Carnival Cruises are in the shit following the Pandemic. https://www.theguardian.com/business/2020/mar/31/carnival-cruises-seeks-6bn-funding-amid-coronavirus-fallout?CMP=ShareAndroidAppp_Facebook

AIBU in hoping this is the end of these disgusting floating effluent and
emission producing shit heaps that sully our global waters?

I was meant to be going on my first one in July. Never been particularly bothered about cruising but DH worked in them and parents in law loved them so I thought it was time to give it a go (obviously not now). I get the effect on the planet, but what about the thousands of people they employ from poorer countries?

SerenDippitty · 01/04/2020 11:49

I agree that there’s a problem with cruise ships and local economies, people not spending money in the places they’re visiting, but don’t think they’re any worse than all inclusive resorts in this respect.

AutumnRose1 · 01/04/2020 11:52

OP

I saw the Milford Sound 20 years ago. Were those big ships allowed then? I found your pic a bit shocking but it could just be that I didn’t see a big ship.

Angelw · 01/04/2020 11:53

Agree with OP

Rosehip10 · 01/04/2020 11:53

No sympathy with Carnival corp cruises - they treat their staff (especially from the developing world) like shit.

The cheek of P&O cruises (part of carnival) flagging their ships from the UK to the Bahamas "so weddings could take place on board" - nothing to do with the fact that UK minimum wage rules were going to apply to all crew on-board Hmm

Roweeeeena · 01/04/2020 11:53

I really hope after all of this, people will reassess and see global travel and "seeing some of the world" as less of an inherent right. It shouldn't come over and above the responsibility to take preserve the natural world. Scared of flying, disabilities, etc etc don't trump the fact that we are destroying the world.

Scruffyoak · 01/04/2020 11:53

The job industry is huge. I lived in Southampton for many years and worked in bagging but I agree...I hate the environment impact

GabsAlot · 01/04/2020 11:53

i think all inclusive are worse dont bring in money locally they jsut stay where they are at least on a cruise yo9 visit diffrenrt cultures/countries

some people cant fly do cruising is their only option

nakedavengerreturns · 01/04/2020 11:55

Ive lived in a couple of cities and now towns that are on the cruise itinerary. Aside from the utter mayhem the idiotic passengers cause in a tiny NZ town (no we don't have "a department store or a McDonalds" ) they look so bloody dreadful.

Me and DH have noticed how the cells (or staterooms as they laughably call them) look like the estates we used to live near in South London that they have now pulled down for being bloody inhumane.

One pic of the Heygate estate in South London (god rest its soul) another of the biggest cruise ship in the world. Confused

In hoping this is the end of cruises?

No sympathy with Carnival corp cruises - they treat their staff (especially from the developing world) like shit.

Apparently Royal Caribbean, the other big cruise corp, treat their staff better.

MaMaLa321 · 01/04/2020 11:56

Yes, it's going to be interesting how, and if, they recover.
But there must be a strong demand for this kind of holiday (i.e. lots of food and drink and superficial contact with the places you visit) which will return.
I'd be very glad to see the back of them. They have totally fucked Dubrovnik and Venice, for a start. We visited the former a year ago. Several enormous cruise ships docked up, 000's of passengers shuttled into town on mini busses, only buying drinks or icecream, as they're eating on board. The city has become a hollowed-out Disney experience. IMO.
and, even when they're docked, the power is still on, so they are pumping out emissions.

MoltoAgitato · 01/04/2020 11:57

If ship owners want to use a flag of convenience then they can’t expect a single penny from the U.K.

TheFutureMrsHardy · 01/04/2020 11:58

I really hope that we reconsider how we travel after this outbreak.

Those ships are an abomination. As are low cost airlines.

Comefromaway · 01/04/2020 12:00

We know a lot of people who are employed by Carnival, Princess & Royal Carribbean. Dd would love to work on a cruise ship so I really hope they are able to continue.

Rosehip10 · 01/04/2020 12:00

@SerenDippitty As someone in the past who has worked with several cruises companies on-board in a fairly senior position I would dis-agree. Poor pay (including often manning agency cons), poor living conditions and brutal contracts in terms of time away/time back are the norm everywhere.

nakedavengerreturns · 01/04/2020 12:00

@AutumnRose1 they first started going to Milford and Doubtful about 5 years ago. I first went 12 years ago. It's magnificent.

I went last year and a Carnival cruise had parked up right in the middle. Not only was it a blot on the landscape the passengers were the the worst kind of tourist. Shouting, littering, pushing around to get the best spots on boats etc.

Fucking heartbreaking

Rosehip10 · 01/04/2020 12:02

@Comefromaway Really? What job on-board? Not many I would recommend....

dreamingbohemian · 01/04/2020 12:02

I do feel bad for everyone who would lose their jobs but I agree OP. The environmental costs are huge and the damage they do in the places they stop is sometimes really staggering. People in Venice have been organising against them for years. Montenegro has become a popular port for cruises but it's destroying the coastline, it's not sustainable.

I imagine there is some way to create a sort of 'eco-cruise' experience, with smaller ships, cleaner fuels, more restrictions on docking?

The cruise ship companies are also ridiculous, they are complaining about not getting any relief money in the US after registering offshore all these years. And some of them exploit their employees horribly.

Mummyoflittledragon · 01/04/2020 12:02

Oh my. I presume Heygate is the one with no people. It looks nicer than the cruise ship. I had no idea they were so polluting. I’d hard to be on one.

Mummyoflittledragon · 01/04/2020 12:02

I’d hate to be on one..

AutumnRose1 · 01/04/2020 12:03

OP oh I see.

I couldn’t really imagine it.

It’s a tragedy that so many places are being spoilt by this sort of thing.

I don’t travel, but I get the impression cruise ships and air B and B are huge problems. Certainly the latter is where I live in outer london.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 01/04/2020 12:04

"plague pits" seems an apt description at the moment!

Not something that has ever really appealed to me but I know a lot of people who enjoy them - it's a bit of a "thing" to go on a cruise in Australia, it seems!

I won't miss them if they disappear - but I hope it doesn't include ferries - is there any crossover in companies? (Yes of course I could google it, just throwing it out there into the discussion)

leckford · 01/04/2020 12:06

The companies are asking for huge amounts from the US government, it has been pointed out that the boats are all registered in places like Panama so they can operate on lower standards, pay less tax and low wages. So they should not be bailed out. Places like Southampton where they tied and up keep the engines running have some of the worst air pollution in the U.K.

blue25 · 01/04/2020 12:06

Why are you so aggressive? Chill out, get a life and focus your energy elsewhere.

SwedishK · 01/04/2020 12:06

I do hope they disappear completely after this. They are so bad for our planet and that's not just because of them polluting the water but also because the passengers are allowed to completely ruin the little islands and ports they stop at. If we let them carry on there soon won't be any unspoilt parts of this earth left.

Just thinking of them makes me angry.
