Boots - no extension on return period, told me to make unnecessary journey instead

Very unhappy with Boots.

I have an item purchased a few weeks ago that I need to return. The receipt states 35 days to do this.

I contacted customer service to ask if they were extending the returns period and was told no. Because stores were open, I need to take it back to store within the 35 days.

I explained I was self-isolating and had a child with a respiratory problem. I asked if I really needed to make an unnecessary journey in order to do a return, that could wait.

I was told that was their policy and as long as stores remained open I would have to travel to store and return it in the normal way. I’d rather be down the £40 of the item than do this, but feel it is a very unfair policy when they are posting sanctimonious social media messages about how they are helping the nation. Many other retailers have been happy to extend their returns period.

Can't you get somebody local to return it for you, even if they only give you a credit note (as you couldn't necessarily entrust a stranger with a card to be refunded to)? Lots of groups offering help locally on FB.

JamKitten · 29/03/2020 12:08

It’s still somebody going out for something that is entirely unnecessary though!

Unless it’s faulty or you bought online they are under no obligation to refund.

I don’t get why the journey is unnecessary to return it but it wasn’t to buy an item you don’t need?

superram · 29/03/2020 12:37

Why didn’t you take it back earlier? You have been locked down for 35 days.

superram · 29/03/2020 12:37

*not

adaline · 29/03/2020 12:39

But we weren't in lockdown three weeks ago so you've had plenty of time to take it back, surely?

Boots are under no obligation to extend their refund period. Either keep it for the future or wait and sell it on eBay or something.

ShellsAndSunrises · 29/03/2020 12:41

I’d imagine they’d have been more helpful if you’d bought it recently, but you’ve had it since before we went into lockdown... you’ve had it for a few weeks already.

if it was a few weeks ago you could have returned it earlier so YABU to expect them to extend their return policy.

I think the problem here is not Boots.

Ariela · 29/03/2020 13:57

Can you post it back ? Download postage on click and drop, take in or get someone to take in to local PO.

britnay · 29/03/2020 14:16

YABU - you should have done it sooner. Its been obvious that lockdown has been coming.

wibblewobblejiggle · 29/03/2020 14:20

The amount of Karen's that have come out of the woodwork has provided unlimited entertainment

dayswithaY · 29/03/2020 14:24

What's the problem with it? Unless it's faulty just put it in a drawer and forget about it.

playthestation · 29/03/2020 14:25

Can we stop calling people 'Karen' - it's weird.

It's not funny, it's awful for people who are called Karen and it lowers the person who does it to the level of the person they are talking about.

LakieLady · 29/03/2020 14:26

You wouldn't have been able to take it back anyway, our Boots was shut yesterday, despite a sign on the door showing their opening hours and saying that only 4 people at a time would be allowed in.

I was pretty pissed off, because neither of the other pharmacies are open on a Saturday afternoon.

wibblewobblejiggle · 29/03/2020 14:31

Karen's should absolutely be called out.

playthestation · 29/03/2020 14:54

@wibblewobblejiggle

Read again.

I think you missed the part where you are every bit as bad as the people you are 'calling out'.

wibblewobblejiggle · 29/03/2020 14:56

You are free to that opinion. But after dealing with the like for the past 15 odd years in hospitality I am loving the open call outs.

Karen's need to put back in their place.

browzingss · 29/03/2020 14:56

Is it faulty or have you just changed your mind?

playthestation · 29/03/2020 15:00

You are free to that opinion. But after dealing with the like for the past 15 odd years in hospitality I am loving the open call outs.

Nothing wrong with 'open call outs' as you put it.

The problem is calling people 'Karen's'

Karen's need to put back in their place.

Aside from the obvious apostrophe situation, i shall repeat...

Using 'Karen' to describe someone is not funny, it's horrible for people who are actually called Karen and it lowers the person who does it to the level of the person they are talking about.

You are doing a great job of proving my point.

wibblewobblejiggle · 29/03/2020 15:02

Again your option. But it's an easy way to identify a type of person. The way narcissist is parades around here with zero diagnosis. It gives a good idea of who that person is.

keeponandonandon · 29/03/2020 15:02

You should have done it sooner! Pah! What a load of nonsense. Maybe OP was away
could have been working, or generally didn't have the time! We dont all have time to pop to town and god forbid OP didnt have a crystal ball 35 days ago which would have told her we would be in this position! Give OP a break, we are not all perfect....

keeponandonandon · 29/03/2020 15:04

Genuinely.....bloody auto correct

wibblewobblejiggle · 29/03/2020 15:06

And none of those are Boots problem

paxillin · 29/03/2020 15:09

You have a child with a respiratory problem? I would not return it unless it is so expensive it leaves you unable to feed the household. Wrong size/ colour/ flavour I would just use as it is. Priorities.
