Nanalisa60 · 29/03/2020 04:48

Just heard the he has laid off all his 500 staff in the uk !! He has paid them until the end of April!! Why could he just not put them In forlough for 80 % of there wages which will be paid by the government. We don’t know how long this will last , people need to have hope that they have a job to go back to when this madness ends.

I really thought the Gordon was better then this !! Just so so disappointed in him!!

@Knocksomesense Won't affect Ramsey himself though will it!

transformandriseup · 29/03/2020 07:02

He's also staying at his second home in Cornwall for lockdown when we hardly have any hospital beds as it is.

givemeanamepls · 29/03/2020 07:11

He/his team could use Google alerts set up to notify him/them if his name has been mentioned.

givemeanamepls · 29/03/2020 07:12

That was in response to @SciFiScream

Iggly · 29/03/2020 07:14

Yet another reason to not watch his tv shows.

Cock.

ShirleyPhallus · 29/03/2020 07:14

A friend of mine lives close to him and it’s well known he doesn’t have the nicest personality in real life either

He allegedly also enjoys to party and has lots of close “friends” Wink

Taddda · 29/03/2020 07:16

@transformandriseup We also talked about this when discussing Ramseys 'Holiday Home' get away- and pool cleaning!

There are a huge amount of people I know of in London who own a second home in Devon/Cornwall, mainly used as holiday let's. I do worry that those people are now moving to them to escape the epicentre as such, knowing that resources there are already stretched, possibly taken the spread with them. Areas that would probably see a low infection rate if not for the moves.

Ramsey's done it.

slipperywhensparticus · 29/03/2020 07:17

Most restaurants live on a financial knife edge

At least he has paid them till the end of april unlike wetherspoons

I dont care what he is like in real life I'm never going to meet him am I

CherryBlossomPink · 29/03/2020 07:20

Let’s hope people think twice about working for him in the future! Such a shame for those losing their jobs

AlternativePerspective · 29/03/2020 07:20

I think the issue here though is that it’s not just until May. It’s going to take a long time, possibly years for the hospitality industry to recover from this, and however hard it’s simply not pheesible to keep staff on for an indefinite amount of time.

Many, many restaurants will never recover from this, and the higher end ones are no exception. In fact I’d say they will be the hardest to recover as people will pretty much stick to the cafe’s and bar type restaurants once this is all over.

I don’t really see how any of them have a choice.

thegardeningyear · 29/03/2020 07:20

While I don't agree with what he has done, furloughing staff is not straightforward. To qualify staff have to be salaried, and I imagine he has a lot on hours only contracts. To furlough them they would have to be transferred onto salaried contracts, and then average wage calculations carried out for each one. I'm not sure if the rules allow you to do this..... someone will probably be along to confirm. Then, once this is over he would have 500 staff on salaried contracts, but probably very low income as it will take a long time for the restaurant trade to pick up. There is no way his takings would cover the salaries, let alone profits after other expenses. Salaries are protected. If they are not paid on the day due the employer is immediately declared insolvent and wound up.

It is quite possible that having done the maths the only way he can save the business is to lay off staff. At least then there will be jobs to go back to.

I suspect his business is on the brink. He is too large to qualify for much of the government bail out help.

Personally, I think he is a horrible person to do this, although I can understand why.

AlternativePerspective · 29/03/2020 07:24

Let’s hope people think twice about working for him in the future! Such a shame for those losing their jobs most people who work in hospitality will lose their jobs. Whether that be now or in si months time when the restaurants fail to rebuild after this.

These are unprecedented times. To expect that every business keep paying their staff for an indefinite amount of time with no prospect of imminent recovery is not realistic.

Wolfff · 29/03/2020 07:25

I know someone who works there. They were sacked so they could claim benefits - this was before the furloughing thing came in. The restaurant business would go under otherwise. The person I know will be rehired when the restaurants reopen.

OpticVA · 29/03/2020 07:27

Agree with @thegardeningyear although it’s terrible for his staff. Still don’t like the guy though.

londonrach · 29/03/2020 07:27

Posting on here too to see deletion message. Yanbu but i bet all in same trade doing the same

Oaksquarebox · 29/03/2020 07:29

So many assumptions on something we do not know full details of.

TheBitchOfTheVicar · 29/03/2020 07:30

That's shit

Growingboys · 29/03/2020 07:30

Massive twat. So sorry for all his staff.

Cailleachian · 29/03/2020 07:32

"They were sacked so they could claim benefits"

But if he didnt sack them, they wouldn't need benefits because they would have their wages and already be claiming any benefits they were entitled to

Am I missing something here?

mooboy · 29/03/2020 07:43

There is no way his takings would cover the salaries, let alone profits after other expenses. Salaries are protected. If they are not paid on the day due the employer is immediately declared insolvent and wound up surely it’s a bit more complicated than that?

barnabybenny · 29/03/2020 07:44

So would you be prepared to judge every business owner for folding their business rather than pausing and using furlough?

Business are suffering, if he can’t afford the overheads without bringing money in then that’s just the way it is. It’s horrible, but some businesses just won’t be viable and we don’t know how healthy the accounts were before this crisis.

Personal and business money should not mix.

SimplySteveRedux · 29/03/2020 07:46

They were sacked so they could claim benefits

This has happened to DD, service business, her job is waiting for her when the venue re-opens.

dottiedodah · 29/03/2020 07:48

SciFiScream Maybe Tana is on here! They have a young child after all.

WeakAndWeary · 29/03/2020 07:48

What barnabybenny said really. YABU to be 'disappointed' in this or anything else going on at the moment. There are no certainties now or for the foreseeable future.

Bluntness100 · 29/03/2020 07:52

It could be a business decision op. As sad as it is, if the business goes into administration, the longer, People are on the books, the higher the redundancy pay, so I’d have to guess he doesn’t think they are coming out of this, not intact anyway, and the business doesn’t have the money to pay the redundancy if this goes on and they stay on the books.

There is sadly a lot of businesses having to make this decision in terms of Will people have a job to come back to, and if not, how long to keep them on the books for. Sadly for many it’s not an emotional decision, it’s a business one, led by the accountants. Ramsey isn’t a one man band.
