AIBU to wear a poncho?

Just that really.
Was trying to find something high necked this morning in a vain attempt to hide the fact that I’ve ran out of a lighter foundation and I ended up discovering a long forgotten poncho.
I stood in front of the mirror for a while before concluding that I looked fucking ridiculous.
Are ponchos still a thing?
Should I rock it? I did used to live in it.

And yes, before anyone points out, this is possibly the most trivial AIBU ever.

I had a crocheted one when I was about 10 in the early 70s, in navy, pink and white stripes. God I loved it. And my mum had an emerald green one.

Rock it OP.

Slipped mine on to nip to Tesco yesterday. At the checkout the chap behind me started to whistle 'The Good, the Bad and the Ugly'. Within a few minutes the whole queue were giggling. Really cheered up my day! (I'm not easily offended).

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 12/03/2020 10:11

yes, to @FilledSoda and @PineappleDanish it's a serapé

I had one in a fleecey material, shades of purple with a hint of the ethnic Clint Eastwoods about it....I got rid of it years back and it's one of my biggest regrets.

Only buggerance with those is keeping them secured, you really need a burly brooch or pin

bags go over ponchos ...it helps stop any billowing

And I am back to Amazon browsing viking brooches now...just the very dab for a chunky knit serapé :o

GrannyBags I know what you mean about umbrellas though - I moved here from London and killed 3 umbrellas in the first month.

I feel your pain. The annual rainfall here is more than double where I moved from. I'm surprised I haven't yet developed webbed feet tbh.

At the checkout the chap behind me started to whistle 'The Good, the Bad and the Ugly'.

You have inspired me to dig out mine and wear it today, it's so lovely and warm!

Bananasandchocolatecustard · 12/03/2020 12:37

You could fasten a poncho with a kilt pin.

iolaus · 12/03/2020 13:11

Im currently wearing one - it is my house poncho though (because it's got minnie mouse ears on it) but I have one for outside too (grey knitted)

Somanysocks · 12/03/2020 13:24

Oh I had a crocheted one in the 70's too, in bright pink with white tassels.

Nowadays though I would be worried about tripping over and getting my hands caught in it and smashing my teeth out 🤣

5foot5 · 12/03/2020 13:52

Golly I remember I had one when I was about 7. Green and black. I think we got it in Wales.

I haven't thought about wearing one for years. Sorry if I sound clueless but I assume they are only for wearing outside of the house instead of a coat? Don't they make it difficult to use your arms? Can you have pockets with them?

I have been looking for another crochet project so this appeals but I don't want to take the time on it if I then don't wear it.

Anyone got photos of them showing how they can be used in a practical day-to-day way?

MulticolourMophead · 12/03/2020 14:00

I was recently thinking I'd like a poncho, so I think I'll crochet one.

MulticolourMophead · 12/03/2020 14:03

5foot5 A lot of ponchos have a ribbed neckline, so I'm looking at finding or adapting a pattern to a button up style neckline, as I think it would be more practical.

Sidge · 12/03/2020 14:17

@NotTheMrMenAgain I too am a shortarse yet have a collection of ponchos!

Mine come to just below my bum or upper thigh. I think if they come down to your knees you just look ridiculous - well I do anyway, like I’ve wrapped myself in my granny’s blanket.

I love my ponchos, I have loads, different colours and knits. Some smooth knit, some chunky, some have a “collar” and some are just a slit for the head.

Perfect for when you don’t want to wear a coat but need something more than just a top or jumper. I love mine. No one has ever whistled The Good, the Bad and the Ugly theme tune at me yet.

lazylinguist · 12/03/2020 16:34

Don't they make it difficult to use your arms?

Mine don't. The two longer bits are at the front and back, plus because ponchos are loose, you can move your arms freely.

Fluffybutter · 12/03/2020 17:02

Never worn one but was some nice ones in m&s not long ago.
I’d wear a posh scarf if my face didn’t match my neck but luckily I ordered some of my ‘winter’ foundation so I don’t look like a cut and shut ..

xanthippe8 · 12/03/2020 20:34

Always got treated like a shoplifter whenever I wore one back in the 80's, must've been the eyebrows!

lazylinguist · 13/03/2020 08:01

Right - sunny but a bit chilly today. Definitely breaking out the poncho!

lazylinguist · 13/03/2020 08:02

Oh and thanks to this thread I spent aaages yesterday titting about on Ravelry looking at poncho patterns! Hmm Grin

MulticolourMophead · 13/03/2020 09:37

@lazylinguist me too, I can get lost in all the patterns 😁😁

bridgetreilly · 13/03/2020 16:25

Hahahaha! I highly recommend the one I linked earlier. It is super-easy but comes with several possible variations, and it knitted up quickly and is so easy to wear. It does not look like it needs a matching sombrero, either.

Patroclus · 13/03/2020 16:55

I bloody love ponchos. I swish arond the house in them and pretend im a saxon warlord

Matildalamp · 13/03/2020 17:30

I live in Shetland, so many beautiful Fair Isle ponchos! You should look up niela nell knitwear. So lovely, and more contemporary than the traditional Fair Isle.

luckylavender · 13/03/2020 17:31

I love a poncho

LittleCandle · 13/03/2020 17:33

The company I work is selling a lightweight poncho in 4 different colours. Last year I couldn't sell them for love nor money and this year they are walking off the hangers.

MulticolourMophead · 13/03/2020 18:00

bridgetreilly sadly, I can't knit 😁, but I can crochet.

lazylinguist · 14/03/2020 09:20

Matildalamp - I'd love to make a Fairisle poncho. I'm fascinated by Fairisle and the tradition of it (and have a book about it and a couple of pattern books), but I'm a slow knitter and a Fairisle poncho would probably take me about 17 years to make. Grin
