Baked beans in chilli con carne - a moral outrage?

I was talking about chilli con carne earlier and someone mentioned using baked beans instead of kidney beans and I wasn't convinced by the idea. I'd now really like to know what's normal! Do you think using baked beans in chilli con carne is culinary sacrilege, a bit gross or that's what everyone does?

Gross! An abomination. Just won't taste right.

araiwa · 11/03/2020 02:32

Absolutely fine

Meercat2 · 11/03/2020 02:34

My children wont eat kidney beans so I wash the sauce off baked beans and put them in. Works a treat

LadyZinnia · 11/03/2020 02:36

I like it. I sometimes chuck a can in as well as kidney beans to bulk out the chilli and make it stretch further. But I’d never claim it’s an authentic chilli Smile

SnuffleBadger · 11/03/2020 02:37

I put baked beans, including the sauce, and kidney beans in mine. My family prefer it that way

Ruddle91 · 11/03/2020 02:41

I use baked beans - just wash the sauce off first then they're just plain old haricot beans but cheaper than buying plain in tbf first place!

PenguinsOnParade · 11/03/2020 02:42

I don't use beans at all. My chilli is meat and tomatoes with spices. I've made refried beans in the past to have on the side but don't like them enough to do it every time.

TobyeBella · 11/03/2020 02:56

I put a tin of baked beans in mine instead of kidney beans. Always have done.

ZombieFan · 11/03/2020 02:57

wash off the sauce and its fine.

tisonlymeagain · 11/03/2020 03:10

Time and a place- I've used them when making a more kid-friendly version. I like how it tastes but to me it's a different meal with them in.

unlimiteddilutingjuice · 11/03/2020 03:20

The Jack Monroe version calls for baked beans (as well not instead).
Wash the sauce off and they're just haricot beans. It's fine.

Confusednewmum1 · 11/03/2020 03:21

I’m also a wash off the sauce and add, not always sometimes use kidney beans, sometimes both, sometimes add butter beans as well and cut out the meat.
I just grab what is going in the cupboard

eaglejulesk · 11/03/2020 04:17

I've used baked beans - and kept the sauce on them (horror!!!!). Tastes fine.

ButtWormHole · 11/03/2020 04:19

The number of people awake at 2am to discuss baked beans in chilli amazes me

JoshArcherStoleMyTractor · 11/03/2020 04:23

Disgusting, sweet and slimy, if you want to use haricot beans instead of kidney beans surely it's cheaper to buy them 55p a tin in Tesco, than wash the sauce off baked beans? Bicarb is added to baked beans to make them softer, it's not too plain haricot beans. DS has chilli with kidney beans roughly chopped to make them less of a choking hazard (15 months).

Nquartz · 11/03/2020 04:37

My mum always did, I thought it was yummy. I don't because DD doesn't like beans of any description.

mrbob · 11/03/2020 04:46

Can’t you just buy haricot beans?

dennisdonut · 11/03/2020 04:46

I’ve used rinsed before if I’ve run out of kidney. They don’t belong in Shepard’s pie 😉

Growingboys · 11/03/2020 04:54

Absolute fucking scandal

GinnyWeasleysQuiff · 11/03/2020 05:03

Kidney beans and baked beans in mine! Don't rinse any sauce of either weirdos

myself2020 · 11/03/2020 05:04

I use mainly kidney beans but also put a small can of baked beans in it - i like hiw it changes the taste (its not really chilli anymore though)

NurseButtercup · 11/03/2020 05:14

I have a question, is it the sweetness of the baked beans (still sweet when tomato sauce has been rinsed off) that people are preferring instead of using haricot beans?

Peridot1 · 11/03/2020 05:16

I want chilli now.

To answer though I don’t make chilli often but just use kidney beans. Think I added baked beans once to try to get DS to eat it as a child. I quite liked it but it wasn’t a proper chilli.

@dennisdonut Sheperds pie or cottage pie is nice with baked beans on the side. I wouldn’t add while making though.

ZebrasAreHorsesInPyjamas · 11/03/2020 05:38

It's called chilli-con-beany in our house. Daughter never used to like kidney beans so I bung a tin of (shock-horror) unwashed baked beans in (it is only tomato sauce on them after all, just mingles in with the other tomato flavouring), and it's a huge favourite. Nowadays I do sometimes put kidney beans in as well as daughter quite likes them.

violetbunny · 11/03/2020 06:17

My parents did this in the 80s.
It was foul then, and it's still foul now Envy
