To ask if you earn £50K+ what do you do?

I have seen a lot of posts on here where people say how much they earn and I am shocked how many people earn over £50K, so I was just wondering what it is that you do?

Also, do you think it is more important to have a high income or a job that you enjoy?

@StarUtopia yes it is ‘that much’ it’s quite significantly above the average wage in the UK.

Moanranger · 30/03/2020 20:17

Landscape Architect (NOT a garden designer) have my own company, staff etc. Mainly big commercial projects. Enjoy creativity/problem solving, tho clients can be PITA, & the work around running a business can be wearing.

forrasee · 30/03/2020 20:18

I earn that in my role in education policy but not in the civil service.

ritzbiscuits · 30/03/2020 20:18

I earn just over £50k as a Digital Product Manager working 4 days per week. I really enjoy work but not sure I love it. Digital professionals are in general shortage and can demand good salaries, so I plan to stay in this career.

Poppi89 · 30/03/2020 20:20

@coffeeforone Sorry I should have said - definitely out of London

Oh yay, the old "is this a high salary?" debate.

Bottom line is this: it’s quite significantly above the average wage in the UK

Don't think any further argument is required.

winterinmadeira · 30/03/2020 20:21

Consultant in public health / academic. It’s very stressful at times such as now - but I love it.

Yurona · 30/03/2020 20:22

Head of usability research for a big company (not my actual job title, but close enough). Its ok ,,but not amazing

In answer to your question, OP, I'm a freelance writer and editor. I would say loving your job is more important than money, but as always, there is a balance. I quite like my job. I don't always LOVE it, but I generally enjoy it. And I love being self-employed. I would never have been as successful if I didn't like what I do.

And the money does actually make me happy, because it has allowed me to live the life I want to live. So it's a bit of both, I guess.

Penners99 · 30/03/2020 20:25

IT Architect, contractor.

Toddlertown · 30/03/2020 20:26

I’m a GP, & head of practice. Love, LOVE my job Smile

BeamerTown · 30/03/2020 20:27

A corporate social responsibility for a large tech co, using our assets to support charities. I really like it. Way less stressful than my previous roles managing charities, and although I sometimes feel guilty not making that direct social impact any more, I do still get a sense of purpose and social value though my job. The dramatic change in income that came with moving to the private sector still astounds me every day and definitely has made the last couple of years happier for us - I’m concerned that my husband is about to lose his job post COVID-19 and my income means that I am not worried about finances in the same way I would have been before.

Falacy · 30/03/2020 20:30

I write smutty books.

I've been doing it for a year and made £83k (ish).

Before that I was a engineering manager and made just shy of £40k (no where near London).

Scottishgirl85 · 30/03/2020 20:30

Pharmaceuticals, regulatory. Approx £80k and I'm relatively junior (34, and I don't manage anyone). I really enjoy my job as I enable patients to get new medicines, which is a great motivation.

DontTouchTheMoustache · 30/03/2020 20:31

I live in a village in Yorkshire, 33 and earn 50k and I consider that to be a good wage based on my circumstances. If I was in my 60s in London perhaps not (as it means my salary won't be increasing much before I retire) so I suppose there is an element of context required.

Mumofapuppa · 30/03/2020 20:31

50k is a lot. As the manager of a preschool room in a nursery I get just below16k before tax. The job comes with a lot of responsibility and stres but isn't recognised or appreciated. Its hard to see people say 50k isn't a lot.

otterturk · 30/03/2020 20:32

Corporate communications. Salary over £60k with great benefits, private healthcare etc and I enjoy it.

PenisBeakerDipper · 30/03/2020 20:32

I work in business strategy and my husband is a IT senior programme manager in financial services. We both enjoy our jobs.

littlecontis · 30/03/2020 20:33

Tech consultant; DH finance project manager - we are in London

littlecontis · 30/03/2020 20:33

And yes we both enjoy our jobs - grateful to be able to work from home during these difficult times. We are very lucky.

HotSince82 · 30/03/2020 20:35

I'm a nurse in the private sector

wehaveafloater · 30/03/2020 20:35

Property management and developer and landlord ( and mum and taxi driver and cleaner and chef and accountant all these are unpaid though !)

Teddypops · 30/03/2020 20:36

What's a potato sexer?

I run my own inventory business

NemophilistRebel · 30/03/2020 20:36

Estimator / QS

Used to love it. Was all I wanted to do when I left school as I loved blueprints.

Growing to hate it but I think the company has sucked all the life out of its employees over the last year-18 months
