No Daily Mail, the young Royals did not lead the clapping last night

They took part.
Just like every other citizen of the UK did
They did not start it.

I know, I know, bigger things to think about and all.

But it has raised the Republican in me to see headlines saying "The clapping was led by the Royal cuties"

We were all part of it. It just started on our street.

William doesn't need to do any fund raising with other people, he can put his hand in his pocket and solve many funding problems if he wants to.

He’s said to be very tight so highly doubt this would ever happen 😂

TheSandman · 28/03/2020 20:18

If you do a proper family tree, there is a good chance that many people on MN are direct descendants of Charles II

Because of maths and DNA

And his habit of shagging anything that moved.

pippishortsocks · 28/03/2020 20:45

History repeating itself....doesn't a well known Russian/American/British politician have a similar approach?

Clavinova · 28/03/2020 21:01

He shouldn't have been tested

He may be susceptible to pneumonia - he was hospitalised with pneumonia as a teenager. Without seeing his medical records we don't know how he met the criteria - are you suggesting Scotland's Chief Medical Officer lied?

StoneofDestiny · 28/03/2020 21:06

So am y Royal family haters. The UK is a monarchy. Why live here?

Em - because in a democracy you can express opinion and push for action against an anachronistic, expensive and grossly undemocratic system to be changed. If you pay taxes to the government you have every right to challenge how they are used - and that includes where they are misspent in propPing up the extravagant lifestyles of a family who do not work for their upkeep and where so many members bring embarrassment to our country.
This is my country, I was born here as were my parents and my children. I think we should be a Republic.

How ironic Charles' grandchildren where clapping the NHS their family never use - while Charles ignored government advice to 'stay at home', took his infected self to the highlands of Scotland and got a Corona Virus text non of the rest of us have access to!
We are all in it together - unless you are the royal family.

Clavinova · 28/03/2020 21:10

I think we should be a Republic.

There is an organisation you can join called Republic - they already have 384 donors. Grin

Wolfgirrl · 28/03/2020 21:16

He may be susceptible to pneumonia - he was hospitalised with pneumonia as a teenager.

I dont think that would be grounds for average joe to be tested either? The fact you know that is a little creepy I must admit.

Let's face the overwhelmingly likely scenario, PC fled to Balmoral as soon as he started having symptoms, because as usual, the rules on staying put so as not to overwhelm rural services dont apply to him. Surely even the most ardent monarchist can admit travelling the length of the country when exhibiting symptoms is stupid and selfish.

Unless he came into direct contact with somebody who has been infected, would he have been tested for only mild symptoms? Think we all know the answer to that one!

But, royalists can keep deluding themselves...

Wolfgirrl · 28/03/2020 21:20

5000 donors, 35000 online members, and that's not counting members of other Republican groups such as throne out, etc. Not forgetting people that disagree with the monarchy but just havent signed up to a group.

But stick with the 384 if that makes you happy Smile

The fact you know that is a little creepy I must admit.

I googled and found a press release - hardly creepy - I asked google the right question.

Wolfgirrl · 28/03/2020 21:23

Just our of interest, as we never sorted it on my thread, what should a head of state do if not be visible and assist the country in its greatest time of need since ww2?

The royalists seemed to be satisfied with them hiding in palaces, releasing the odd tweet and a video on how to homeschool kids in a stately home with expansive grounds and a nanny.

Clavinova · 28/03/2020 21:27

Republic's web page is here - it quite clearly says they have raised £9,724 from 384 donors for their current campaign;

www.republic.org.uk/

Wolfgirrl · 28/03/2020 21:35

@clavinova

Ahh their current campaign Smile

Phrasing it as 384 donors overall is a little misleading!

But then I suppose misleading people comes naturally to the royals and their supporters Wink

Now we are headed for recession, as is most of the world, do you feel they should forfeit next years sovereign grant to help out their struggling country? All in it together and that!

chomalungma · 28/03/2020 21:38

That's a very interesting question.

On that campaign - they want to raise £20,000

Republic wants to raise £20,000 so we can hold an event near you - your donation will help make that happen!

Public and media reaction to royal stories is starting to change. Months of bad press is leaving the royals in an increasingly difficult position with even committed monarchists criticising their actions.

That's just one reason why Republic is touring the country this year, giving talks, taking part in debates and hosting screenings of Republic's new documentary The Man Who Shouldn't Be King.

That all costs money!

I wonder how they will be seen after this crisis - during WW2, King George regularly spoke to the nation - remember the King's Speech.

Is your issue with the DM (fair enough), the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge or their children. Personally I think it was a nice thing for the children to do and show tribute to carers. The DM often makes stuff up so if you read it you're unreasonable.

chomalungma · 28/03/2020 21:42

The OP and my subsequent posts make it clear that it is with the reporting

The DM often makes stuff up so if you read it you're unreasonable

The DM did not make the headline up - the headline is clear in what it said and the subliminal message it was trying to say.

I make a habit of reading a range of news sources so I can see what other people are reading and try to understand different perspectives.

Actually they were my words - it might be their only campaign. Still it's been 384 donors for several days now - not even gone up by one. Shall we check back in a few days?

Meanwhile that video on how to home school kids (Sophie Wessex) has received nearly 700,000 views on twitter and instagram - and the young royals clapping has received 2 million views on the platform I'm looking at.

I can see that the Daily Express ran with Prince William's homeless appeal yesterday;

www.express.co.uk/news/uk/1261270/coronavirus-uk-homeless-rough-sleepers-England-councils-Prince-William-appeal-covid-19

And Prince Charles had a telephone meeting with David Milliband - President of International Rescue Committee UK whilst recovering from coronavirus.

It's a lovely video. No denying that. The children are very cute - especially the one in the middle. I forget his name.

And there is still a popularity for the Royals in this country. Probably fuelled by the sycophantic media headlines in the Daily Mail that this thread refers.

Republic are the definition of an epic fail. The monarchy will be going strong long after the people running Republic collect their pensions! Smile

Ah yes, always the excuse of the media. It’s why the left can’t win elections, can’t get rid of the monarchy, can’t abolish private schools, can’t do a damned thing but howl at the moon...

Are you a member?

Why does Companies House show so many resignations from your organisation? Seems unusual to me.

84 officers / 73 resignations

1Morewineplease · 28/03/2020 22:18

@BlueJava
Do you really think that William and Kate’s children actually understood what they were clapping for? Or do you think that they were told to stand ‘cutesy pie-ish’ in front of a camera and told to clap?

chomalungma · 28/03/2020 22:21

Yep - I've heard of it and no intention of joining it. I am however a confirmed Republican.

I am however acutely aware there is huge disquiet at the way money is thrown at the bottomless pit of royalty. Self inflicted wounds as a result of their own behaviour - Eugenies extravagant wedding, Andrews association with paedophiles and refusal to cooperate with the FBI on it,
Philips openly racist and xenophobic comments, the extended family free loading off the back of their association, Kate's inability to be much more than a clothes horse, Charles', 'I wish I was a tampax' interference in government and serving the longest apprenticeship known to mankind, Edward, failed actor, yet to prove what he can do based on his own merit, and the ongoing pantomime between William and Harry.

A taxpayer funded pantomime, the whole cast yet to prove what they actually do beyond waving at tourists - and even that seems to require a host of sycophants, servants, dressers, nannies, cooks, valets, ladies in waiting, private doctors, hairdressers, makeup artists, chauffeurs, security and 'office' staff to carry out the most menial jobs such as of 'ribbon cutting'.
An extravagant farce in a country desperate for life saving equipment to help staff and patients get through the Covid 19 crisis.

The relevance of royals in this?
Oh yes, Charles flees to Balmoral. Would have made not a blind bit of difference wherever he was - but taking flight when non royals were told to stay at home or face fines - says it all.
