Baked beans in chilli con carne - a moral outrage?

I was talking about chilli con carne earlier and someone mentioned using baked beans instead of kidney beans and I wasn't convinced by the idea. I'd now really like to know what's normal! Do you think using baked beans in chilli con carne is culinary sacrilege, a bit gross or that's what everyone does?

OP posts:

We buy Branston beans in multi packs so they probably work out cheaper than plain haricot beans, and I don't know if all supermarkets have these.

BarbaraofSeville · 11/03/2020 08:41

But to answer the question in the OP, I don't think there is any 'normal' and it's best to just do what suits you.

Then it’s not Chile con carne

woodencoffeetable · 11/03/2020 08:44

nooooooo
never
but I do put in mixed beans - it's prettier

L1appelDuVide · 11/03/2020 08:46

Arrgh!! No!
Shepherds pie however......

GrumpyHoonMain · 11/03/2020 09:14

In Texas - chilli often contains any kind of smoked baked bean.

mrsBtheparker · 11/03/2020 10:54

Someone does taco beans in a spicy sauce, a mixture of diffeent beans, I use a tin as well as kidney beans.

TerrorWig · 11/03/2020 10:55

I might if we didn’t have black beans or kidney beans.

Fluffybutter · 11/03/2020 10:56

Yep, my mum used to put beans in it .
Doesn’t change the flavours much except maybe removes the metallic taste of the kidney beans .
Works just as well

TheBeeatAmbridge · 11/03/2020 10:59

I put baked beans in mine, with sauce, sometimes kidney beans although DH doesn't really like them, and I put chickpeas in last time, just to bulk it out a bit more. My chilli is awesome every single time.

Enb76 · 11/03/2020 10:59

The horror! Baked beans are droppings from the arse of Beelzebub. Why would you ruin any food with these things?

Loodally · 11/03/2020 11:04

I put a can of Heinz 5 beans in mine, I don't rinse them either.

I also add slices of Chorizo 😱

My chilli is amazing.

Historyofeverything1 · 11/03/2020 11:05

I use both, bulks it out a bit.

redwoodmazza · 11/03/2020 11:52

I hate chilli [I hate spices] but why would you bother to wash the sauce off baked beans? Surely that's just washing off extra flavour that could be in the dish itself???

SuburbanFraggle · 11/03/2020 12:40

Exile

BestIsWest · 11/03/2020 12:42

DH hates kidney beans so I’ve always used baked beans. It’s ok.

TheHagOnTheHill · 11/03/2020 12:53

I now want a chilli but there are no tinned tomatoes in the shops.

SenecaFallsRedux · 11/03/2020 12:57

In Texas - chilli often contains any kind of smoked baked bean.

Or more likely, no beans at all.

caperplips · 11/03/2020 13:03

nope - no way! No baked beans in chilli. Or in shepherds / cottage pie!

SoCrimeaRiver · 11/03/2020 13:07

I'd rince off the sauce first but if you don't have kidney beans, they'd be better than no beans at all. Might taste slightly sweeter as a result.

Buffythesofasitter · 11/03/2020 13:08

Genuinely horrified by the amount of you putting baked beans in Confused. Had always assumed that it was only the occasional weirdo who actually did this, I'm gonna have to rethink my entire world view.

golddustwomen · 11/03/2020 13:14

I love beans so am actually going to try this.
Chilli is my favourite ever meal. I bloody love it; rice, nachos, jacket potato, on its own in a bowl whatever just give me the chilli ha

SenecaFallsRedux · 11/03/2020 13:16

If you don't have beans, make it without. That's more authentic anyway. The hint is in the word "carne." Smile

I do make a very good vegetarian chili, however. But I use black beans, not kidney beans, and certainly not baked beans.

DramaAlpaca · 11/03/2020 13:21

I wouldn't put baked beans in a chilli but I do throw in a can of chickpeas along with the kidney beans and the mince. It's nice, and makes it go further.

Offler · 11/03/2020 13:21

My work canteen made a real chilli abomination the other day, they put sultanas in it 🤢

My chilli gets whatever beans I feel like putting in, always kidney, but whatever else I can find in the cupboards works. Mines veggie anyway, so it’s chilli non carne!
