To want to buy hand wash

ChipsCheeseAndBeans · 06/03/2020 15:46

Not even after hand sanitiser. Just some hand wash as we are almost out. The shelves in my local supermarket are completely bare. There are not even any bars of soap left.

Feeling annoyed at the panic buying! Just shop as usual.

I've got a stockpile of gorgeous soaps from all the hotels I've stayed at. This is the ideal time to use them up.

Treaclepie19 · 06/03/2020 15:54

I've been to 6 shops just to get some soap.
Thankfully we do have some that I'd forgotten about but I was quite frustrated.

NiteFlights · 06/03/2020 15:55

My local Asda was completely out of handwash today. Luckily I wanted a bar of soap, but YANBU, it’s infuriating.

Bluewavescrashing · 06/03/2020 15:56

Don't most people have soap at home usually? I've got about 8 bars spare at any time. Bought them ages ago and they last much longer than hand wash.

Washing up liquid is essentially soap although it may dry your hands out. You can just use a tiny drop.

Bunnybigears · 06/03/2020 15:58

Washing up liquid or shower gel will do.

mrsbyers · 06/03/2020 15:58

Just use shower gel or bath foam

ReverseGiraffe · 06/03/2020 15:58

Yep. I went to ASDA to pick up my prescription (antibiotics). I needed some paracetamol because I'm in a lot of pain. Nope. Shelves completely bare. Did consider picking up some night nurse but I'm breastfeeding so didn't want to risk it in case.

BeyondMyWits · 06/03/2020 15:59

Check your local independent pharmacies... ours has hand wash, bar soap, loo roll galore. No hand sanitiser left, but no-one seems to...

Namechanger20183110 · 06/03/2020 15:59

Have you tried a big Wilkos store?

Curiosity101 · 06/03/2020 15:59

I wonder why people are panic buying handwash, could anyone hazard a guess? Hand sanitiser I sort of get, even though most don't work on viruses, but hand wash?

aintnothinbutagstring · 06/03/2020 16:00

Yes to previous poster, washing up liquid particularly as apparently the virus has an oily outer layer, and washing up liquid probably better than most soaps for cutting through oil and grease.

aintnothinbutagstring · 06/03/2020 16:01

Paracetamol and ibuprofen stocks have been dodgy since before christmas, nothing to do with coronavirus.

Lima45 · 06/03/2020 16:02

I grabbed two at our local b&m this morning. They had loads (one for me, one for elderly parents, not stockpiling)

I'm pretty sure my area hasn't cottoned on yet though, all of our shops have plenty of soap and toilet rolls etc. Just hand sanitiser that's out of stock everywhere and that's only since people have realised that other areas have been out of stock for a while...

Bluewavescrashing · 06/03/2020 16:03

It's a bit worrying if hand washing is such a new thing to so many people 😳🤢

DobbyTheHouseElk · 06/03/2020 16:03

I’ve got bar soap left over from Christmas presents.

SerendipityJane · 06/03/2020 16:03

I've been to 6 shops just to get some soap.

If everyone did that, no wonder the virus is spreading ...

DobbyTheHouseElk · 06/03/2020 16:04

Do people really not use soap? We get through loads of hand wash/bar soap a week.

picklebarrelfalls · 06/03/2020 16:07

In my experience of trying to buy some dettol today, avoid the smaller stores and head straight for the Big Shops.
Went to the small Sainsbury's (not a 'local' but not a main store) and they had nada but I was going past the Big One and I'm assuming they're sending all the new stock there, there were barely affected.

Treaclepie19 · 06/03/2020 16:07

@SerendipityJane would it be better if I couldn't wash my hands?
They are all within 10 mins in the car. 4 of them walkable.

Curiosity101 · 06/03/2020 16:09

@Bluewavescrashing This is the only thought I've been able to come up with to explain why people are panic buying handwash...

Paracetamol and Ibuprofen I can understand as you anticipate using more of it cause you're anticipating getting ill.

Toilet paper - I guess cause if you run out and you're ill then that would suck

Hand sanitiser - Sure, most people probably don't use this day to day.

But hand wash? Surely most people have a bottle at each sink in the house and use it regularly anyway? Why would you suddenly start using more at home?

Treaclepie19 · 06/03/2020 16:11

That's what I don't get @Curiosity101... why are people buying so much right now?!
We buy soap on our weekly shop which is what I was trying to do today.

slipperywhensparticus · 06/03/2020 16:12

The cleaning aisle is decimated too so all those people not cleaning there houses either

TowerRingInferno · 06/03/2020 16:15

No hand sanitiser but shelves fully stocked with hand wash, soap, paracetamol etc at my nearest big Boots today.

WorkWalk · 06/03/2020 16:18

Go to somewhere like Lush?

1forAll74 · 06/03/2020 16:20

There is going to be a great increase of plastic bottles being thrown away now,all over the world, just use soap and water to wash your hands.
