AIBU to not disinfect my shopping!

Am I the only person who didn't anti-bac my Ocado shopping?

If viruses live on card or plastic packaging then it can't be for long and surely it would be difficult to transfer enough to your body this way to actually cause the infection. I washed my hands and surfaces after unpacking the shopping and threw away as much packaging as possible before putting away. I just think it's a bit OTT to be spraying your post with Dettol, and disinfecting fruit!

PeterPiperPickedWrongAgain · 01/04/2020 18:00

My friends in Germany never heard of desinfecting groceries, it's not a thing over there, and yet they seem to be copying well. We wipe surfaces and chuck packaging and wash hands.

Scruffyoak · 01/04/2020 18:02

I brought it all to the kitchen and my kids were rummaging through it all....so no I didnt.

pandarific · 01/04/2020 18:03

Time the virus lives on various surfaces is as below op. It's up to you of course and your assessment of risk but I'm doing mine.

I don't either.

IggyAce · 01/04/2020 18:03

Don’t disinfect mine, didn’t think too until I saw posts on here. I wash my hands and surfaces once shopping is away.

RuffleCrow · 01/04/2020 18:03

I'm not doing it. Viruses thrive in warm, damp conditions, far more than on dry, non-porous surfaces, surely?

BasinHaircut · 01/04/2020 18:06

No I’m not. I cannot take it to that level.

SerenDippitty · 01/04/2020 18:07

No I don't disinfect my shopping. Neither did I disinfect my DH when he came back from the supermarket.

Spied · 01/04/2020 18:18

I don't and feel if I start doing this where will it all end...

FreakStar · 01/04/2020 18:18

Glad I'm not alone!

I am doing mine because it gives me something to do. Yes I'm that bored.

SudokuQueen · 01/04/2020 18:22

No I'm not.

Considering for the rest of time, you've had people going around shops with norovirus, flu etc coughing, sneezing and sometimes vomiting over the food in shops, and you never disinfected it then, why bother now?

As long as you prepare the food INSIDE the packaging correctly, you won't get sick. If you cook it correctly, wash your hands before and after handling food, wash food that NEEDS washed like vegetables, then you're fine.

Dettoling your fruit? Bit insane.

easyandy101 · 01/04/2020 18:23

You could always keep it in a separate box for 72hrs before putting it in your cupboard

I don't do this, or disinfect shopping. Even with nothing to do all day I've got better things to be doing than rubbing my shopping Grin

NewYearNewJob123 · 01/04/2020 18:24

Nope. Or letters.

Tottie · 01/04/2020 18:24

I didn't last week but did yesterday when a few essentials where left for us on our doorstep. And I think I will start to do this with every shop, from now on.

Bargebill19 · 01/04/2020 18:32

Nope. Food either hibernates in a cupboard for days before being eaten or is the fridge or freezer - given the fridge always seems to freezer milk and cheese - I’m happy.

22Giraffes · 01/04/2020 18:33

I don't, and for the sake of my mental health I can't take it that far. Once when ds had worms I tried to disinfect every piece of Lego and the page of every book we own. It took me to a very low place. I am of course washing hands and cleaning surfaces and touchpoints as recommended.

Roxymoomoo · 01/04/2020 18:40

I think we are all loosing sight of the fact that the words the government use are constantly..... slow the spread of the virus..... there is a presumption that the virus is still going to spread, the intention is to achieve herd immunity. This is the plan... anyone whos washing their shopping is going to be doing this for a long time.

FreakStar · 01/04/2020 18:48

Yes, the social distancing isn't intended to prevent everyone catching the virus, it' is to prevent so many catching it at the same time. Hopefully in that time they can also produce a vaccine to protect the most vulnerable.

The chance of catching it from shopping must be so minuscule. it's not viable to wash shopping in the long term.

I refuse to do this. Obviously I am rinsing fruit and vegetables before use as I always would (for pesticides), but I will not worry myself to a point of panic. Also, can you imagine the environmental impact of all of the disinfectant and its bottles?
