To think Richard Marx was the killer in “Hazard”

Inspired by another thread about music videos.
The song Hazard by Richard Marx and it’s music video. Been watching it again after many years and I used to think it was the boyfriend that killed Mary but now I think it could have been Richard Marxs Character

The fire as well was right in front of the mum. That bloke must have been good in bed for her not to see the fire or smell the smoke

Well I've rewatched the video and is clearly forgotten most of it! So his dad left them to go off with another woman. Then he saw his mum with someone so apparently burned down the house. Few years later, met Mary - saw her in a car with another man and ran off leaving his scarf behind. Then Mary is wearing his scarf and turns as someone appears behind her.

Obviously the creepy sheriff but Richard was no prize.

And why was he cutting his hair at the end?

I have just looked into the song more and apparently Richard was writing the song and he wanted to include the line “and leave this old Nebraska town” so he started to look for little towns in Nebraska that would fit the lyrics and found Hazard. The place does exist

@AllTheseThingsThatIHaveNotDone It defo was Flowers. He saw some other guy holding her hand, and then had too much of the bourbon that she left on the shelf

Up to now, I believed Richard was innocent - but I’ve never watched the Hazard videos - going to do that now 😀

I’ve just watched the video. I can’t decide which one it was.

At the end, when he is looking over the bridge and the camera sort of pans away and down low, is that not the scarf hanging underneath the bridge??

I’ve always thought Richard was the killer to the point where I can’t listen to the song, as it’s just such an apologist’s anthem. You swear you left her by the river, yeah right Richard, you mulleted murderer.

I've just watched all 3 versions!!
Not only do I think it was DEFINITELY the sheriff..I think the house fire was an accident - small boy, floaty curtains, candle burning...just asking for an accident!! Poor Richard 😢

I think the house burning was an accident as the candle was right by the curtain.

And having seen the second version I think Mary killed herself, and that Richard wants to join her...

The sheriff has pictures and fingers prints in his car.
Her face when she turns around is 'oh crap' as though she's been caught.
Richard sings that he needs to down to the river and leave this old Nebraska town.
