Carnival Cruises are in the shit following the Pandemic. https://www.theguardian.com/business/2020/mar/31/carnival-cruises-seeks-6bn-funding-amid-coronavirus-fallout?CMP=ShareAndroidAppp_Facebook

AIBU in hoping this is the end of these disgusting floating effluent and
emission producing shit heaps that sully our global waters?

When you compare how many cruise ships there are to planes & flights, there is no comparison. Many people who cruise choose to do so because they can't fly. Stopping cruises would stop these people from being able to travel abroad.

nowaitaminute · 01/04/2020 15:05

They’re awful for the environment. Cruise liners emit about double the Co2 per mile than long haul flights. They are also damaging in terms of how they deposit waste.

8000 ppl on a cruise liner vs 250 on along haul flight @swiftier it's not an equal comparison

And out of interest what "waste" are they dumping over the side?
Food? Yes but ground and is only but over the side and they have to be a certain mileage out at sea and they can only dump a certain amount per mile
Oil- no...water that is treated and the oil is taken out and brought to shore
Grey water from showers, baths etc- no again treated like on land.

Swiftier · 01/04/2020 15:08

@nowaitaminute it’s double per person, not as a total......

Swiftier · 01/04/2020 15:10

@Nat6999 for most people in the UK at least, or in Europe, you can get trains to travel abroad. It’s not just cruises or flights.

okiedokieme · 01/04/2020 15:12

I like a cruise myself and never got sick either, but then I actually wash my hands and tend to avoid buffets (why go to a buffet when there's a sit down French restaurant???)

sunfloweryy · 01/04/2020 15:13

It’s not just the environmental impact of the cruise ships though. Yes, it’s not great but as others have said, nor are long haul flights.

It’s just a destructive form of tourism. Dumping literally thousands of people on one tiny port that can’t cope. Cruise ship tourists won’t spend as much money as other kinds of tourists because they eat and sleep on the ship so it’s not contributing to the local economies like people try to tell themselves. At least tourists who fly in are likely to be staying at local hotels and eating out at restaurants etc.

They are grotesque and damaging but people get defensive when you criticise their way of life. That’s why it’s so bloody difficult to make any meaningful impact on climate change, nobody wants to sacrifice anything. Banning cruise ships should be such a small easy win for the environment and marine life, they add little meaningful value to society and there really are so few losers from getting rid - but what do you expect from such a greedy, entitled society.

Swiftier · 01/04/2020 15:13

@nowaitaminute - the International Council on Clean Transport estimates that cruise ships emit THREE OR FOUR times the amount of Co2 per person, per mile, than flights.

Swiftier · 01/04/2020 15:15

@sunfloweryy agree there’s a serious impact on communities.

sunfloweryy · 01/04/2020 15:15

@Nat6999 a shame, but somebody’s need for a holiday shouldn’t override the greater good.

nowaitaminute · 01/04/2020 15:20

@Swiftier an aeroplane is JUST a form of transport a cruise ship it's not just a form of transport though...it is also the hotel, the restaurant, it's the staff accommodation, it's an air conditioning plant, a refrigeration plant, a water treatment plant, a swimming pool, a leisure centre, amongst other things.

When you go on holidays ALL those things are separated out and they all create their own CO2 emmisions.

Cattenberg · 01/04/2020 15:21

Long haul train trips are nowhere near as polluting as planes or cruise ships. Especially if they involve modern trains.

I think it would be great if we could implement some kind of quota system for foreign travel. Every person would get the same annual CO2 allowance for this purpose. And it would be non-transferable, so no buying your way out of it. It would be almost impossible to implement of course.

But this way, people would have to choose if they wanted say, one long-haul flight once every five years, or whether they were prepared to travel by train, or by car-sharing on a cross-channel ferry, in order to have an overseas holiday every year.

CatherineOfAragonsPomegranate · 01/04/2020 15:23

That’s why it’s so bloody difficult to make any meaningful impact on climate change, nobody wants to sacrifice anything.

If you don't mind me asking, how many holidays have you been on sunfloweryy and where? (no need to answer of course).

amicissimma · 01/04/2020 15:26

I know someone who lives on a Caribbean island. When the last cruise ship left in March she said that people were weeping, not knowing when or if a massive proportion of the country's income would return. It's not just restaurants, which are actually well used by passengers, regardless of food on board, but also taxis, tour buses, tourist attractions, shops and all the support services such as supply, cleaning etc

The country cannot afford much in the way of welfare, so without tourists people will just have to live without money.

But hey, at least there will be no large ships blocking the view and the air will be slightly cleaner, so that's good.

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 01/04/2020 15:29

I've never been on a cruise but here....
have alll the biscuits

Biscuit Biscuit Biscuit

FFS

willowpatterns · 01/04/2020 15:29

As well as all the ship's crews, the end of cruises would put thousands of professional performers, singers and dancers out of work.

Swiftier · 01/04/2020 15:31

@nowaitaminute yeah, which is why cruise ships are terrible form of mass tourism and not beneficial for the local communities they visit. Like you say, customers on cruise ships get everything from the ship.... when you fly somewhere on holiday you use and spend money on local services, supporting the local economy.

The carbon emissions of eating at a local restaurant on holiday won’t come close to the carbon emissions of eating on a cruise ship (where all the ingredients, the equipment, the cooks and servers and the customers are being transported.....) Or swimming in the sea/a pool at a hotel to swimming in a pool literally being transported across the ocean Hmm

reasonswhyimdifferent · 01/04/2020 15:31

I bloody love a cruise!

LastTrainEast · 01/04/2020 15:31

Maybe they should be banned, I don't know, but you'll probably want to ban all cargo ships too and replace them with a few million aircraft.

I've doubts about that comparison anyway. It's the kind of thing that works well for a headline, but did you know that cars emit 1 billion times the pollution level of unicycles? People will get the hang of balancing on one to commute in time.

sunfloweryy · 01/04/2020 15:33

@CatherineOfAragonsPomegranate - I’ve been on holiday a fair few times on planes and trains to Europe and the US. Never been on a cruise and never will as I don’t agree with them as above.

If you’re going to pounce on me and say SEE YOU’VE BEEN ON HOLIDAY BEFORE SO SHUT UP, I know I’m not perfect. Tbh I’ve only recently started noticing and learning about the impact mass tourism has on the planet and communities so I’m making an effort these days.

The world is beautiful and for many people the urge to see it is strong, but globally we need to better manage the impact of millions of people wanting to do this on the planet and communities. I feel quite strongly that removing cruise ships is a very good start.

cjpark · 01/04/2020 15:35

I love a cruise - a fabulous relaxing way to see and explore the world. We have only been on smaller ships (2,000) people but I bet half of the people with opinions on cruise ethics have never experienced one. I would rather get on a ship in the UK and teach, experience and treasure my children about the world by visiting fjords, glaciers, volcanos or historical places than fly to Florida for consumerist tat or the bubble of an all-inclusive resort. As with all things, it depends - don't lump it all in the same basket.

nowaitaminute · 01/04/2020 15:39

@swiftier they are beneficial to the communities the stop at... they use the local transportation, they buy from local tourist shops, they use local restaurants, they go to local museums, winery's/vineyards, breweries, historical monuments! You are hands down, in your own world to think that they DO NOT contribute. Some countries (Caribbean) even purpose built towns around Docks and jetties to accommodate this!!

Aesopfable · 01/04/2020 15:39

Why don’t the countries ban them? Why has New Zealand allowed them in Milford Sound? The fault is not just with the cruise companies.

sunfloweryy · 01/04/2020 15:40

@cjpark frankly I’m sure the locals in Venice don’t give a shit about cruise ethics. Their city is being destroyed but hey at least your kids get to treasure the world 🤯

saleorbouy · 01/04/2020 15:40
  • @Swiftier* Cruise guests do go ashore and support the local economy during excursions, many countries rely on this to support their economies, why do you suppose the local governments build the infrastructure and jetties to allow the vessels to dock? On another note, islands like Tenerife rely on imported goods during the holiday season, I actually worked on a vessel that brought produce from Europe to the Canaries and returned to Rotterdam with tomatoes and fish on a 10day round trip. Tourism the world over has an impact on the environment.
Aesopfable · 01/04/2020 15:41

As well as all the ship's crews, the end of cruises would put thousands of professional performers, singers and dancers out of work.

This was the argument for not stopping the slave trade too (employment, trade, income)
