Baked beans in chilli con carne - a moral outrage?

I was talking about chilli con carne earlier and someone mentioned using baked beans instead of kidney beans and I wasn't convinced by the idea. I'd now really like to know what's normal! Do you think using baked beans in chilli con carne is culinary sacrilege, a bit gross or that's what everyone does?

It’s a meal my children love - I add baked beans/kidney beans in chilli sauce and black beans . Not only does it bulk it out , they are also getting more veg !

Rhubarbpeony · 11/03/2020 06:42

Why would you wash off the sauce? The sauce they’re in is tomato, just bung that in too!

Momof2boys1girl · 11/03/2020 06:44

I’ve never eaten it without baked beans. We have both beans in our chilli

userabcname · 11/03/2020 06:45

DH does this. It tastes fine- the bakes beans just take on the flavour of the chilli.

Spidey66 · 11/03/2020 06:47

I use both. My chilli's amazing.

dudsville · 11/03/2020 06:47

No! The flavour of baked beans doesn't go with the seasoning of chilli. Might as well add a banana.

AdoptAdaptImprove · 11/03/2020 06:50

I wouldn’t like the sweet, sticky sauce in my chilli, but they’re just haricot beans, so if you rinse off the sauce then I can’t see any issue with it. DH can’t eat kidney beans so I use whatever beans I have in the pantry. Cheapo own brand baked beans would give an inexpensive way of having beans in your chilli - less than the cost of a can of haricots.

It's on lar with the tip I just saw in news from some batch cooking enthusiast about making chili by batch cooking bolognese and just adding chili and beans to part. 🤢

Tumbleweed101 · 11/03/2020 06:58

I don’t use them unless I’ve run out of other beans. Nothing wrong with it but prefer kidney beans in chilli.

BodiesMakeForGoodFertiliser · 11/03/2020 06:58

*on par...

Harakeke · 11/03/2020 07:00

I think it's fine - but with kidney beans, not instead of.

I generally add tomato sauce to my chilli, the sweetness mitigates the bitterness of the tomato. Baked beans does the same thing.

Rubychard · 11/03/2020 07:26

We use plain haricot beans

ALemonyPea · 11/03/2020 07:31

Definitely find. I do it all the time (sauce included) as my DH thinks he will die if he eats an uncooked kidney bean Hmm

AufderAutobahn · 11/03/2020 07:36

I use both kidney and baked beans (with most of the bean sauce drained away before putting them in). I would in the past have considered it an abomination but it made chilli so much nicer for my child when he was small.

Luckystar777 · 11/03/2020 07:37

Nah I prefer kidney beans in it. Baked bean sauce is full of sugar and messes my blood sugars up terribly.

BodiesMakeForGoodFertiliser · 11/03/2020 07:41

Uncooked kidney beans can indeed make you really, really ill. And you need just few to feel effects.

EdersonsSmileyTattoo · 11/03/2020 07:54

I put baked beans and kidney beans in mine, I was the kidney beans off but not the baked beans.

I’ve always done it like this and we love it, like a PP though I’ve never claimed it to be an authentic chilli.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 11/03/2020 08:03

Yech! STBXPoisonousSIL does that. It really changes the taste and texture of the meal. It isn't gross, just not chilli and is really surprising (in aa bad way) if you are not expecting it!

But it is just another of those Anglicised dishes, I suppose.

concernedforthefuture · 11/03/2020 08:05

I've used them before in an emergency - I just rinsed the sauce off in a sieve. They were ok but would use kidney beans as a preference.

BaronessBomburst · 11/03/2020 08:07

This is the 80s way of making it. Kidney beans weren't available in tins. You had to soak and boil them and they came with warnings on the packet that they could be poisonous if not prepared properly. Baked beans were safer, quicker, and less foreign.

BaronessBomburst · 11/03/2020 08:09

So how about this one: curried beans.
Tin of baked beans, half teaspoon of curry powder, and a handful of sultanas. Serve with sausages. That's a 70s favourite!

nornironrock · 11/03/2020 08:09

Firstly, no, it is not ok to put baked beans in.

Secondly, the only time it is acceptable to have beans on a plate is if that plate of food is destined to be consumed by someone under the age of 7.

8 at a push.

Next you'll be saying you use ketchup on food that is not chips!!!!

AgnesNaismith · 11/03/2020 08:11

NO Envy (vomit)

TheHagOnTheHill · 11/03/2020 08:15

Ketchup is for cheesy things only, cheese on toast, cheese sandwich. Not for chips.
Sometimes do put a bit in my chilli if it needs a tomato boost.

BarbaraofSeville · 11/03/2020 08:38

I just put whatever beans we have in, but baked beans in sauce make the chilli sauce a bit richer.

Unless I have some random weird beans I want to use up, I normally do tin of kidney beans, tin of chick peas (controversial but I like them and don't care if it's not authentic) and half tin of baked beans with peppers, onions, tin tomatoes and some meat or quorn mince.
