So Disappointed in Gordon Ramsey

Just heard the he has laid off all his 500 staff in the uk !! He has paid them until the end of April!! Why could he just not put them In forlough for 80 % of there wages which will be paid by the government. We don’t know how long this will last , people need to have hope that they have a job to go back to when this madness ends.

I really thought the Gordon was better then this !! Just so so disappointed in him!!

Gordon Ramsey seems to be a deeply unpleasant man. My daughter used to watch his daughter's programme on CBBC and he barely seems to hold in his bullying, awful personality.

I'm not surprised he's done this tbh.

PNomintrude · 29/03/2020 07:56

He's vile and always has been.

Pulppixies · 29/03/2020 07:56

He wouldn’t qualify for the furlough package. I’ve met him a few times and he was very nice. Don’t believe everything you read in the papers

Pulppixies · 29/03/2020 07:57

Rick Stein has done the same so where is the anger towards him?

BillywilliamV · 29/03/2020 07:57

Surely, in order to be disappointed you had to have expectations in the first place?

thegardeningyear · 29/03/2020 07:59

mooboy

No, it isn't. If you don't pay salaries when due you are wound up. It is to protect employees from rogue bosses.

Alialialiali · 29/03/2020 07:59

Hang on a minute. He goes around abusing everyone on his show and acting like a narcissistic, entitled prick...... and you expected better of him?
[hmmm]

It really did move very quickly in the end once Boris got his act together. In all honesty we went from telling staff it would all be fine, to furloughing them in a very short time. Our business is now running with 4 staff (did have 30)

And whoever said upthread - you can only furlough certain staff, which many restaurant workers will not be on the same contacts. Tips for example don't get covered in the furlough pay nor overtime from what I can gather.

devildeepbluesea · 29/03/2020 08:03

It absolutely is not difficult to designate staff as furloughed. They just need to be paid via PAYE. A few other things but basically that's it.

Thanks for this thread. Another one for the shit list for me. Never liked him, never ate his food or watched his shows. Never will now.

PeggySuehadababy · 29/03/2020 08:03

He probably was already in a not so rosy situation (from a financial perspective) and had to close anyway in a not distant future.

Just like many, many businesses will now. And hospitality tands to have low profit margins anyway so a temporary closure might mean a long term one.

devildeepbluesea · 29/03/2020 08:03

But yes obviously they will only get 80% of their basic wage.

mooboy · 29/03/2020 08:03

@thegardeningyear must be more leeway than on the day - otherwise last month when we fucked up with Payroll and paid our staff 3 days late, might even have been 4 days we'd have been wound up by now! Lucky escape maybe...😬

overnightangel · 29/03/2020 08:05

Odious person.
Also waiting to see if the thread gets pulled.

Also a compulsive liar, about his time as a footballer

So Disappointed in Gordon Ramsey
AlternativePerspective · 29/03/2020 08:06

Tbh I can see why these threads get pulled.

GR will have little choice in this matter as will several other business owners, but instead of this being a thread talking about how a business has no other choice but to lay off staff it has turned into a personal opinions thread about GR himself. The two things are not mutually exclusive, someone can be an unpleasant person in their personal life (and given all we know of him is in the media we don’t actually know that,) while still having to make difficult decisions in regard to his business and his staff.

But if the thread gets pulled for what tbh are quite legitimate reasons people will talk about how his PR are on it etc when actually it has more to do with the unpleasantness of the posters on said thread.

Maybe the businesses were overstretched anyway. Just because the government would pay 80% of staff costs, doesn’t mean the business could pay its other running costs if it has no income.

AlternativePerspective · 29/03/2020 08:11

If GR had decided to keep his staff on at full pay for the duration (however many months/years that might be) I’m sure posters wouldn’t be saying that they’d changed their mind about him and that he is obviously a lovely person after all. In fact they’d probably say he was just doing it for the positive PR.

Case in point, Michael O’Leary of Ryanair has donated aircraft for repatriation as well as moving of medical supplies, but my opinion of him hasn’t changed because of it.

Bringer · 29/03/2020 08:11

Google alerts won't bring this thread to his attention because nobody's spelled his name correctly yet Grin

BiBiBirdie · 29/03/2020 08:11

It's shit but it's the virus.
I've lost bookings well into June over it, gig economy. I've not been paid a penny as a result. I'm lucky we have dp with money being paid or we would be screwed.

People want to see him act shouty/ sweaty so he does for the ratings. Several Hell's Kitchen contestants have said he was a really good mentor when the cameras were off.

I'd like to know why he has done this to his staff.

blackberrysoup · 29/03/2020 08:17

Somehow that doesn't surprise me, he's in the business to make money.

@thegardeningyear

Does it cost an employer to furlough their staff. I thought government paid 80% of earnings plus NI and some pension contributions?

Staff needed to be on PAYE on Feb 28th to qualify but can be on any type of contract.
