No Daily Mail, the young Royals did not lead the clapping last night

They took part.
Just like every other citizen of the UK did
They did not start it.

I know, I know, bigger things to think about and all.

But it has raised the Republican in me to see headlines saying "The clapping was led by the Royal cuties"

We were all part of it. It just started on our street.

You can’t be for real. Honestly this must be a pisstake! I'm very real Grin Been posting here for years. We just happen to have different opinions. And that is allowed on MN I believe.

Beefcurtains79 · 29/03/2020 10:19

What’s up with royal ass lickers on here? You know that they literally wouldn’t give you the steam off their piss right?

chomalungma · 29/03/2020 10:21

I am surprised the DM aren't saying that the Royal Family are leading the way on self isolating and leading the country on it - along with a picture of the young Royals washing their hands and doing some school work online.

@derxa

Of course I approve of the volunteers. They're far braver than me.

So why cant William and Kate volunteer? Young, fir, healthy, no real job to do, nanny to look after the kids. You know, as the royals are head of state and this is a time of national crisis?

If Boris Johnson had declared himself as isolating in a stately home before he got sick, he would have been ridiculed as being cowardly, and rightly so.

derxa · 29/03/2020 10:23

MangoFeverDream · 29/03/2020 10:24

For that I applaud them. They doing social distancing and not putting strain on the NHS

Well, they should be roundly criticised as I believe you aren’t supposed to run off to your second home in the countryside, further spreading the virus. Such an excellent example, we are all so in this together ...

derxa · 29/03/2020 10:24

So why cant William and Kate volunteer? Because it would be a logistical nightmare and put people's lives at risk.

Wolfgirrl · 29/03/2020 10:28

*And what a shit-show that would be, judging by the panic buying and inability to stay at home.

I'm not saying those in charge have any more sense but a lot of people obviously need to be governed by others.

I love old Queenie, ever since the Olympics when she sat there with that look on her face. No one can say she hasn't served her country. I'll be sad when she dies. Charles, I'm not fussed about, but Kate is great and the kids are cute.*

You do realise power to the people would mean an elected head of state don't you? Not the entire population piling into the House of Commons every four years?

And yes a lot of people do need to be governed. That's why we have a government. What governing does the Queen do at present that stops us descending into chaos? I'm desperate to know.

Wolfgirrl · 29/03/2020 10:29

Because it would be a logistical nightmare and put people's lives at risk.

It seems to be fine for them to visit charities to make speeches and have a few photos taken. Why isnt it a logistical nightmare then?

As for putting lives at risk, you seem happy for the rest of the public to do it.

derxa · 29/03/2020 10:31

You do realise power to the people would mean an elected head of state don't you? I don't want one thanks. The Queen is a totem of stability and perseverance in this country.

Wolfgirrl · 29/03/2020 10:35

Idon't want one thanks. The Queen is a totem of stability and perseverance in this country.

How is she a totem of stability? What can she do that an elected head of state cant?

Royalists always bandy words around like stability, steadying the ship etc but they never say what they actually do

derxa · 29/03/2020 10:49

Royalists always bandy words around like stability, steadying the ship etc but they never say what they actually do The Queen is 93. She's been trudging round the country and around the world all her life providing a reassuring presence. She's a figurehead with no published political views. I don't want some has been politico replacing her.

chomalungma · 29/03/2020 10:55

don't want some has been politico replacing her

Many countries cope with a non political Head of State - to do Head of State stuff.

I am surprised that the Queen hasn't talked to the nation - hasn't she got Skype or similar to record a visual message.

What has the fact she is 93 got to do with anything? But what does she actually do to be a reassuring presence?

For example if I were to talk about BoJo being a reassuring presence (vom!) I would say he has been taking control of the crisis, meeting with medical advisors and making decisions about isolation rules, overseeing the NHS etc. Not 'he has been trudging around 10 downing street'.

See the difference?

TheSandman · 29/03/2020 11:06

no published political views

Which doesn't mean she doesn't hold them and is in a position to do something about them. She was reported to have "purred" at the result of the Scottish indyfref. Of course she's a political animal and a powerful and influential one at that. Pretending she's some benign anodyne apolitical rubber stamp is disingenuous.

With an elected Head of State there is openness.

You'll be equally happy with Charles then?

derxa · 29/03/2020 11:20

See the difference? I understand it perfectly.

Wolfgirrl · 29/03/2020 11:22

@derxa

So please enlighten me?

Livingtothefull · 29/03/2020 11:37

'The Queen is a totem of stability and perseverance in this country'.

You must know that that is nonsense and that although it sounds pretty the fact is she is nothing of the sort. The Brexit situation had already shown us how hollow it is.

If you ask me the RF have provided the barest minimum of gestures since fucking off to their country estates. There is just no leadership at all.

Clavinova · 29/03/2020 11:46

See the difference?

Yes - Ireland's head of state has written a beautiful uplifting poem;

"'Take Care':This beautiful poem by Michael D Higgins will make you feel better."

The Queen is 93. She's been trudging round the country and around the world all her life providing a reassuring presence

Reassuring us about what?
That she understands The struggle of living in a budget and has brought some on her unearned wealth to help those in need?
That she understands the agony of being in an NHS waiting list waiting for essential treatment and has some spare medics to cut through the shortage?
That she understands the difficulty of accessing the school of your choice for your children and has a few educational improvements to offer?
That she can be part of the solution to homelessness by opening up a few of her palaces to those in need?

Etc etc

Wolfgirrl · 29/03/2020 11:53

We even get a poem thrown in for 200k! Bargain!

I see there was a bit of a hoo-ha over the pensions former Irish heads of state were being paid - pensioned off in their fifties instead of their nineties;

" 2013 McAleese kept all of her €141k pension."

www.independent.ie/irish-news/politics/mcaleese-kept-all-of-her-141k-pension-29617049.html

"2016 Former Irish President Mary McAleese was paid a pension of €137,749.14 in 2015, the Irish Department of Finance has revealed."

"McAleese was the eighth President of Ireland, and was in office from 1997 until 2011."

"In addition, the President before McAleese, Mary Robinson, who served as president from 1990 to 1997, was paid a pension of €121,158.72 in 2015."

Back to the old changing the subject.

And still cheaper than the royals.

Answer the questions?

Clavinova · 29/03/2020 12:01

Why do Irish heads of state use government jet's? I though that wasn't allowed in your communist utopia?
