Cutting boys hair, what are we going to do?

So, my son usually goes to the barbers about every 5-6 weeks, now they're shut, it's getting long (for him). Should i buy some clippers? Is anyone going to try a DIY? I've never done it before but once his hair gets too long he gets uncomfortable and moody with it, he's 12 so not hard for him to be moody. I've just got visions of me having a go, f-ing it up and school will text to say, ooh we're open next week. My other thought is he'll grow it, like it then never have it cut😂😂. Lighthearted just to see what DIY we might try.

@JemimaPuddleCat

Well girls with short hair would be similar to cut to boys hair..

anotherlittlechicken · 31/03/2020 20:20

@BearSoFair Your DS sounds wonderfully bonkers! Grin

sleepwhenidie · 31/03/2020 20:23

DH always cuts both DS’s hair with clippers with a guard on so it isn’t too short —except the one time he started me forgot to put it on — 😬

borntobequiet · 31/03/2020 20:24

Scissors.

BogRollBOGOF · 31/03/2020 20:35

If DS1's goes much longer (it's already shoulder length) he can have a MN hairdo Grin It's that or go back to school with it down his shoulder blades looking far too much like my clone. He has ASD and does not trust me with scissors...

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 31/03/2020 20:39

I cut my DP’s with clippers every second Sunday. The first time was a bit daunting, but it really is easy. We have the Wahl set mentioned above.

I have a Louise Brooks type bob, with a short blunt fringe. Have just ordered scissors from Sally’s. I usually have it cut every five weeks, so I have about two weeks grace for now.

Mirrormirrorlady · 31/03/2020 20:53

Used hairdressers scissors and grade 4 on a beard trimmer. He’d dyed it while at uni unfortunately so cutting away the yellow blond was very satisfying! Who knew I had such skills!

I've already done my DH's, it was easier than I thought it would be.

I think it's easier if you do it when it's only a little bit grown out and you can still follow the shape, rather than letting it get so long you have to start from scratch.

123456abcd · 31/03/2020 20:56

Have ordered clippers!

VividImagination · 31/03/2020 21:29

Just go for Ds3’s style. No cut required.

DH presented DS to me when I got in from work tonight. I was about to exclaim in horror about DS taking scissors to his fringe until I saw how proud DH looked.i managed to back track swiftly and congratulated them. No one is going to see him for a while - I could be magnanimous !

BananaPlant · 31/03/2020 22:03

Youngest DC is terrified of the clippers and thinks I can just cut his hair with scissors and it will all be fine. Hmm

deathswiftlyfollows · 31/03/2020 22:06

I'm a barber and bought my clippers home! My boys will be ok!!! But I'm sort of looking forward to the crazy hair of my customers when I return to work

1forsorrow · 31/03/2020 22:13

I'll be attempting my nearly 3 year olds hair this week. He has very think hair and is a real sweat box so can't just leave it! I've never heard anyone say that about a girl's hair.

NearlyGranny · 31/03/2020 22:40

I think they should all be allowed to grow it out if they want to and go back to school with plaits, afros, ponytails, dreads, ringlets or boy-buns according to their hair type and personal taste. Meanwhile we should offer buzz cuts and pudding basin crops to all the girls who want them. That would wind the gender advisory charities up something chronic when the kids go back as they seem so fixated on gender conformity and helpfully suggesting that boys with long hair really want to be girls and vice versa. Let them tell a whole schoolful and see how that goes down.

My dd was well overdue a haircut before lockdown and it’s now long enough to tie up in a bobble! It think we’ll see how long it gets.

BearSoFair · 01/04/2020 10:40

@anotherlittlechicken, which one?! They both have their moments Grin Grin

NannyKasey · 01/04/2020 17:26

I had a conversation with my adult DS, his hair is fairly tidy as it should have been cut last Saturday, he's going to let it grow, his beard is his pride and joy and he said he would rather shave his head than lose his beard (he's 27 and has had the beard since he was 16). My hair is longer than it's been for years as I grew it so I could wear my hair up for my friends wedding (I was MOH). My biggest issues are my fringe, it's down to my nose and I will look like Cousin It from the Addams Family before my hairdresser can cut it and as a recent convert to dyeing my hair (again for the wedding!) my grey roots are showing, the day after this lockdown finishes I will be going over to DDs to see DGDs and also get her to dye my hair

Holidayz · 02/04/2020 02:34

Girls can have short hair too. Bit disappointed in this thread.

Anyway, DD, 15 has a number two sides and back and floppy top. Has her hair cut every 4-5 weeks normally. Today she bleached it, soon she's dying it green and when it gets too long/grows out she's going to clipper the whole lot off.

Let's have a cheer for girls that don't confirm to the stereotypes.

TonytheDog · 02/04/2020 02:55

I've let both my DD (12) and DS (13) do their own. Then they joined forces to do mine.

IHaveBrilloHair · 02/04/2020 03:09

A few years ago Dd had dyed her hair blue, she was fed up with the colour and went to a local hairdressers to ask if they could get it out.
They said it would really ruin the condition of her hair if they did, the best way was to have it cut short but they wouldn't reccomend it as that was a haircut for boys.
She gave herself a pixie crop and looked amazing.

Hah, what a brilliant idea. 😅😅 For a while I've been thinking of cutting all my hair off, I think I might just take advantage of the current situation and take the plunge. At least if it turns out to be a disaster no-one will see it 😁

dementedpixie · 02/04/2020 08:46

Dont know if ds would trust me to cut his hair but his fringe has made it to mouth level and his hair sits at his collar (he has longer hair anyway). Dd lets me cut her fringe and the rest is down to her bum. My fringe will need done soon but I'll do it myself

Clockworkprincess · 02/04/2020 08:56

Ds4 has just started having his hair cut into styles and has said no to either one of us cutting it. Very thick hair that has suddenly developed a wave 😂😂 at the mo there's tufts sticking uo everywhere but figured may as well let it grow for now
