To ask if you earn £50K+ what do you do?

I have seen a lot of posts on here where people say how much they earn and I am shocked how many people earn over £50K, so I was just wondering what it is that you do?

Also, do you think it is more important to have a high income or a job that you enjoy?

Buyer for a Food Retailer. Pressurised but I enjoy it.

TellLucyILoveHer · 30/03/2020 20:39

Its hard to see people say 50k isn't a lot

A lot of people are so privileged that they lack any perspective. I'm self-employed so my income varies, but it's usually around 60k a year. My husband is a SAHD to our 2 young kids. We live a simple but comfortable life just outside London. Maybe because I came from a very poor background, I appreciate that more than most.

Software engineer, it's interesting and well paid!

YeahWhatevver · 30/03/2020 20:42

Civil Engineer 71k

GinUnicorn · 30/03/2020 20:42

I am responsible for all my companies marketing.

I used to earn 50k+ but dropped to 3.5 days flexible working so now earn just under. Work life balance is key for me.

Hospital consultant in the emergency department. I do love my job, although I may not say that after the next couple of months happen...

ChesterBelloc · 30/03/2020 20:44

@FudgeBrownie2019 what does being an educational consultant entail? It sounds like the kind of job I might be able to do, post-children.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 30/03/2020 20:44

I wish! Teacher with 20 years experience and a TLR2 for whole school responsibility (on SMT) but still 'only' on £40k.

dkl55 · 30/03/2020 20:45

Graphic and web designer. I love my job. Am self employed though. Oh and am not in London. Of course that will all change after this. Will be much harder for snal businesses and I don't think I'll be earning this next tax year.

Neonyellow · 30/03/2020 20:46

Own business. Love it but hard work.

OxfordMum1983 · 30/03/2020 20:46

Doctor
(Would earn over £50k If full time, part time is pro rata)

gwenneh · 30/03/2020 20:47

Earning more than £50k, outside of London, as a marketing director.

God knows if the job will stay stable as the industry I'm in has been badly affected.

JulesM73 · 30/03/2020 20:48

Specialist role in a FS company. £100k+, car and pension.

Love my job.

Villageidiots · 30/03/2020 20:49

I work in property....maybe not for much longer lol. Luckily I've saved my gains.

LadyHalesBroach · 30/03/2020 20:49

Me, tv producer, £75k. DP, commercials and music video producer, £70k-£80k.
Both love our work.

dkl55 · 30/03/2020 20:51

@falacy tell us about the smutty books! I've always suspected the writers of those make a lot. How did you start doing that!?

EmmaC78 · 30/03/2020 20:52

Another solicitor here. I enjoy my job the majority of the time but I work in-house so there is no pressure to bring in fees which makes a huge difference.

copycopypaste · 30/03/2020 20:52

I'm an IT service Delivery Manager. I like the job but love the flexibility and working from home it gives me. I used to earn much more but took a more junior role doing an SDM role and it was the best thing I ever did. It pays me 55k a year, I could get about 29k more if I wanted to work in London or for a larger firm, but would probably be a lot more stressful.

I spent many years in my youth doing all the shitty jobs no one else wanted to do and doing some stressful jobs and moved around a lot. But it's now given me the opportunity to enjoy what I do now for a decent wage. I can support me and my dc's and still feel I've got a great work life balance

Megan2018 · 30/03/2020 20:54

Senior Manager in a University. I could earn far more in the private sector but love HE and the job that I do.

Canyoudomegreaterharm · 30/03/2020 20:55

In 2014 before my second child was on £68k in HR for a retailer, more if the bonus paid out! I hated it as I had got to a point where I wasn’t hands on and my colleagues were dreadful. My husband always says he never saw me as miserable as I was when I worked for them.

I went self-employed in 2015, I don’t earn that much anymore as I work around school hours. So I can see both sides.

I enjoy what I do, my yearly take home now is much less, but my clients expect immediate reaction and in a traditional employer I had defined holidays and people to delegate too.

Also the greed from people I have seen recently (trying to scam the job retention scheme) makes me feel I should go to an ethical employer.

I have always loved what I do, I am a lefty and employee focused and embrace unions and fairness and try to get the best outcome for all.

Sorry for the ramble but OP you have hit a nerve for me as I am at a turning point in my career as to whether I get back into directly employed or keep self employed

BoomBoomsCousin · 30/03/2020 20:56

I'm now a software engineer. Very well paid where I am but I think it's not necessarily over 50k elsewhere. I've only just got back into it after a decade+ out, if I'd stuck with it from when I left college I'd expect to be on a heck of a lot more money now.

I don't particularly look to work to be something I love, but I really don't want to hate it. I definitely targetted a higher salary because I don't think I would enjoy low salary jobs more than high salary ones and I'd rather have more money than less.

DonttouchthatLarry · 30/03/2020 20:56

Husband is a design engineer in the automotive industry and loves his job.

Makeitgoaway · 30/03/2020 20:56

Deputy headteacher

PeterPanGoesWrong · 30/03/2020 20:58

I write a regular column for a leisure type magazine. I bloody love it. It’s an amazing job. I spent my first work years as a civil servant, my middle years as a pharmacy checking technician, I love my job.

Lifeaback · 30/03/2020 20:58

I’m a freelance art director in film. It’s my dream job and I would do it (and have done it!) for much less money- I’m fortunate that I’ve built myself up to a point where the money is good but that’s just a bonus, I love what I do and for me that has always been the most important thing.

When I was first starting out and working for free a lot of the time with the odd low paid runner job I wanted to throw the towel in many times and find something better paying. But job satisfaction has always came first to me and I’m lucky to have a job that gives me that
