Cutting boys hair, what are we going to do?

So, my son usually goes to the barbers about every 5-6 weeks, now they're shut, it's getting long (for him). Should i buy some clippers? Is anyone going to try a DIY? I've never done it before but once his hair gets too long he gets uncomfortable and moody with it, he's 12 so not hard for him to be moody. I've just got visions of me having a go, f-ing it up and school will text to say, ooh we're open next week. My other thought is he'll grow it, like it then never have it cut😂😂. Lighthearted just to see what DIY we might try.

I was looking at clippers this morning - one side of my head is shaved. Is it easy to shave your own hair and not mess it up?
OP - lots of choice in boots and argos.

My DS's are growing their hair, it's either that or the pudding bowl and the kitchen scissors.

ShortyShortLegs · 31/03/2020 18:02

My kids have never been to the hairdressers!
DS 16 has a Mohican, DD1 20 waist length dyed red hair (just gets trimmed!) DD2 17 waist length dyed pink and blue with an undercut on one side and a side swept fringe, DH number 2 all over!

Watch lots of YouTube tutorials and also some haircut fails so you understand what not to do 😂
Get some decent clippers and proper hair scissors.
Take your time, don't do it in a hurry.
Cut small amounts at a time.
Put little ones in the high chair with toys to keep them occupied while you cut.
Be confident (or pretend you are in front of teenagers 😜).
And be proud of yourself when you've finished 😊

I've got a grade 3 undercut all the way round. Did it myself with the addition of a hand mirror. Probably a bit wonky at the back but it's long on top so covers it!

In the 70s I had an implement that claimed to cut and thin hair. My adult sons swear they are still traumatised by the memory.

livingthegoodlife · 31/03/2020 18:09

I'm just going to let it grow. Embrace the "dude" look...

@Iwantedthat

I have been doing my DH's hair for the last 10 years, with a set of Babyliss hair clippers. (And a pair of hairdressing scissors.)

The clipper set is one like this.

<

The barber used to charge him £13 for exactly what I do (once every 5-6 weeks.) The clippers cost about £25. They paid for themselves within 2 cuts. We have saved a fortune!

Also, my hair is low maintenance. It's long-ish, and just needs a trim 3 or 4 times a year. I went to the hairdresser for a trim in early March, so am OK til about mid July. I put a dark blonde dye on myself once every 2 months of cover the bit of grey I have at the temples. So me and DH are OK for a while!

This is how DH's hair usually looks.

CMOTDibbler · 31/03/2020 18:13

DH only bought a set of clippers 6 weeks ago as his hair now needs cutting every week to look tidy and he was fed up of paying £10+ a time for little more than all over clippers. So I do his and its fine.

DS swears he won't let me touch it, but is annoyed I won't dye his hair. He had neon green hair last summer and insists he would have time for electric blue to grow out if we did it now

BertieBotts · 31/03/2020 18:14

Just let it grow unless he's willing to have the same length all over with clippers. It's not worth attempting anything else, it's too difficult.

minisoksmakehardwork · 31/03/2020 18:18

The men in our house had their cut 2 days before barbers were closed. I am grateful that DS1 will only let one barber do his hair because after a very long gap between cuts, it means they won't look too bad for the next few weeks and they were all done shorter than usual as the barber anticipated closure. I wouldn't dare cut their hair as I would mess it up.

The only one I have attempted is DD2's as her curls were so wild I figured even if I messed it up, it's curly so won't be too noticeable. Damped her hair and took an electric razor to the bottom, took off a good couple of inches and she was very happy with it. but then she is nearly 8 so...

What about girls' hair? Is this the first time that people are expecting them not to care what they look like? Shock

BuzzingtheBee · 31/03/2020 18:19

Im going to let it grow!

Jeleste · 31/03/2020 18:19

I clip my sons hair. Hes never been to a hairdresser. I just use the clipper for the back and sides to make it short and clip it a bit longer over the top. Then i even out the top with scissors.
Luckily he doesnt have stick straight hair, that way its not so obvious when its not perfect.

Most important part is to start longer rather than too short. You can always clip a bit more and more if its too long, but if you set the clippers to too short, theres no going back. I learnt that the hard way. Actually my husband did. I cut his hair too sometimes.

MarshaBradyo · 31/03/2020 18:20

I said to D’s he could trim his fringe
He did all his hair
It’s a 2020 look for sure

Jeleste · 31/03/2020 18:20

Oh and girls hair is much easier than boys if you just wanna keep it tidy at the ends. Would be hard to change hairstyle completely, but you cant really do anything wrong just trimming the ends.

schnubbins · 31/03/2020 18:23

My son came home looking like an escaped convict. He had shaved everything off.My husband looks hilarious .He has scalp problems because he has so much hair on his head.I gave him some of my stuff to calm it down but he looks like someone that got a fright.I do not know what we are going to do with him.DS 2 has really thick curly hair like me We are going to be like cavemen.

Ciwirocks · 31/03/2020 18:23

I am leaving my ds’s hair to grow, I have always wondered if he would suit it better longer and there is no better time to go through the awkward growing out phase

Cutting boys hair, what are we going to do?
Littleroundone · 31/03/2020 18:35

I do my boys hair with clippers and hairdresser scissors . Just go slow. I do shorter at back then heavier at top. Use the highest setting at first on the clippers. You can always go shorter. Then scissors round ears. I find that doing point cutting easier so chop up into hair rather than straight across.

Pyjamaface · 31/03/2020 18:36

I cut DS' hair anyway. No3 all over, done and swept in 20 minutes.
DP desperately needs a haircut but doesn't want a buzz cut so he'll just wait til he can get out.
I need a trim but I'll probably do it myself and when I can go to the hairdressers to have the layers put back in
