To ask if you earn £50K+ what do you do?

I have seen a lot of posts on here where people say how much they earn and I am shocked how many people earn over £50K, so I was just wondering what it is that you do?

Also, do you think it is more important to have a high income or a job that you enjoy?

I'm an HR Manager and in the main I enjoy it.

thanks for sharing @TownHallDesigner
very interesting and i got a feel for what you do/did. It's functional project/change management and typically those come consulting or IT business analyst backgrounds.

I had an element of that in my job before (involved in implementing an enterprise system) BUT i really didnt enjoy dealing with IT and inevitable data issues! I really wanted to hire a proper project manager but myopic management wouldn't let me - so i think your work is paid well and deservingly so.

I know what you mean as i'm a 'sociable' introvert too - i enjoy meeting and dealing with people one-to-one.

I'm glad you like what you do - i don't actually know many people in real life who do!

@scoobydoo1971 if you don't mind me asking, is your research role related to your teaching job? I'm a teacher who is interested in pursuing a more research-based role and I'd be interested to hear how you got into it.

I'm a forensic psychologist and work in prisons and do private work (which is where the money is and once my kids are a bit older I will focus solely on private work)

DH is a behavioral scientist and works for a large global business and is the breadwinner (over £200k per year) Although a few years ago he was only earning about £40k so lucked out getting the job he is in now.

dwiz8 · 27/08/2020 12:02

Forgot to add I love my job and DH is 50/50

Lots of his work is focused around Chinese businesses so the current anti China climate is stressing him out

pluggty · 27/08/2020 12:20

@dwiz8 how did your DH jump from 40k to 200k in a few yrs? I often read this on MNs but never known anyone to do this is real life so am nosy. What I see is people move for 10-20k then the 150k plus salaries are senior positions & a big jump but always want yrs of experience at the previous level.

Biologist in the agrochemical industry

Senior HR role within professional services, earning over £150k plus bonus and benefits. Husband earning a little less, but better bonus, within financial services.

Fortunate to have jobs that both pay well and that we enjoy, although I enjoy mine more than my husband his!

Florencex · 27/08/2020 12:31

Accountant. I am currently on sabbatical but my market rate is about £120k plus bonus.

I have always enjoyed the content of my job, but there have been times when I have had awful managers and in that case, no it was not worth the good salary.

I’m an investigator primarily and write reports. I enjoy it, it suits my brain to look at evidence and weigh it up etc.

icedgem85 · 27/08/2020 12:40

50K would be a fairly junior salary in my industry, I work in digital marketing (content) at a senior level.

Tbh I'm putting it down to right place at the right time. he applied for a role he never thought he would get considering the salary and got it.

Was an intense recruitment process taking over 3 months, loads of tests, strategic interviews, had to travel twice as well before being offered the role.

The role started at £175k and has risen over the last few years

Also his role is for an overseas (predominantly) business, they value English speakers and pay more for it. For the same role in a UK or EU focused business he would likely earn a lot less (probably around the 80k-100k mark)

pluggty · 27/08/2020 12:51

thanks for answering @dwiz8 that makes sense.

I’m a Advanced Nurse Practitioner. I love my job, it’s interesting and each day is completely different.

dewisant2020 · 27/08/2020 13:27

I'm a registered manager in a big nursing home, I take home just over £60k a year but it is really stressful and certainly not for the faint hearted

DH earns 50k as an analyst in a bank. Honestly in London, we can't afford a child on our 2 incomes. We do own our flat and are in our 20s so there is still time to scale up. But yeah in London it isn't much.
