So Disappointed in Gordon Ramsey

Just heard the he has laid off all his 500 staff in the uk !! He has paid them until the end of April!! Why could he just not put them In forlough for 80 % of there wages which will be paid by the government. We don’t know how long this will last , people need to have hope that they have a job to go back to when this madness ends.

I really thought the Gordon was better then this !! Just so so disappointed in him!!

Soubriquet · 29/03/2020 09:41

I’ve never liked him

Always thought he was a knob and it’s clear he sees himself as an amazing man

Gordon.....you aren’t

DamnYouAutoCarrot · 29/03/2020 09:42

@Taddda wow.. That's quite a difference.

WTFdidwedo · 29/03/2020 09:43

A lot of restaurants will not make it through this and putting workers on furlough is a bit pointless for many of them to be honest, speaking as a restaurant manager currently on furlough. Chiquito's and Carluccio's won't survive for a start. If workers are put on furlough they can't get another job, and for many restaurant workers 12 weeks of not working is too long when they're used to 48 hours a week of being rushed off their feet. Some of my team haven't taken the furlough option as they'd rather work in Amazon/Tesco etc. until this all blows over.

I'm not defending his decision as I do think that on a personal level he could have been nicer, but it's highly unlikely he has much say in the financial decisions of these restaurants anyway.

EricaNernie · 29/03/2020 09:43

hmm

EricaNernie · 29/03/2020 09:43

so if you get furlough and get another job do you have to give furlough?

LovingLola · 29/03/2020 09:45

How many restaurants does he have?

CallmeAngelina · 29/03/2020 09:46

I don't see why GR is any more terrible for doing this than anyone else in the same boat is. I have to say that I don't care for the man from what I have seen of him on a TV and in the media, but that may or may not be a true representation of him. Either way, it makes no difference to my life.

Youngatheart00 · 29/03/2020 09:46

I thought businesses could only access the 80% scheme if they furloughed employees (ie laid off temporarily but remained on payroll).

I don’t think there’s a size limit on businesses who can access this.

But as he has dismissed people he won’t be able to access it and I therefore presume employees will be on full pay until end April and nothing from there on.

BubblesBuddy · 29/03/2020 09:49

Why should employers get furlough money and that from a new job? No, you cannot have both.

BubblesBuddy · 29/03/2020 09:49

Employees. Not employers.

AnneJeanne · 29/03/2020 09:50

Most professional chefs are twats.

Nanalisa60 · 29/03/2020 09:50

I really don’t care if this thread is removed be his PR team in 24 hours!!

I have every wight to say that I’m disappointed in Gordon!! As I’m disappointed in an multi millionaire who treats his staff with little
Empathy in such terrible times!!

We are all supposed to be in this together!!

Well I hope Gordon has a lovely time in his holiday home in Cornwall with his swimming pool, and his well stocked food cupboards.

But I will always Now remember him for that way he treated his staff in our greatest time of need!!

As I said very DISAPPOINTED!! In the man

I agree OP

cushioncovers · 29/03/2020 09:59

His type of restaurants are a luxury item and in my view luxury items aren't going to fair well in the current situation. CV has given us all a bit of a wake up call on what's actually important in life and fancy restaurants ain't one of them.
There's a lot of businesses around that are completely pointless now that we are worried about paying our mortgage/rent and have we got enough food for our kids.

cushioncovers · 29/03/2020 09:59

Oh and yanbu op

Taddda · 29/03/2020 10:00

@DamnYouAutoCarrot 'We must all support each other'....

Then 'Notice of Dismissal'...

Yep, he's very much 'just the face' of his business, a very two faced one now sitting comfortably in his Holiday home, getting his pool cleaned while his staff are joining the millions sitting in a queue waiting to hear from UC...

He's also worth 50 million, hardly a struggling business man applying for a grant to come through this.

It's also 500 staff, not 5000, many of which would have been low paid. Considering his first email of 'supporting them', he could have afforded them more than 4 weeks, allowing them time to avoid the rush...

But he's still Gordon Ramsay, so possibly a bit of a reach in thinking he'd have done better for his staff..Hmm

SoupDragon · 29/03/2020 10:01

@Taddda wow.. That's quite a difference.

One is a "personal" message and the other an official document. Of course there is a difference.

Deux · 29/03/2020 10:02

So you’re expecting GR to pay staff from his own personal wealth? You’ve clearly got no idea how businesses are run or structured.

The furlough scheme is not actually yet up and running and won’t be until end April. Employers have to find the 80% from existing cash flow and reserves until they can actually claim it back. For businesses who are not trading this can be impossible.

Livelovebehappy · 29/03/2020 10:10

Not specifically talking about Gordon Ramsey here, as he’s a multi millionaire so doesn’t apply, but people generally judging others without knowing their circumstances. Lots of posts about businesses supporting others by paying them when they’re not working, but not all business owners are swimming in money and they have to do what is best for their own families. And they shouldn’t be judged by others who know nothing of their financial situation.

LemonGingerCakes · 29/03/2020 10:13

.

Taddda · 29/03/2020 10:19

@SoupDragon obviously...but the difference is one is misleading by stating he will support them all, the other is a notice of dismissal....a day later

deathswiftlyfollows · 29/03/2020 10:21

Place marking

ShagMeRiggins · 29/03/2020 10:23

Even if they were all on minimum wage, which I’m very doubtful they are, that’s close to £1,000,000 to keep them afloat for the month of April until furlough kicks in.

doofusmoof · 29/03/2020 10:24

So you’re expecting GR to pay staff from his own personal wealth? You’ve clearly got no idea how businesses are run or structured.

There are numerous threads about how people are disgusting to not pay for their childminders. If I was a multimillionaire I would at least give my staff a few months wages to ease the pain. But I have a conscience!

Collaborate · 29/03/2020 10:24

Never believe the "rich lists". They are always someone's guess, and never take in to account borrowings.

Someone I know does work for people who appear on the Sunday Times list and they say the wealth reported is around 10 times as high as their actual wealth.
