What will happen? Obviously things will take a long time to go back to complete normality but will shops re open? Will people be able to go back to work ?

@tessiegirl
No idea how you deducted that from me saying I know things will take a while to get back to complete normality but ok.

I’m not sure what I think will happen, either total lockdown or more will be allowed to return to work, although I know it’s only speculation

'I just wondered how on earth the country will sustain this long term'

And therein lies the problem. It's not just the country, it's the world. It's not sustainable and long-term much more health damaging than the virus. And after the initially v bad period which countries are semi-handling with lockdown, and we understand the virus a bit more things will 'normalise' I think.

With the best of intentions, we can't do fuck all forever, with uneducated children, crumbling companies and never hugging your friends or "non-householders" .Maybe the last few weeks have made me cynical, but I feel the tide will turn on public and political direction on this after a month or so. It's all in the peak. The virus won't go away, but the hysteria will.

GabsAlot · 26/03/2020 20:56

no wont be allowed to reutn to work for a while i reckon-at least another 3 weeks lockdown

MangePasTesOnglesVilain · 26/03/2020 20:56

They have said twelve weeks for people shielding.

Bellebelle · 26/03/2020 20:57

I think lockdown will be extended, at some point we may see things being relaxed a little bit but on the condition that people properly practise social distancing. However given how many people were ignoring the advice before lockdown I reckon the government will be very cautious about relaxing the rules. Some folk will take even a slight relaxing of the rules as a go ahead to hold parties, especially as the weather improves and the bank holidays come around.

Tootletum · 26/03/2020 20:58

Can only hope. The whole country will be bankrupt I think.

RedToothBrush · 26/03/2020 21:03

three weeks????

Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

Really?

Spoiler: Its not going to be three weeks.

PersonaNonGarter · 26/03/2020 21:04

At the end of three weeks I will be the size of a house.

thequeenbeyondthewall · 26/03/2020 21:04

I saw a pub open today by mine.

Not an obvious looking pub more like a flat roof building but it's def a pub.

Wtf is wrong with people.

howsicklyarsekissy · 26/03/2020 21:04

Won't it depend on the testing though? if lots of us are positive for the virus & have antibodies?

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 26/03/2020 21:05

more likely to be six months than three weeks

howsicklyarsekissy · 26/03/2020 21:06

Obviously not 3 weeks I agree it's going to be longer than that but the tests will have a big impact on what happens, also they could have a Vaccine in as fast as 4 months it's been mentioned also.

allaboardthesinkingship · 26/03/2020 21:06

I work In a dental hospital and we've been told that the dental students won't be back until September at the earliest. Scary thought as husbands a dentist and we need him to be working to make money 😭

Bellebelle · 26/03/2020 21:06

@SouthsideOwl I think you make a good point, human behaviour is a big factor in this. The government must have experts in human behaviour advising them on strategy as well to understand how they can persuade people to stay in as long as possible. People will start to get complacent/bored and decide that they’ll “take the risk” and break the rules. Especially if you’ve got families where everyone thinks/knows that they’ve had it and think that gives them protection - not everyone is community minded and some won’t give a toss about everyone else if they think they’ll be okay.

MondeoFan · 26/03/2020 21:07

I think in 6-8 weeks things will be relaxed a little. This will go on for another 12 weeks for sure. I'm thinking the government will have to extend the furlough once it expires at end May

CodenameVillanelle · 26/03/2020 21:07

Actually nobody can say how long it will be. It's not going to be sorted in 3 weeks but if testing becomes widespread then it will be possible to get the economy back moving again much more quickly as we can identify who is likely immune

Thekindofwindowsfaceslookinat · 26/03/2020 21:09

What will happen? Obviously things will take a long time to go back to complete normality but will shops re open? Will people be able to go back to work

Gosh no. I think the current guidelines will be tightened, if anything.

I think fewer online retailers will be operating, so some impact from that.

We're in the honeymoon period, sadly. I think in 3 months' time, we'll have a better idea of how the rest of the year will look.

PrincessMargaret · 26/03/2020 21:11

I'm in another EU country and talk is lock down will continue for at least 8 weeks. Certainly no school after Easter and maybe not til September.

Tempnamelady · 26/03/2020 21:11

It needs to be as long as it needs. I’ve been ill since Saturday, I’m a healthy and extremely fit ( gym 6 days out of 7) 49 year old, I can’t be certain it’s CV but strongly suspect it is, I’ve never had a cough like it and I feel wiped out.God help anyone who has a pre existing condition.

I reckon 3 months minimum.

maddiemookins16mum · 26/03/2020 21:17

Nope. We’ve got months.

tallpoppies · 26/03/2020 21:19

My children were told “see you in September” by the teachers on their last day of school. I am very much assuming we may be in lockdown until then.

kateandme · 26/03/2020 21:21

errm have you seen the length of lockdowns around the world.3 weeks? hehe no luvvie.tinkle tinkle

Wannabangbang · 26/03/2020 21:23

They've just built a hospital to facilitate 4000 people built with 2 morgues. This isn't going to be over in 3 weeks sadly and this is just the startSad

ilovedjerrymore · 26/03/2020 21:25

They have said 3 weeks as anything over 3 weeks the economy will not survive it will be a huge set back for many years to come. That’s why building sites etc were not shut done for construction workers as they are needed to keep building homes/hospitals etc for many in the coming years And keep the economy going.

Whether it will be safe in 3 weeks to open is very unlikely...hopefully we can get this contained asap!

Flibbitygibbit · 26/03/2020 21:25

Three months. This three weeks was just to comfort us into the thought.
