AIBU to not disinfect my shopping!

Am I the only person who didn't anti-bac my Ocado shopping?

If viruses live on card or plastic packaging then it can't be for long and surely it would be difficult to transfer enough to your body this way to actually cause the infection. I washed my hands and surfaces after unpacking the shopping and threw away as much packaging as possible before putting away. I just think it's a bit OTT to be spraying your post with Dettol, and disinfecting fruit!

I'm not doing it either. Or the post.

cheeseandcrackers88 · 01/04/2020 21:57

You literally cannot disinfect everything. You'd go mad trying. You can take sensible precautions but I'm trying not to get too obsessed with constant cleaning

nobodyimportant · 01/04/2020 22:18

No, I don't.

So, is it worth trying to disinfect your online shopping when it arrives at your home? Lednicky doesn’t think so. Most household cleaning products won’t kill coronaviruses, he says. And even if you use a product that does, you’re unlikely to be able to clean every nook and cranny of, for example, a bunch of grapes. It is more practical to practise social distancing and good personal hygiene, he says.

No I’m not. I get home and wash my hands. I put shopping away then wash hands again. Before preparing and before eating I wash my hands. Plus the food isn’t eaten immediately with most tins in the cupboards days/weeks.

Greenpop21 · 01/04/2020 22:22

Have always washed fruit and veg(pesticide residues)

PrincessHoneysuckle · 01/04/2020 22:38

No I didn't do mine

Macncheeseballs · 01/04/2020 23:11

I do

Alsohuman · 01/04/2020 23:14

No, I think it’s bonkers.

RestYourHead · 01/04/2020 23:16

Antibac wipes won't kill it anyway, but a weak bleach solution will. I'm doing mine for as long as it takes. If we get it we get it but at least I've done my bit to protect my family.

Rinsefirst · 01/04/2020 23:17

I left in my neighbour’s porch three slices of home baked fruit loaf. She tells me it looks lovely but she has to quarantine it for 72 hrs before she can eat it

Likethebattle · 02/04/2020 00:32

I did mine last week and still had a nice case of norovirus. The only place I’ve been since lockdown is Asda.

bitchonthepitch · 02/04/2020 05:58

No, we aren't. The shopping bags are going straight in the outside bin not in the house, amazon boxes aren't coming in the house either, not that we order much. Post, what little there is is junk and goes straight in the bin and we have told the paper boy not to deliver the free local paper, he said he had to so we showed him our large green letterbox Grin

Leontine · 02/04/2020 06:19

I’m not doing mine as cleaning products are pretty scarce round here at the moment and the thought of running out and not being able to get any more is too stressful, so I’m just gonna have to take the chance.

Carbosug · 02/04/2020 08:15

Why do posters on mumsnet keep saying anti bacterial wipes and products don't work. In Ireland our Health Services Executive are saying that many of them do kill the virus and é are advised to use them.

Frouby · 02/04/2020 08:20

Nope. I might leave some non food items in the carrier bag for a few days if I don't need them immediately rather than put away but food shopping definitely not.

Tonyaster · 02/04/2020 08:22

Friend in NHS told me that her manager said virus isn't transferred on paper or clothes. She's handling notes daily

Because anti bacterial isn't anti viral

Carbosug · 02/04/2020 08:24

Oh and yes, I am wiping down my shopping. I'm staying with my mum at the moment who has cancer and if she does get this damn thing I don't want it to be in the next few weeks when the hospitals are overwhelmed and possibly having to make difficult decisions about who to prioritise.

One of the reasons covid 19 is more serious than a normal flu is because its so contagious that when it peaks medical systems can't cope with the sheer numbers they're having to deal with.

Carbosug · 02/04/2020 08:27

I k ow Tony but, according to the Irish health authorities they are still effective and should be used. Have the NHS advised otherwise? Genuinely interested as the Irish authorities have been excellent in the way they've handled this, so don't understand why they'd be advising us to do something that's ineffective.

Tonyaster · 02/04/2020 08:29

No, not wiping shopping.

I wear a scarf over mouth and nose, hand santiiser after loading car. Take shoes off when I get home. Wash hands. Put shopping away including disposing of all packaging. Wash hands again. Sit down while teens stuff their faces.

Wash keys and phone.

jarjarjam · 02/04/2020 08:30

I’m the same @22Giraffes - I periodically have OCD tendencies if I’m not very vigilant and it’s potentially the descent into knackered compulsion again.

I wash my hands after touching coming back home and after putting the shopping away. I wash items as I use them, as normal. I am fortunate no one in the house is especially vulnerable as I can see why that would lead to extra caution and work (and for me, contamination obsession).

Tonyaster · 02/04/2020 08:30

I think some are effective. Makes people feel better to do something? I don't bother personally.

revelsandrose · 02/04/2020 08:31

Unfortunately, yes, this is something I used to do when suffering with severe anxiety and had overcome, I also have a strict decontamination routine when coming in from a walk, I make Dh come in through the side door, remove work clothes and shower immediately. I'm scared that I'm going to be like this forever. Spent so long being told it wasn't necessary and now this has just brought it all back with a vengeance.

PineappleDanish · 02/04/2020 08:31

MMmm, bleachy fruit. Delicious.

No, we're not bleaching or disinfecting shopping. The risk is SO tiny.

Antibac wipes - basically single use plastic - are evil things which should be banned. This whole crisis is feeding the anxiety of the people who in usual times are a bit "ewwww, germs, dirty" about most things and won't eat homemade cake.

Seeing other people talknig about the best way to bleach your fruit reinforces the idea that it's rational and normal behaviour. As for the "well you can't be too careful" - well you can. When it passes the line from sensible precautions like social distancing and washing your hands into paranoia about everything being contaminated.

Marieo · 02/04/2020 08:33

I do mine, but it's only me and DS here so it's not much. If it was loads I don't know if I would bother! Plus yes, boredom and it's something to do. Lucky enough to only have to go out once a week so it's not been too bad. But if you don't it doesn't matter, up to you!
