Should I get a taxi to A&E

I have multiple gallstones and am awaiting gallbladder removal surgery.

Currently experiencing a horrid gallbladder attack. Been in pain since 22;00 but the tramadol is wearing off. Will admit it's not the worse attack I've ever had. Very very uncomfortable though.

Worried if I go in and take some more I won't be in so much pain and am wasting their time or the next load of tramadol will kick in and I'll feel alright again.

It's also my 30th birthday today.and DS dosn't sleep well without me here (bought him into our bed with me and DH earlyer because he's a general terrible sleeper)

YABU - stay home, take more tramadol. Woman up.

YANBU - get a taxi to a+e and pray they decidde to remove gallbladder tonight as a birthday present instead of waiting another 4-6minths on the waiting list.

I've got hot news for you, @Fedupofdoingit: gallbladder problems for which pain relief has been prescribed don't stop people using their brains or hands.

Sadly, other conditions like being gratuitously unpleasant on social media do seem to affect the use of the brain.

Frownette · 09/03/2020 10:34

I hope you find out soon OP and you get the op - are husband and son coming in later?

@Poppinjay I honestly think some people don't like others getting attention

Iooselipssinkships · 09/03/2020 10:43

To those who didn't think you shouldn't go to a&e have never had a gallbladder attack.
Christ, I'd never been in as much pain in my life. I was clawing at my bathroom floor in agony until the ambulance arrived.
Once in hospital it was a struggle to get my pain down, so they operated within two days of me being admitted.
Just be aware they use gas to blow you up during the op and when that is expelling it's also really bloody painful.
I hope they get it out for you soon, you have my sympathy because I know just how bad it is. You share the same birthday with my son, Happy Birthday! xx

ZarkingBell · 09/03/2020 10:46

Happy Birthday!

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 09/03/2020 10:58

It’s the lack of logic of some of the snippy posters that amuses me.

Poster - you can’t be ill you are using your phone
vs
Doctor - you are ill and we will try to schedule your surgery today

I wonder which one might be correct!

longtimelurkerhelen · 09/03/2020 11:00

This will be the best birthday present if they do the op today. Grin

The gas coming out didn't really hurt me, I found the slight discomfort from the op was nothing compared to the extreme (putting it mildly) pain of the gallstones attacks.

Hope they do it today. Happy Birthday.

Vinipote · 09/03/2020 12:06

A couple of nasty bitches on here with no productive advice. Ignore them @Hileni
Happy birthday to you Flowers and a speedy recovery. Hope it gets sorted for you today Smile

SimplySteveRedux · 09/03/2020 12:26

I have Post Cholecystectomy Syndrome - essentially gallstone attacks following gallbladder removal. Only IV Morphine was touching the pain, I'm now on a battery of strong opioids and other painkillers to keep me out of A&E.

Gallstones are brutal, worst pain I've ever had. Should go to A&E if the tramadol aren't helping, you can get "lucky" and have the gallbladder removed within a couple of days of admission.

LovePoppy · 09/03/2020 12:35

Thinking of you OP

BlingLoving · 09/03/2020 12:45

I was you 10 years ago. I also have a hiatus hernia and sometimes telling the difference between the pain was hard - at this point, they thought it was all the hernia. On one occasion, I resisted going to A&E as I was embarrassed I'd been a few times before. I also discovered I was low on the strong painkillers. Eventually I spent 2 hours waiting to see a doctor in a walk in clinic, hoping just to get the prescription I needed and/or the super strong gaviscon they can give you. He took one look at me and sent me straight to A&E where I was admitted with a raging gallbladder infection. My overwhelming memory is of the relief when they finally gave me the morphine via drip. I was nil by mouth for 4 days.

Sadly, in my case, it took a bit longer to get the surgery as my gallbladder was too inflamed at the time and there were a couple of other things going on. But I hope you get yours ASAP because it is life changing!

Throckmorton · 09/03/2020 12:47

Happy birthday and may you soon be gallbladder free! I hope you are coping OK with the hospital setting - it must be tough after what you've been through.

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 09/03/2020 12:49

This isn't something I thought I'd say to anyone but I hope your birthday present is surgery. Happy birthday!

gingersausage · 09/03/2020 13:12

@SimplySteveRedux how did you get this diagnosed? I’ve had four attacks since my cholecystectomy of what I can only describe as “gallbladder attacks” but obviously that’s not possible, and I’ve had so many tests but no one has even mentioned this.

trinity0097 · 09/03/2020 13:26

Gallbladder pain can be so bad I almost called an ambulance from my hospital bed as the nurse on the ward had given me all she was allowed. The on-call night doctor refused to come, she even went to his break room to try and get him, in the end she got into bed with me to try and soothe me. He came after about 3 hours immediately prescribed something strong and the pain vanished immediately! I then had a drain put in for 6 weeks until they operated.

FloofenHoofen · 09/03/2020 13:31

@gingersausage do you have bile duct stones? They're common within three weeks of having your gallbladder out. You'll need a endoscopy to check that.

OP my doctor told me that if I ever had an attack (when I had my gallbladder) to go straight to hospital as morphine is the ONLY thing that will stop the pain. Nothing else works.

I've had mine out since 2017 now. I'm glad I did.

Darbs76 · 09/03/2020 13:38

Yes go. I ignored my gallstones at first and i ended up with a damaged pancreas, permanently, I now have chronic pancreatitis which is more painful than my gallstones was. Not to frighten you, but gallstones can cause pancreatitis and you need to be careful. Get some bloods done and some pain relief

Darbs76 · 09/03/2020 13:39

@gingersausage - have you considered it could be sphincter of oddi dysfunction? This can occur after gallbladder removal. I have that aswell as chronic pancreatitis (gallstones damaged my pancreatic duct which in turn damaged my pancreas)

Defenestratethecat · 09/03/2020 13:50

Hileni, hope you aren't online because you're being prepped for your op. I had my gallbladder out about 6 years ago - the relief! Recovery was amazingly fast (keyhole surgery).

DSis had hers out after being bluelighted to hospital with morphine - worst pain she's ever felt and that includes birthing 2 large babies!

You'll be able to have birthday cake with no fear of painful repercussions!

Fingers crossed you're operated on today.

MrsDrudge · 09/03/2020 13:50

Happy birthday. Enjoy some lovely celebrations with your family when this is over and you are feeling better.
Speedy recovery!!!

Hileni · 09/03/2020 13:56

Happy birthday to me!! I'm on the surgical ward and they are operating this afternoon! Had a massive cry of relief and then a massive cry if anxiety. Won't be going home until tomorrow which is terrifying me but at the same time happy? It's a bit confusing.

Will update laster after the op where I'll probably be a bit if a state as it will be like last time. Luckily the ward is much bigger and I'm by a window!

My daughter didn't go to hospital when she had 8 hours of pain and was being sick and two consultants at the hospital she worked in told her off because it could have been an infection or blocked and a medical emergency .

Northernsoullover · 09/03/2020 14:01

Cheery bye gallbladder! Hope you soon feel a lot better. Plan something nice for your belated birthday celebrations when you come round.

KingaRoo · 09/03/2020 14:02

That's great news, don't worry all will go well and you'll be so relieved once it's gone and you can just concentrate on recovering. Remember, they do these operations every day and while it's a big deal to you it's not to the surgeons!

MrsStrangerThing · 09/03/2020 14:02

Good luck op Flowers It will be ok, I am so glad they are operating today.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 09/03/2020 14:05

Good luck. I’m glad you got that taxi!
