No Daily Mail, the young Royals did not lead the clapping last night

They took part.
Just like every other citizen of the UK did
They did not start it.

I know, I know, bigger things to think about and all.

But it has raised the Republican in me to see headlines saying "The clapping was led by the Royal cuties"

We were all part of it. It just started on our street.

I don't think there is any excuse for no address to the nation, if there was ever a time that it was necessary then this is it. I genuinely don't understand why they are not doing it. I am not pathetically grateful for the minimal amount they are doing and neither is anyone else I know, it is nowhere near enough.

Wolfgirrl · 29/03/2020 17:32

@clavinova

There is so much wrong with your analogies I dont even know where to begin.

Tell me about a PR firm that gets 60 million from the taxpayer a year? And is head of state?

chomalungma · 29/03/2020 17:40

Do you remember when Diana died and Tony Blair suggested to the Queen that she address the nation?

I can't believe that no one has suggested to our Head of State that now would be a good time for an address.

And people know an 'address' when they see on.

"I am talking to you today from Windsor Castle. I am talking to all my people, the people of the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth and the world. These are worrying times etc etc"

'When the debate is lost, slander becomes the tool of the loser.'

Socrates apparently.

Which would imply there was a debate in the first place, and that I slandered you. Neither of which happened. I'm sure Socrates had something pithy to say about ducking every question and changing the subject too. I'll bow to your superior cutting and pasting skills to come up with one.

TheSandman · 29/03/2020 17:49

Has anyone seriously addressed the possibility that she is dead and they're not telling us until the succession is sorted out? Having the Queen die, then King Charles lll pop his clogs within a week would be a fecking disaster for the Royalists.

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 29/03/2020 17:50

In 1915, the Princess Royal, aunt of the present Queen, undertook nurse training at Great Ormond Street and went onto the wards to care for wounded soliders.

What are the odds?

Personally, I don't think we are in our hour of need quite yet - it will get worse. Still quite upbeat where I am - family activities arranged by my dcs' school, online meet ups and exercise classes. My dc are gaming with their friends - I appreciate it's not the same for everyone and people are worried about their jobs but we have had daily press conferences from the government - I'm not sure what the Queen can add on that point.

I cant believe that in your desperate attempts to defend the queen you are claiming the state of the nation to be 'quite upbeat'. The fact you have to trivialise our worst time since ww2 to fool yourself the queen cares about us is frankly an embarrassment.

She can be a figurehead. Someone who the nation will listen to with respect. A figure who unites.

What would she make of Wills hiding away I wonder @Clavinova?

Wolfgirrl · 29/03/2020 18:03

@Clavinova if you're not sure what the queen can add in a national pandemic, then maybe we dont need one.

Livingtothefull · 29/03/2020 18:13

'I don't think we are in our hour of need quite yet - it will get worse.' Well that is a cheering thought; personally I think things are quiet as bad as they can get. It is just bizarre to describe the current mood as 'upbeat'; where in hell did you get that from?? Many of us are terrified of what the future may hold for ourselves & loved ones.

It would be nice to think our head of state cared about 'her people' but I'm afraid there is just no evidence of it. If she is genuinely too infirm to do this herself then I get that but another member of the RF could do it on her behalf (though if our head of state is unable to do their job that is an issue in itself - my boss would take a dim view of my telling him that going forward my son would be doing my job as I was unable to do it).

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 29/03/2020 18:15

You mean Wills the trained helicopter paramedic?

If only there was something he could do.

chomalungma · 29/03/2020 18:21

This.

Whenever people discuss the Monarchy, they say they are for the nation. A uniting figurehead etc

Looks like they learnt nothing from when Diana died. Which is nothing compared to this.

Who would any sane person want to hear from in this current crisis?

  1. a royal family member (Of any age) with no medical expertise on a lethal virus?
  2. a medical expert who knows what they are talking about and has the authority to advise the government what action needs to be taken

I think 1) can be ignored as irrelevant

Clavinova · 29/03/2020 18:22

The fact you have to trivialise our worst time

I haven't trivialised it - I'm saying we are not in our darkest hour yet - by a long way. Look at Italy.

Tell me about a PR firm that gets 60 million from the taxpayer a year?

I think it depends on how much the royal brand is worth to the country. American PR firm Edelman had a fee income $888.4M in 2018.

chomalungma · 29/03/2020 18:25

a royal family member (Of any age) with no medical expertise on a lethal virus

The Address would not have to talk about medical expertise.

It would be to unite the nation and show that they are concerned for their 'subjects'.

@clavinova

I have never ever heard an argument so poor and desperate. I dont mean that in a nasty way, I actually feel for you. It's like you are flogging a horse that died many years ago.

You cant just bring yourself to say, 'Hey, I support the idea of a royal family but theyve messed up here. You're right, there is no excuse for the head of state to neglect her nation at a time of national emergency but I'm hoping they will redeem themselves' so you grab at any excuse you can make for them, not realising how sad it looks.

Wolfgirrl · 29/03/2020 18:30

@StoneofDestiny we are not asking for the queen to make a speech unveiling the new ventilator she has designed. We are saying as Head of State, is is her job to address the public with a unifying speech, to reach out to he supporters and do her bit for the morale of the country.

What do you feel the Head of State's role should be in a pandemic?

Clavinova · 29/03/2020 18:30

You mean Wills the trained helicopter paramedic?
If only there was something he could do

He did - he became the charity patron for London Air Ambulance two weeks ago, having helped them raise £1m a year ago;

StoneofDestiny · 29/03/2020 18:31

I think the Royal Family are an expensive irrelevance on every level. However, for those that feel the need to bow and scrape at another over privileged family 🙄, then their silence might give you a clue as to where you are on their priority list.

They will be tucking in to a nice servant served meal tonight, (not having had to queue up at the supermarket for it and take pot luck when they got in there).

It's about time 'our nation' woke up to the nonsense this expensive anachronistic institution this is.

The NHS workers will fight to their last breath to keep you healthy - the royals won't know or care if you are ill. Who are you etc?

Livingtothefull · 29/03/2020 18:34

Clavinova, your arguments are pathetic, sorry.

George Vl made his address to the nation in 1939 at the very outset of war, before any casualties had mounted up.

'American PR firm Edelman had a fee income $888.4M in 2018' - did that all come from the US taxpayer?

Wolfgirrl · 29/03/2020 18:36

he became the charity patron for London Air Ambulance two weeks ago, having helped them raise £1m a year ago

So rather than put his expensively trained skills to good use, he chooses an honorary role asking for others to part with their money instead. Do you see a pattern here @Clavinova ?

Clavinova · 29/03/2020 18:36

their silence might give you a clue as to where you are on their priority list.

They haven't been silent though - the Sun newspaper today;

"YOU'RE NOT ALONE Kate Middleton and Prince William launch £5m scheme to help UK’s mental health charities during coronavirus lockdown."
