AIBU to wear a poncho?

Just that really.
Was trying to find something high necked this morning in a vain attempt to hide the fact that I’ve ran out of a lighter foundation and I ended up discovering a long forgotten poncho.
I stood in front of the mirror for a while before concluding that I looked fucking ridiculous.
Are ponchos still a thing?
Should I rock it? I did used to live in it.

And yes, before anyone points out, this is possibly the most trivial AIBU ever.

You can't possibly have looked ridiculous. Ponchos look good on EVERYONE.

I have 6.

willowpatterns · 10/03/2020 21:30

I had one. In about 1975 Grin

IcedMatchaLatte · 10/03/2020 21:34

They're back in style apparently —saw a couple going down the runways at Milan Fashion Week.

GoatyGoatyMingeMinge · 10/03/2020 21:35

At the risk of being shouted down, many people would regard ponchos as cultural appropriation. Just something you might want to think about.

willowpatterns · 10/03/2020 21:40

Oh don't be so silly.

The people who invented ponchos can now be seen sporting t-shirts and trainers. Should we say that's cultural appropriation as well?

Blankiefan · 10/03/2020 21:44

I have a working from home poncho. Throw it over your PJs, and you're ready for your videoconference!

BitOfFun · 10/03/2020 21:48

I made the mistake of complimenting a teenager on her poncho by saying she reminded me of Clint Eastwood. The look she gave me could have curdled milk.

Watermelontea · 10/03/2020 21:53

Ponchos are great, you can’t be unhappy in a poncho.
I have a lovely one from Superdry, it’s a lovely colour and pattern, and it’s very warm.
My mother told me it was ridiculous, so I wear it whenever I go anywhere with her.

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 10/03/2020 21:56

I have about 7 or 8 ponchos and wraps, I wear them with skinny jeans and ankle boots, they make me feel very elegant when I’m wafting around!

Probably no one I know/would take seriously so it’ll be ok if I do don one tomorrow!

I'd love one. But not quite sure if I would go fashionable and plain colour and try to be cool. OR accept the fact that in my deepest heart I want to be a cowboy and wear one with my cowboy hat I bought in Australia but rarely wear.

Other people look cool in ponchos. And they are so practical and warm. And definitely stylish.

I wore one when pregnant and just looked fatter. How would you style a poncho so that you don't look bigger than you are?

Carblover · 11/03/2020 10:23

When I read that I spat my tea out laughing I have a number of ponchos and definitely always rock them out.... whether I look ridiculous or not is not for me to say...except do i careGrin but ask you have you looked around the streets around you lately on what people go out wearingShock
Come join us and wear your poncho with attitude and pride Smile

Isthistrueor · 11/03/2020 10:24

You can never be unhappy in a poncho Grin.

PineappleDanish · 11/03/2020 10:31

Cultural appropriation? FFS. World has gone mad.

Love a poncho.

ChateauMargaux · 11/03/2020 10:41

I had two when I was pregnant and totally regret getting rid of them, especially a beautiful heavy knit one. Since then I have bought two more and knitted myself one. There are only a few days I can wear them... not cold enough to need full coverage of a coat... not raining... but cold enough to need a warm outer layer. I make the most of those days!!

Cissyandflora · 11/03/2020 10:50

Poncho. The word though. Poncho.

JustInCaseCakeHappens · 11/03/2020 10:58

I wear ponchos, I had no idea we won't supposed to? I still wear them.

I am not wearing the plastic waterproof ones though, but it doesn't mean people shouldn't.

FreezerBird · 11/03/2020 11:00

Reading this thread has made me feel that
a) the word poncho has lost all meaning and is just a noise in my head
and
b) I don't think I know what one is any more... I have lots of things I call wraps (and which were marketed to me as such) which probably fulfil the definition of poncho*. But in my head a poncho is more blankety, and probably quite highly patterned.

*one of them is Harris Tweed. Culturally appropriate that if you can.

antwacky · 11/03/2020 11:05

I love ponchos, I have two that I wear and I still have the one that was bought for me when I was kid back in 1969.

Sooverthemill · 11/03/2020 11:07

I have a cashmere poncho DH bought me Which is lovely but I've not worn it because I can't decide whether it is an indoor or outdoor garment. It's fine not chunky ( chunky would be outdoor). Ideas?

CheerfulBunny · 11/03/2020 11:46

I had a lovely fine knit dark green poncho and used to wear it with a crisp white shirt and dark skinnies. I felt dead snazzy until a bloke of vague acquaintance commented on my appearance then started singing 'Robin Hood, Robin Hood, riding through the glen...'
I went off it a bit then. Sad

FilledSoda · 11/03/2020 14:29

I have a garment that if laid flat would be a long rectangle with a cut up the middle . So the long bit goes down my back and the two flaps go over my shoulders. Is that a poncho ?
Should it be a big square / rectangle with just a head hole ?
I have both , in summer and winter weights .
I've been compared to a Jedi but I soldier on .
I'm boggled at it being cultural appropriation though, that would never have occurred to me.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 11/03/2020 15:28

I love a poncho!

And yes, I'm wearing one today (striped). Perfect for spring when it's too cold to go without, but too warm for my thick winter coat.

Long live ponchos!
