the ground. I didn't want a Corbyn led labour government so I voted for what I thought was the best option.

But then I don't stand outside and clap either I think it's twee shite. I do other stuff like making sure my elderly neighbours are OK, walking their dogs for them, donate to crowd funders for keyworkers and donating to food banks.

firstimemamma · 02/04/2020 09:45

Yanbu op, I won't be clapping. Is it seriously going to be a weekly thing now?

EasyTarget · 02/04/2020 09:46

The clapping is ridiculous. For people who want to be seen to be doing 'the right thing' without actually having to put in much effort. Then they can all feel lovely and smug about what a great thing they did.
I shall continue to ignore it.

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 02/04/2020 09:47

i agree it is pointless, but to link this to voting conservative REALLY?? MN at its worst

blondehalo · 02/04/2020 09:47

I'd much rather donate a few quid to expedite them getting life saving PPE or towards them getting a massive pay rise on the back of this.

Whilst the sentiment is nice, really it's just a farce considering the despicable conditions they are being forced to work in.

Lunawuna · 02/04/2020 09:47

Yep.

Added to it all the “what about the supermarket workers/home carers/I work in a high street bank and I don’t get a clap for risking my life” types. Cannot be arsed with it. You’d have thought most people would quite literally have more important things to be thinking about just now.

museumum · 02/04/2020 09:49

From the statistics it’s clear very very few in my neighbourhood voted conservative. Know for a fact a good few nurses live around here.

Moomin8 · 02/04/2020 10:01

It is a very reasonable point. People voting conservative know that they are voting for the NHS to be further decimated. It's not possible to vote conservative and say you are supporting public services. Same goes for state school staff and anything else state (under)funded.

Apparently though, everyone was terrified of Jeremy Corbyn and his communist state. So that makes it ok.

When you look at the Big State situation we now have, anyway. It's ironic.

OP posts:
Moomin8 · 02/04/2020 10:02

And no not everyone voted conservative but they had a landslide victory.

OP posts:
Lefkosia · 02/04/2020 10:03

You say it like it's unreasonable to not want a hard left government.

LagunaBubbles · 02/04/2020 10:06

I take exception to thay because yes a Tory Government was voted on but the UK didnt vote for them, England did. Not Scotland. So clapping for the NHS does not feel hypocritical here in Scotland.

Ponoka7 · 02/04/2020 10:24

"dded to it all the “what about the supermarket workers/home carers/I work in a high street bank and I don’t get a clap for risking my life” types."

My DD is putting herself at as much risk as some NHS Staff, but on half the pay, with no discounts.
The week before lock down she was feckless and didn't deserve a reasonable standard of living, or three children.

I hope people will view minimum wage retail staff a bit differently from now on. As well as other workers, who are at risk to keep the country running.

Moomin8 · 02/04/2020 10:28

Well @lefkosia

It's about the lesser of two evils.

OP posts:
x2boys · 02/04/2020 10:28

Don't clap than 🙄

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 02/04/2020 10:30

I thought that no health care system anywhere was set up to cope with a pandemic?
I'm not sure this is the fault of the voters at the last election.

x2boys · 02/04/2020 10:32

And I worked for t he NHS for 13 years under Labour as I recall it was Tony Blair et al that started the cuts ......
