Cutting boys hair, what are we going to do?

So, my son usually goes to the barbers about every 5-6 weeks, now they're shut, it's getting long (for him). Should i buy some clippers? Is anyone going to try a DIY? I've never done it before but once his hair gets too long he gets uncomfortable and moody with it, he's 12 so not hard for him to be moody. I've just got visions of me having a go, f-ing it up and school will text to say, ooh we're open next week. My other thought is he'll grow it, like it then never have it cut😂😂. Lighthearted just to see what DIY we might try.

@ShortyShortLegs your family sound v cool!

DonttouchthatLarry · 31/03/2020 18:49

Windy that's not a bad attempt!

Iwantedthat · 31/03/2020 18:59

I might look at some videos, research and all that. My daughter very rarely has her hair cut anyway but I'm sure I could do the ends, she's enjoying the looser look at the moment and being able to have it down, instead of tight pony tail/ plait for avoiding nits 😬. Getting curious myself about letting DS grow his now, he's got lovely red hair. Hmm I'll think again in 2-3 weeks,

@13anotherlittlechicken
Thanks for that. I only go myself about twice a year once I build up to it, and do home dye. My grey is just showing through now,. Own fault for going darker.

My boy, 7 needs a haircut so I gave him a choice of DH giving him a number 2 all over with the clippers, or just letting it grow, he opted for the latter!

BeetrootRocks · 31/03/2020 19:08

Ordered clippers last week. Looking at them. I have short back and sides get a cut every 5 weeks. Girls are ok but DH will need a trim. I used to do my brother's back in the 90s so unless it's same length all over it's really hard to get something even passable! We'll see how we go!

LagunaBubbles · 31/03/2020 19:10

My DH has just made not a bad job of our 12 year olds hair with the clippers, all kind of shaved around the sides and back, bit longer on top. I did however then notice a scar on the back of his head which my 17 year old helpfully td me was caused by Dad clippering it last Summer on holiday!! Grin

DramaAlpaca · 31/03/2020 19:12

DH wants me to cut his. I think he's very brave indeed.

I had mine cut and highlighted just before the lockdown, thank god.

Serin · 31/03/2020 19:13

Well I can manage the Ddog and he is a very hairy Llhasa apso.....mind you the vet did once exclaim " Jeez, who cut his hair, you should ask for your money back" GrinGrin

MayTheGodsBeEverInYourFavour · 31/03/2020 19:13

Clippers with comb attachments are definitely much easier than comb & scissors. There's been a run on clippers though, unsurprisingly, they are completely out of stock at Boots online, although I managed to get some in store today. I have a clipper cut, & DH has short hair, it's pretty easy once you get the hang of it. (I usually do my own!)

ACupOfTeaSolvesEverything · 31/03/2020 19:15

I did DS with clippers last week and did my own with scissors a couple of days ago. We look ok!

Nat6999 · 31/03/2020 19:16

My ds has hair below his shoulders, another couple of months won't matter.

WaxOnFeckOff · 31/03/2020 19:17

half the boys in the street have shaved their heads!

I've cut DHs for 20 years so he's fine and DSs have shoulder length hair so no cutting required.

It's more me that is the problem. Starts too look very witchy when it gets too long :(

Bert99 · 31/03/2020 19:22

I have 3 boys but none of them will let me cut their hair. Eldest has really thick hair so it's starting to look like a mushroom already, but he's banned me from cutting it. Middle ds has sort of floppy hair and it'll look fine as it grows out. Youngest ds has longer hair than me and has a pony tail or man bun anyway so he's no bother at all.
Am thinking of doing an undercut on myself though.

Iwantedthat · 31/03/2020 19:24

@13MayTheGodsBeEverInYourFavour
I always seem to have these ideas too late, then everyone else has thought the same thing so I probably won't get any clippers, just checked amazon and the ones I want (cheapest) are out of stock.

I say go for it op, it'll always grow back.

I have the opposite problem, ds 4 refuses to have his hair cut even though his dad is a barber 🤦‍♀️

TheNoodlesIncident · 31/03/2020 19:39

We have Wahl clippers that came with a DVD showing how to use them. I've cut DH's hair for about 18 years and DS (11) has rarely gone to the barbers and prefers it done at home so he can use his tablet while it's being done

I hope you can get some somehow OP, it really isn't hard at all. Like the BabyLiss clippers a PP shows, they have numbered cutting guides to fit on them for each length. So you do a first trim all over with the no. 5 (for example) and then change it for a no. 3 to do the back and sides. There are two guides for trimming round the ears so it's kinda hard to mess up. And if you do, well meh - nobody's going to see it much before it grows out! Grin

BearSoFair · 31/03/2020 19:55

DS1 wants to be a barber but hasn't actually started any sort of training yet, he does his own hair in the mirror but that's it! He's trying to convince DS2 to let him do his, conversation over the weekend went something along these lines Grin

DS1: I do my own in the mirror so I can do yours, it should be easier!
DS2: No you'll do it backwards
DS1: Backwards? What are you on about 'backwards'?
DS2: Cos you usually do it in a mirror so on my head it'll be backwards
DS1: How do you think I'm gonna cut hair backwards? What even is a backwards haircut?
DS2: I dunno but you're not touching me!

DS1 is 18, DS2 10

Shouldbedoing · 31/03/2020 19:59

notactuallylolling · 31/03/2020 20:00

Let it grow....let it groooooow!

JemimaPuddleCat · 31/03/2020 20:00

@Jeleste

Are you assuming all girls have long hair, and just need a trim? Hmm

haba · 31/03/2020 20:07

My children have never been to a hairdresser. DS has gone past the Jon Bon Jovi circa Keep the Faith and he's rapidly heading for Dave Grohl!

HairNoMore · 31/03/2020 20:09

We’ve decided it’s an opportunity to try out all the things you wouldn’t usually. I did used to cut the boys hair when they were small, so I’m not terrible. (Although I’m sure a barber would beg to differ).

DS1 is going for a 90s inspired undercut with curtains, and we shaved DS2 a Mohican yesterday 🙈. DS3 has never had a haircut yet, so we’ll probably leave him til after it’s all over. DH has not decided what to do yet, he’s got a few weeks before he starts to look a state...

I might let DS1 loose on my hair if I get bored...

MeridianB · 31/03/2020 20:10

I’m going to give it a go after a lot of YouTube tutorials.

A friend of mine cut her husband’s hair at the weekend and unfortunately made him look like Ruprecht. Grin

DontStandSoCloseToMe · 31/03/2020 20:16

DS is 15 months and has a good head of curly hair which I love but had stated to get people ask when we were going to cut it, I'd just started to come round to the idea of a bit of a tidy round the front as it doesn't stay in its parting and sometimes gets in his eyes, and now everything is closed! By the time this is over he'll have hair halfway down his back. I was due a cut a couple of Fridays ago but was in isolation so couldn't go, and I cancelled my previous appointment due to work, so I'm fast heading towards Rapunzel territory...... DH has said he will just wear hats! Everyone is going to get hairy it'll be lockdown fashion
