AIBU to wear a poncho?

PardonWhat · 10/03/2020 18:28

Just that really.
Was trying to find something high necked this morning in a vain attempt to hide the fact that I’ve ran out of a lighter foundation and I ended up discovering a long forgotten poncho.
I stood in front of the mirror for a while before concluding that I looked fucking ridiculous.
Are ponchos still a thing?
Should I rock it? I did used to live in it.

And yes, before anyone points out, this is possibly the most trivial AIBU ever.

Ooh what's it like, 2bees . I need poncho knitting inspiration! Well, actually what I need is to finish the blanket and socks I'm already making, but I want poncho inspiration!

GreenWheat · 11/03/2020 16:31

Love a poncho! But what to do if you need to wear a coat over it? Remove poncho first, or stuff poncho into coat sleeves?

2beesornot2beesthatisthehoney · 11/03/2020 16:41

NosyLazy Appalling selfie but this is it. It has a square front knitted in the round in 3 coordinated colours.
The blonde lady wearing it is from the pattern itself. It's called Linen poncholette on Ravelry.

2beesornot2beesthatisthehoney · 11/03/2020 16:43

Actually I think I need to block mine as well as weave in the ends.

bridgetreilly · 11/03/2020 16:44

I knitted one a couple of months ago and I have worn it almost constantly since. It's the best!

bridgetreilly · 11/03/2020 16:45

This is the pattern I used. It is SUPER easy: www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/easy-folded-poncho

Aderyn19 · 11/03/2020 16:47

I love the idea of them but do you just carry your handbag underneath? Does is not look too bulky?

bridgetreilly · 11/03/2020 16:49

With mine it works to carry a shoulder bag over it, but my current handbag I usually hold over my elbow, and it sits under the poncho. It's been so easy to wear and never got in the way at all.

PixieDustt · 11/03/2020 16:56

Oh gosh no! Bin the poncho!
Didn't realise they were still a thing anymore in all honesty.
Don't forget your sombrero Grin

JustInCaseCakeHappens · 11/03/2020 17:02

why wouldn't they be "a thing"? They look great and you can buy them pretty much anywhere.

Bag wise, go on pinterest, anything goes!

bridgetreilly · 11/03/2020 18:49

Not all ponchos look like they should come with a sombrero.

PineappleDanish · 11/03/2020 18:56

I have a garment that if laid flat would be a long rectangle with a cut up the middle . So the long bit goes down my back and the two flaps go over my shoulders. Is that a poncho

I asked EXACTLY the same question on a shift in a charity shop last week when I pulled one out a donation bag. I was reliably informed that no, it was not a poncho, it was a serape. Pronounced seh-rah-pay.

So there you go.

LuckyLickitung · 11/03/2020 19:04

I've got one that was brilliant when I was too pregnant to wear maternity clothes over the winter when December was frozen up for the whole month.

I still have it, but in a non-pregnant non-super-thermal state, it's the kind of thing that I can't work out when to wear it as it's too drafty to wear outside and not compatible with a coat.

NotTheMrMenAgain · 11/03/2020 19:06

I've never been able to pull off a poncho - think it's because I'm quite petite (code for a short-arse). I always feel swamped by them and feel a bit Clint Eastwood-y. I'm rather jealous of taller poncho-wearers.

francienolan · 11/03/2020 19:46

I have a lot in cashmere--like 9 or 10 colours of the same one. I love them! Make sure you get the right length. Too short can look a little awkward as can too long. Also I find them cosier than cardigans and jumpers especially in my very cold office building.

lazylinguist · 11/03/2020 19:49

That looks fab, 2bees! And bridgetreilly - I was eyeing up that very pattern on Ravelry this afternoon after being inspired by this thread!

lazylinguist · 11/03/2020 19:50

bridgetreilly - did you make the version with or without the cowl bit?

TrueFriendsStabYouInTheFront · 11/03/2020 20:00

Argh I put my really nice black poncho in a bag for charity and now I'm tempted to go and retrieve it before I take the bag to the chaz Confused

PardonWhat · 12/03/2020 08:01

Loving the poncho talk. Thanks all.
The home made poncho is fab.

Without the cowl. But you can knit it to that point and then decide whether or not you want to add the cowl at the end.

GrannyBags · 12/03/2020 08:29

I’m wearing mine now. I’ve seen loads recently - are they having a resurgence?

lazylinguist · 12/03/2020 09:15

I'm thinking the barrier to poncho wearing for me atm is the weather. It just bloody rains all the time (I live in Cumbria, so not a rarity here). Ponchos and rain coats do not work well together! And it's often too windy for an umbrella.

lazylinguist · 12/03/2020 09:15

TrueFriends - noooo! Rescue the poncho!

GrannyBags · 12/03/2020 09:19

@lazylinguist
😂 I’m a bit further south than you (Lancs) but weather is the same. I wear my big duvet coat to walk to work and put the poncho on when I get there.
I know what you mean about umbrellas though - I moved here from London and killed 3 umbrellas in the first month.
