AIBU to not disinfect my shopping!

Am I the only person who didn't anti-bac my Ocado shopping?

If viruses live on card or plastic packaging then it can't be for long and surely it would be difficult to transfer enough to your body this way to actually cause the infection. I washed my hands and surfaces after unpacking the shopping and threw away as much packaging as possible before putting away. I just think it's a bit OTT to be spraying your post with Dettol, and disinfecting fruit!

I’m wiping mine!
Partly because kids will handle it straight away, partly just to ‘do my bit’ to flatten the curve.

I’m in no way a clean freak, or particularly anxious about us getting it. It may be pointless, but it’s not the end of the world to spend 5 mins doing that (and I say that as someone with 3 kids at home and still WFH full time!)

I put things in a isolation zone! Stuff that doesn’t need the fridge then 24 hours later I put it away.
This used up he called ‘can’t be bothered to deal with it yet zone’
Now it’s
‘Decontamination!!!’

No. Just following official advice. Washing shopping and quarantining mail is a step too far.

Macncheeseballs · 02/04/2020 08:40

I am very wary of anything that comes into the house as you don't know who's touched it but I have an underlying health condition so cant be too careful. Each to their own.

My postman said he's been a postman for 25 years and never caught flu or a cold, and he's handling post all day every day.

starsparkle08 · 02/04/2020 08:47

No I’m not doing this.

starsparkle08 · 02/04/2020 08:48

How do people disinfect letters anyway ? Not just envelop but letter inside or a cheque that could be smudged I don’t get it

Toomboom · 02/04/2020 08:49

Don't do mine either

PepePig · 02/04/2020 08:50

No.

I was going to but I could see it going to a dangerous place in the long term. I don't want to start feeling compelled to bleach every surface or object 5 times a day. I figure I'll catch it eventually- if I'm going to get it from a packet of cereal then that's it! There's no way of knowing if you've even destroyed the whole virus properly, anyway. You could easily miss a spot and that spot have the virus on it.

Welshwabbit · 02/04/2020 09:00

Nope. I am wiping milk bottles and putting envelopes etc straight in the recycling but that's it. Anyone who's only taking 5 mins to wipe shopping for a family of 4 clearly isn't doing it thoroughly so there's no point. And to do it thoroughly would take a ridiculous amount of time, so I'm not.

angelcakebananabrain · 02/04/2020 09:04

If I lived alone I don’t think I would, but I live with my mum and she won’t let me in the house until I’ve sat on the doorstep and cleaned everything with an anti bac wipe! She’s older though, not quite in the vulnerable age bracket but old enough that the thought of getting it is really scary, so I’m happy to indulge her if it makes her feel better.

HaddawayAndShite · 02/04/2020 09:18

Nope. DPs mum has been, but she’s 66 and his dad 70 so I suppose they don’t want to take any chances. But the chance of transferring it this way is so low it’s not on my radar, and wipes just don’t exist in this house anyway. I do find the whole “just doing my bit” and “I’m keeping my family safe” comments a bit PA, indicating anyone who doesn’t do exactly the same is the problem. I’ve not left the house in 2 weeks. I do need to venture out now for milk, bread and butter as we have none. But I’ve noticed people who “just do their bit” have been out every single day with their kids, dropping things off constantly at friends houses (non-essential) and doing things like treasure hunts / trails (picking up sticks and touching everything) on these lovely scenic walks they have driven too also.

OscarWildesCat · 02/04/2020 09:25

Youd surely have to thoroughly disinfect every inch on the packaging using new gloves each time and a new wipe otherwise there isnt any point, I can't start it or my mind goes into overdrive about tiny particles I've missed and I'd be in a very scary place mentally. So, no, I'm not.

Soapy water stops this virus. It’s to do with the soap doing something to destroy the virus’ outer coating and then it can’t survive- or it can’t infect anyone anyway. I wouldn’t bother cleaning packaging, just handwash repeatedly as people have said.

Alcohol based stuff makes for very sore hands and is not as effective against viruses.
