Cutting boys hair, what are we going to do?

So, my son usually goes to the barbers about every 5-6 weeks, now they're shut, it's getting long (for him). Should i buy some clippers? Is anyone going to try a DIY? I've never done it before but once his hair gets too long he gets uncomfortable and moody with it, he's 12 so not hard for him to be moody. I've just got visions of me having a go, f-ing it up and school will text to say, ooh we're open next week. My other thought is he'll grow it, like it then never have it cut😂😂. Lighthearted just to see what DIY we might try.

I have ordered a pair of clippers I figure we wont be seeing anybody for at least 10 weeks.
I'm going to watch loads of youtube videos first lol.

GreenWheat · 31/03/2020 17:37

I live in a houseful of men (husband and sons). I have my clippers ready and next week I'm going in! 😂

Iwantedthat · 31/03/2020 17:38

I cut my own hair after watching a YouTube video once, total failure. I was wearing little hair grips in my hair for months after to clip back my too short and uneven fringe. I've just been looking at clippers

I've used clippers on DH for years. It's not that hard, just don't try and be too ambitious!

Cheerbear23 · 31/03/2020 17:39

You’re brave!
My 14 yo usually has a no 1 fade every 4 weeks, so is used to having very short hair and he’s said he’d rather it get ‘long’ than let me touch it 🙈

ZaZathecat · 31/03/2020 17:40

Just let it grow, long hair is cool!

ElsieMc · 31/03/2020 17:40

Yes, dh has just cut our two grandsons' hair who live with us and they are teenagers. They've had sort of buzz cuts, no 2 and no 3. One looks better than the other. I actually like gs2's but I was really shocked at first. Older gs has his cut with a skin at the sides and longer on top which gives the impression of marje simpson iyswim.

DH says it is not as easy as you think so just beware. I had to finish the cut with scissors as well. Both seem quite pleased.

Gs1 is part of a fellow "baldies" group and one or two of the pics on his phone actually made me gasp in shock. Just brace yourself for the mess.... and the shock. Good luck.

BlueGheko · 31/03/2020 17:40

I have a pair of clippers but ds11 won't let me near so I guess he's going to have long hair! It's just getting past the growing outwards stage and starting to grow downwards now thankfully Grin

dementedpixie · 31/03/2020 17:40

Luckily ds likes his long. I give dh a number 1 all over

BearimyJeremy · 31/03/2020 17:41

If they're not keen on super short buzz cut you can put a long shield thing on clippers and just do it all over. It won't be fashionable but should be slightly less stig of the dump.

Moreisnnogedag · 31/03/2020 17:42

I normally do DH’s hair but his is dead simple (no 1 all over, 2 for his beard). I’ve reassured DSs that hair regrows. We’ve agreed next week is hair cut time.

It’ll be easy to spot who the hairdressers’ kids are come school reopening!

AnneOfCloves · 31/03/2020 17:43

Done DH and DS with the clippers. It's not hard.

Ibeingbornawomananddistressed · 31/03/2020 17:45

My DS (15) says he's taking advantage of not being bound by school rules to let his hair (head and facial) grow undisturbed.... he was due a cut anyway so his hair already looks very messy and is sticking up all over the shop, it'll go floppy once it gets a bit longer though.... his facial hair on the other hand, well let's just say that at day 11 of leaving it be I'm hard pressed to notice!

DelurkingAJ · 31/03/2020 17:45

I am glad we have some from our impoverished student days. My hair, on the other hand, well...

Iwantedthat · 31/03/2020 17:46

The growing out is what looks the worse yes, mine has a double crown so sticks up all over. Be taking plenty of pictures for before and after. It doesn't look easy at all tho, barbers have such steady hands

@GreenWheat going in 😂😂
I'll be attempting my nearly 3 year olds hair this week. He has very think hair and is a real sweat box so can't just leave it!

MustDust · 31/03/2020 17:48

Once it's long enough I'll lend them a bobble. DH has to go to work still so his will be amusing!

PatchworkElmer · 31/03/2020 17:48

DS (3) wants to grow it long like mine. We’ll see how we go!

hipposarerad · 31/03/2020 17:49

I'm pretty ham fisted, but both DP (who's still out working, in public and everything) and DS2 are sporting neat buzz cuts, done with DP's old clippers. DS1 isn't keen on the look but he'll probably break at some point.

bobstersmum · 31/03/2020 17:50

I always cut both my boys hair, with clippers and scissors. Perfect time to try op!

TinklyLittleLaugh · 31/03/2020 17:51

Mine are not that bothered. I’ve offered to dig out the clippers if they like.

My roots on the other hand...

x2boys · 31/03/2020 17:54

My dh always does ds2 hair with clipper,s but ds has severe autism and it's easier than going to the barbers,it's ok but it's just sort of short all over but not really any kind of style ?

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 31/03/2020 17:55

The Return of the Pudding Basin????? ShockShockShock!!!

Fluffybutter · 31/03/2020 17:56

My ds 19 has asked me to do his hair .. I’m scared but he’s not fussed if I mangle him Blush

Windyatthebeach · 31/03/2020 17:57

On Monday I got up to 3 of my ds's playing Barber shops with a beard trimmer...
