For the past few years the rainbow has sadly becomea symbol of silencing, sexual stereotyping and oppression for a lot of women and those in the LGB community. If you're thinking of putting one up, please think about how that may make women feel - many of whom have already experienced death threats and lost their friends and jobs thanks to those who wield the rainbow flag as a weapon.

I just saw two on my walk just now and it made me feel like shit. Not the intended effect I'm sure. Please consider something else: the sun coming out from a cloud, or a simple landscape. Thanks.

I mean, get a fuckin grip 🤣🤣🤣

SwimForBrighterDays · 23/03/2020 17:11

SOME gay people don't like it. Doesn't mean we should stop doing it.

laudete · 23/03/2020 17:12

I really don't know what to say about this thread. Perhaps the full list of window challenge items would be helpful to peruse? There is also a separate teddy bear hunt challenge that has gone viral too. As per the attached screenshots, you can likely expect to see any or all of these items in your neighbourhood windows. Assuming kids are still able to walk around their blocks in a socially distanced manner, these challenges will surely give them something to smile about.

This is the first time I have laughed today. Thank you.

Jowak1 · 23/03/2020 17:13

Ffs it's a bloody Rainbow! My daughter has made pictures of Rainbows and they are up in our front window for all to see. As I'm working from home now lots of people have walked past and smiled at the pictures. If it makes people smile in these tough times how can it be wrong ??!!! 🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈

Lordfrontpaw · 23/03/2020 17:14

So the whole country should take down their rainbows because one woman is offended? well Always took the female sign off their pad wrappers because one person was offended!

Walnutwhipster · 23/03/2020 17:15

ODFOD. Go and walk into the London hospital my DS works in and tell them you are upset some kids put up crap drawings of rainbow. Get a life!

juneybean · 23/03/2020 17:16

I'm gay and not sure why I should be offended by rainbows? I love colourful things!

Conrad79 · 23/03/2020 17:19

My favourite level on retro Mario Kart is Rainbow Road. It’s epic and a nightmare to do after a few gins.......

🌈 such fun

SistemaAddict · 23/03/2020 17:21

@Rufflecrow I'm with you on this. I'll happily decorate the windows but not with rainbows. Hate them unless they are in the sky as a natural phenomenon.

PleaseStopCrying · 23/03/2020 17:28

Hate them unless they are in the sky as a natural phenomenon.

I hate that I'm stuck inside.
I hate that our NHS and other key workers are stretched.
I hate that children are missing their friends and education.
I hate that I along with others cannot see friends and family.
I hate that people across the globe are dying.

Of all the things to hate right now, rainbows wouldnt even make my top 100. Hmm

SistemaAddict · 23/03/2020 17:30

However I do get that they are a sign of hope generally. It's just that they have become associated with nefarious actions towards women. Children of the age that will be drawing these rainbows won't be aware of the wider issues. My dd1 hates rainbows as the rainbow flag has been overdone at school. There's even chalk ones on the walls as well as a huge flag flying outside the reception area.

Pleasegodgotosleep · 23/03/2020 17:31

Social media has all sorts on it...

Yep including you! Leave the kids a bit of brightness in a very grey time

RuffleCrow · 23/03/2020 17:32

Thanks @bercows

Don't worry i'm sure in a few weeks when dcs up and down the land are telling their parents "No!" "i don't wanna go and see the stupid rainbows AGAIN!" our benevolent social-media leaders will come up with another entirely innocent attraction. Probably just men dressed up as puppies or something. Lovely Confused

You're just being ridiculous now. Stop trying to shoehorn unconnected things into something that is just to keep kids amused.

SoupDragon · 23/03/2020 17:35

Not that you weren't being ridiculous before mind you...

PleaseStopCrying · 23/03/2020 17:35

So you are now only responding to the minority of posters who agree with you?

What's the point in posting on AIBU if you dont even want to engage in a discussion. Let alone admit that maybe just maybe you might not be being reasonable. Hmm

Lordfrontpaw · 23/03/2020 17:35

I’d rather put up a cartoon, puzzle or joke (ok it would need to be large. Especially since I’m on the 5th floor). More interesting that ‘there‘a a rainbow, there’s another - oh look it’s a... rainbow...’

theoriginalmadambee · 23/03/2020 17:35

All fanaticism is a bad thing, even if it started out being for a good cause.

On a different note please watch squatty potty with rainbows, if you haven't seen it before. Such a good laugh. (Hope link works).

Please don't put a rainbow in your window!
kateybeth79 · 23/03/2020 17:38

Well I just asked my DC (8&6) what they think a rainbow means and they said a rainbow is made by a unicorn and if you see one, there's always a unicorn standing by it. Nothing to do do with LGBT or oppression. I personally don't know what you're talking about either. They also excitedly told me that they saw a rainbow in one of the neighbours windows!

RuffleCrow · 23/03/2020 17:39

I look forward to being told how puppies just symbolise beauty and playfulness and who even cares who might have started the craze and why...

If anything previously associated with fun and joy and other good things starts to become associated with something less pleasant, the best thing is to reclaim it.

Rainbows always make me smile and thanks to a PP I have the Rainbow theme tune in my head. I've decided to put up a rainbow on my window and I going to add large printouts of Zippy, George, Bungle, and Geoffrey. 🌈🌈

Oldestchild90s · 23/03/2020 17:40

My 6 year old brother isn't thinking about the LGBT community he's just happy to do some (half neat) colouring for other people to see. What is the problem?

Yesterdayforgotten · 23/03/2020 17:40

Stamping feet op? I dont know about your dc but mine dont do that. Also most small dc dont get bored of seeing rainbows, my 3 year old doesnt.
