So Disappointed in Gordon Ramsey

Just heard the he has laid off all his 500 staff in the uk !! He has paid them until the end of April!! Why could he just not put them In forlough for 80 % of there wages which will be paid by the government. We don’t know how long this will last , people need to have hope that they have a job to go back to when this madness ends.

I really thought the Gordon was better then this !! Just so so disappointed in him!!

@Whatwedontknow what I've understood from people speaking to their accountant is that they are being advised to pay the staff the 80% them claim it back, some businesses are at a point where they can't afford that already

caperberries · 29/03/2020 08:27

Horrible man

Pulppixies · 29/03/2020 08:27

Amazing how many posters seem to know him personally. I mean, you must to slate him like this, surely?

CherryValanc · 29/03/2020 08:28

Think your first mistake OP was attributing any sort of personality to him that you'd have expectations from.

He may have seem considerate of staff or the career development of people before but that doesnt mean he wasn't purely as it was advantageous for him to be so.

mooboy · 29/03/2020 08:29

Does it cost an employer to furlough their staff. I thought government paid 80% of earnings plus NI and some pension contributions?

Staff needed to be on PAYE on Feb 28th to qualify but can be on any type of contract.

I agree - doesn't cost employers to furlough - although might take some time to process the paperwork

mooboy · 29/03/2020 08:31

some businesses are at a point where they can't afford that already but there's help in the form of loans, tax deferentment, grants etc I would have assumed the business was not doing well anyway.

SoupDragon · 29/03/2020 08:31

I know someone who works there. They were sacked so they could claim benefits - this was before the furloughing thing came in. The restaurant business would go under otherwise. The person I know will be rehired when the restaurants reopen

Are people just ignoring this?

Was it done before the 80% thing came in? Does anyone care? Is this just a chance to slag him off?

Yahboosnubsme · 29/03/2020 08:35

Poor staff, that is awful.

Q

PeggySuehadababy · 29/03/2020 08:39

Well, lots of businesses will shut permanently from now onwards. Running a business, even a successful one, is very difficult, it's not as simple as "let's keep it going even without making money out of it". If you are already struggling then you will have to close, you cannot afford to keep it shut whilst paying for the costs. Leases to pay, staff, bills, foods, it all adds up quickly.

Clawdy · 29/03/2020 08:39

Sounds what one would expect from him.

PeggySuehadababy · 29/03/2020 08:42

Have you seen Jamie Oliver last year? I wonder if people who just say he did it because he's a horrible man ever run a business themselves (and I'm sure someone will come back saying they actually do, they run a very profitable, successful business that is blossoming despite the current state of the economy)

SunshineCake · 29/03/2020 08:44

I noticed and thought that too, SoupDragon.

Pulppixies · 29/03/2020 08:46

soupdragon

They just want to slag him off. It’s pathetic

Honeyroar · 29/03/2020 08:46

Perhaps whoever it is that scans the internet for him checking what’s been written about him has also been laid of!??!😁

CanIHaveAPenguinPlease · 29/03/2020 08:49

That’s interesting Wollf

Soupdragon has reposted that the staff were laid off so they could claim benefits & then will be rehired. That leads me to believe they weren’t eligible for furlough pay.

He is absolute epitome of white male privilege. Why anyone is surprised is baffling to me. He really makes no secret of the fact that he’s a dick.

SoupDragon · 29/03/2020 08:55

He has paid them until the end of April!!

So, he's given them 100% of their pay rather than the 80% from the government...? 🤔

(I am neither a fan nor a hater, just to be clear. I have no feelings either way!)

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 29/03/2020 08:55

Is Ramsay the only business owner in the UK to do this then?

Blackdog19 · 29/03/2020 08:56

Would some of the staff be zero hours so furloughing wouldn’t help?

isabellerossignol · 29/03/2020 08:57

Somehow that doesn't surprise me, he's in the business to make money

Isn't that true of all businesses?

Not that I'm a big fan of Gordon Ramsay, a man who has built a huge career on the back of his reputation as a bully. But being in business to make money is pretty much the whole point of being in business.

STAYTHEFUCKHOME · 29/03/2020 08:57

I think you are right @SoupDragon - people just want to slag off a celebrity.

buckeejit · 29/03/2020 08:58

Going to his holiday home is definitely shit irrespective of his reasons for firing people. What a knob

Bezalelle · 29/03/2020 09:02

He was clearly a cunt from Day 1.
