What will happen? Obviously things will take a long time to go back to complete normality but will shops re open? Will people be able to go back to work ?

If it's 12 weeks they'll be dealing with more suicides than corona deaths. Can't imagine how hard it must be if you live alone rn, or in a tiny flat with screaming kids.

NettleTea · 26/03/2020 22:21

quite alot of the vulnerable are not elderly though.
My daughter is extreme high risk. She has 3 of the conditions that put you at high risk, but although one is life shortening, if managed she should make 50. She's 19. So I dont particularly want her popping off 30 years early for the sake of staying home a bit longer

Looking at 12 week lockdown minimum

Mumlove5 · 26/03/2020 22:21

Um, did anyone read today that the number of deaths could now be substantially lower than 20,000?
The Doom and Gloom Imperial College Model needs to be seriously questioned. Why no one isn’t is beyond me!

Sapphiresunrise · 26/03/2020 22:23

I think stating that we are all going to get infected is untrue and also will cause panic in people. Yes, a signifiant part of the population will get it, but it's not a dead cert that you will get it at some point, not at all.

Mumlove5 · 26/03/2020 22:23

Wondering what will happen to the NHS and healthcare in general if we lock-up people for weeks and months on end? Will the NHS be able to function without an economy?

OhTheRoses · 26/03/2020 22:23

I've been questioning it since Feb and getting absolutely slated for it. Lock down is disproportionate compared to the potential impact.

BeijingBikini · 26/03/2020 22:24

12 week lockdown could ruin the economy to the point of having to take a wheelbarrow full of notes to the shop for a loaf of bread. There's no magic money forest to pay everyone to sit at home for months on end. The money is borrowed and we will have to pay it back.

StormyClouds · 26/03/2020 22:24

Hopefully it will be over soon. The police have already demonstrated that they can't be trusted with these new powers as seen by their drone filming and shaming of walkers in the Peak District today who were doing NOTHING WRONG and were observing social distancing.

God knows what they would do if given more powers. It wouldn't surprise me if we had many more Jean Charles de Menezes type cases. Many officers are relishing the chance to abuse their power and bully people.

Livelovebehappy · 26/03/2020 22:24

Even when we get to a stage of no more infections reported, the government will probably want to err on the side of caution and keep lockdown for another few weeks just to be sure. The worst thing would be relaxing things too soon and it all escalating again

Sapphiresunrise · 26/03/2020 22:26

I agree. Isolation is used as a form of torture (and sadly, some people will be trapped in DV situations, or unable to get any food, in poverty). I do worry too that this will lead to a higher number of suicides and I really, really hope it is shorter than anticipated.
For now, we can make estimations but telling people on here "It's going to be X amount of weeks/months." is very ill-advised, because nobody knows.

BeijingBikini · 26/03/2020 22:26

Lockdown, especially if for months, is completely disproportionate but no-one can really think past "panic! corona! death" to the fact that millions won't have jobs to go back to and there will be mass homelessness and poverty.

OneOfTheGrundys · 26/03/2020 22:28

12 weeks minimum. I’ve told my DCs to expect to return to school in September. Even then it could get locked down again, with the autumnal viral surge.
Anything earlier will be a bonus.

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 26/03/2020 22:28

It’s crazy. We will be finding old people dead in properties from starvation and young people who have committed suicide. All frontline medical staff redeployed so if someone healthy breaks an arm, it won’t be properly seen to. All non essential anything removed.

Millions of us will lose our livelihoods. It will reverberate for decades. We will get another bloody virus again anyway as we are trashing the world. We need to plan better than this.

I am desperately sorry for vulnerable people but I would suggest isolating them (as they are having to do anyway) whilst the rest of the population gets it, we find some treatments and vaccines. Because isolating the whole world? I give it another two months and there will be unrest

chomalungma · 26/03/2020 22:28

What worries me is the attitude of other countries who also have the virus. Do we just stop anyone entering our country for the foreseeable future and quarantine them on arrival for 14 days?

SoupDragon · 26/03/2020 22:29

Why is this in AIBU? Are you unable to look for the right topic?

OneOfTheGrundys · 26/03/2020 22:31

@BeijingBikini I know. Although for us, DH is mid chemo, no immune system so it’s hard to think in any other way.
I’m actively planning how I will support our local economy and small business after this. A drop in the ocean though.

chomalungma · 26/03/2020 22:31

Um, did anyone read today that the number of deaths could now be substantially lower than 20,000?

Science: There could be 250,000 deaths if we don't take tough measure
Govt: We will take tough measures
Science: Because you took these measures, we think there will be 20,000 deaths
Idiots: But you said there would be 250,000 deaths earlier

anniefrangipani · 26/03/2020 22:31

@Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow it's not just the elderly that will die Hmm and I have great news! You can dislike letting tens or hundreds of thousands of people die painfully for no reason REGARDLESS of whether they're dying of tory austerity or covid-19. SOMETIMES more than one thing is bad. Hope that helps!

Livelovebehappy · 26/03/2020 22:32

stormyclouds very unfair post. Our police are great and are currently working in a very difficult environment. I’m sure there may be the odd ‘bad apple’ but to say ‘many’ officers will relish the opportunities to mis-use their powers is an absolutely stupid and unfounded statement. I trust them implicitly to do their job of protecting us.

chomalungma · 26/03/2020 22:33

There is a section for people who don't want CV topics.

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/corona_free_zone/3859766-Welcome-to-the-no-corona-zona

Because for some reason, AIBU and Chat are dominated by talk of a global pandemic and economic and social shutdown.

Iwantacookie · 26/03/2020 22:33

I think maybe around may time restrictions will be lifted but agree with others we wont be able to stay in this limbo forever, so its 3 weeks of lockdown. Depending on what happens in these 3 weeks depends what happens next.

pigsDOfly · 26/03/2020 22:38

@StormyClouds The people shown walking in the Peak District were doing something wrong.

We have been told not make unnecessary journeys, driving to a national park to walk a dog, or go for a walk, is not allowed.

No one should be driving anywhere to take exercise.

StormyClouds · 26/03/2020 22:39

@Livelovebehappy

Look at this tweet and ask yourself how you can trust a police force who write:

"Some of us nerdy cops feel like kids at Christmas when there's new legislation to play with. Soooo what powers of detention do I now have under The Public Health (Coronavirus) Regulations 2020 Wink?"

Or put yourself in the shoes of Jean Charles de Menezes's family www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2016/mar/30/jean-charles-de-menezes-your-questions-answered

StormyClouds · 26/03/2020 22:40

@pigsDOfly

The government have been clear that driving to a safe location to take exercise is perfectly acceptable. There is no risk in doing so- in fact, it is far safer walking in a quiet park than down a busy street.

It is individual police forces and officers who have taken it upon themselves to prohibit people from doing so- as I said, many are power hungry.
