Baked beans in chilli con carne - a moral outrage?

I was talking about chilli con carne earlier and someone mentioned using baked beans instead of kidney beans and I wasn't convinced by the idea. I'd now really like to know what's normal! Do you think using baked beans in chilli con carne is culinary sacrilege, a bit gross or that's what everyone does?

A moral outrage and a culinary horror.

Vinosaurus · 11/03/2020 15:44

I also use a can of Heinz 5 beans - including sauce.

ArfurianLegend · 11/03/2020 17:19

Kidney beans, baked beans (both drained and washed) in mine. Most US recipes use tinned (vegetarian) baked beans, I think, but they come with molasses, so they add a particular flavour and gloopy texture.

Spieluhr · 11/03/2020 17:32

Didn't think of it like that @tartyflette, good point. But you could still just use cannellini beans which is what baked beans are made of in the first place.

Baked beans are haricot beans.

Meckity1 · 11/03/2020 17:36

We call it chili con charlie in our house. It's not a proper chili, just onions, mince, baked beans, lots of spices, served with whatever, made quickly, inexpensive and almost healthy.

It's comfort food over here.

Emmelina · 11/03/2020 17:47

Probably a waste with the tomato sauce, and they’d go mushy. Haricot beans (the beans used in baked beans) would work though.

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 11/03/2020 17:48

Of course its fine half and half is great

I'm American. I have never seen a chili recipe in the US that calls for baked beans. Most call for kidney beans; they just come in a can, no sauce of any kind in the beans.

BodiesMakeForGoodFertiliser · 11/03/2020 18:18

Also adding chilli and beans to bolagnaise to make chilli, surely that's normal.

Normal in here maybe but certainly not right. I don't know how people cook chili here but that would be missing quite a few important flavours

BodiesMakeForGoodFertiliser · 11/03/2020 18:19

Plus also depends on what goes into the said Bolognese.

MyNameHasBeenTaken · 11/03/2020 18:20

Feeling lonely now
Am I the only person on here who hates baked beans. And kidney beans. And chillies. And haricot beans. And that orange sauce?
But green beans. I love green beans.

thequeenbeyondthewall · 11/03/2020 18:34

Baked beans in chilli are vile.

I hate baked beans.

tadjennyp · 11/03/2020 21:09

I like pinto beans in mine, or taco mixed beans. Baked beans are too mushy and sugary, imho.

StrawberrySquash · 12/03/2020 10:36

I put all sorts of beans in chilli. I don't tend to bother with kidney beans as I'm not that sold on them. Give me a chickpea or a cannellini bean any day.

UnspeakableBode · 12/03/2020 10:52

NO!! That's a crime against chilli, but I despise baked beans, however no authentic chilli recipe would be seen dead with baked beans in! Confused

Yesterdayforgotten · 12/03/2020 11:27

@MyNameHasBeenTaken no you're not! I hate all kind of beans apart from green beans! I do like chillis but only if chopped finely and mixed in.

CecileMilkins · 12/03/2020 18:58

Far nicer than kidney beans IMHO!

SmallPinkBear · 12/03/2020 19:25

I hate kidney beans so my mum always used baked beans - I do the same (including the sauce)

berryhead2013 · 12/03/2020 19:32

Heinz bbq beans in chilli are good

northernlittledonkey · 12/03/2020 19:33

I always use beans in bolognese and chilli.

lazylinguist · 12/03/2020 19:36

Baked beans in bolognese?

ChristmasFluff · 12/03/2020 20:32

Baked beans is fine in the absence of kidney beans.

but I'll tell you what's better. Chick peas. If it's sacrilege, I don't care.

ChristmasFluff · 12/03/2020 20:33

Ooops, should add my chilli is always made with Quorn, so no idea how chick peas work with meat mince

kingkuta · 12/03/2020 20:34

Baked beans are vile. Would be disgusting in chilli. The thought of it knocks me sick bleeeuuugh

EmmaBridgewater20 · 12/03/2020 20:48

I think it’s yummy myself, I don’t put them in every time though, just if I’m doing more of a casual chilli with a jacket p - DH calls it’s dirty chilli (with baked beans) or posh chilli without (and with green pepper) 🤷‍♀️
