To want to buy hand wash

ChipsCheeseAndBeans · 06/03/2020 15:46

Not even after hand sanitiser. Just some hand wash as we are almost out. The shelves in my local supermarket are completely bare. There are not even any bars of soap left.

Feeling annoyed at the panic buying! Just shop as usual.

Where does everyone live? I wonder if the shortages are a local thing?
I’m in Lancashire. I’ve been in 1 Aldi and 2 Tesco’s today and a Sainsburys Local yesterday (not panic buying - promise).
None of the shops had hand sanitiser and were low on hand wash, but were otherwise fully stocked - cleaning products, toilet rolls, rice, pasta, ibuprofen, paracetamol etc. etc.

GreenGrecianVase · 06/03/2020 17:47

The person who mentioned cargo flights, there’s loads of Flybe planes sitting around doing nothing .

Ginfordinner · 06/03/2020 17:47

Unless you have allergies please use bars of soap, and not stuff that comes in plastic bottles. Soap is as effective or better than handwash.

HasaDigaEebowai · 06/03/2020 17:50

Soap is better than handwash particularly in this scenario. People will touch the dispenser with their dirty hands and do the virus can survive on there and be transmitted. That doesn't happen with bar soap. Studies have shown that viruses don't move from soap back onto hands.

Mammatino · 06/03/2020 17:53

A woman had a trolley full to brimming of andrex she got some tuts off the older ladies this morning. Everything else was fine except no handgel. Try b & m or the local poundshops, primark does hand sanitiser and I think garages stock it too. It's all very over the top but every time you turn the TV on there's a serious looking person scaring the shit out of everyone.

WhereverIMayRoam · 06/03/2020 17:54

IME some people really are filthy and their just shop as usual actually doesn’t include soap/handwash/anti-bac products very often. My bil and sil who have 4 dc rarely have soap in their bathroom when we’ve visited yet are now bulk buying the stuff. My colleague who I’ve seen walk out of the work toilets without washing her hands on probably a dozen occasions over the years is now frantic about ensuring she’s well stocked with soap and hand gel Hmm. So all these people who wouldn’t ordinarily buy much soap are now plus extras in case they have to self isolate.

Maybe the silver lining to all this is that the public learns basic hygiene!

But you need staff to fly them (and risk jetsetting) plus facilities to handle them and (crucially) people to pay them. I have very little idea about the differential between km/kg when shipped or flown, but last time I dabbled, we were talking something ludicrously cheap for sea freight- 100$ for a TEU from China to here. I imagine it's of an order of thousands more for air freight.

JRUIN · 06/03/2020 17:55

I got a 4 pack of soap delivered with my Asda shop yesterday no problem.

Sexnotgender · 06/03/2020 17:55

Do people not usually wash their hands? Why such a big run on something that everyone should have already?!

sadatchristmas1 · 06/03/2020 17:58

It's ridiculous I work for a major retailer we have been out of hand sanitiser for nearly 2 weeks we have no liquid soap, hardly any bar soap and anti bacterial spray/wipes as quick as we put it out people are buying it in bulk. Don't get me started on toilet rolls we have been cleared out the last 3 days running! As quick as the dcs get it to us we are putting it out and the locusts descend and buy it all. Customers are complaining the majority are just having a moan but I had a woman shouting at me today that we need to limit how much people can buy, stood there with a trolley full of toilet roll and bleach. It's been a stressful week and there won't be a let up until we get instructions to limit sales. Then we have the arguements to look forward to as people will not listen I'm sure 😱

Northernsoullover · 06/03/2020 17:58

I don't wash my hands enough. I admit it. I wash them after the loo or before and during food preparation but until the Coronavirus outbreak I didn't wash them when I came home from work or the gym. I am certainly washing them frequently now!

OkMaybeNot · 06/03/2020 18:03

It's strange, all the pump nozzle handwash bottles have sold out near me, yet perfectly adequate bars of soap are being left on the shelves Confused

WeirdAndPissedOff · 06/03/2020 18:05

Apparently a lot of the empty shelves are due as much to online sellers as panic buyers - you can find sellers with multiple bottles of hand gel etc for £20 plus.

I actually think in this case the preppers would have had a positive effect if any. There was always going to be stockpiling and panic buying once the virus levels started to "pop" in the UK, those who bought sparingly in advance are a few less who are buying now, and with any luck may have even prompted stores to increase their stock.

Howdy1212 · 06/03/2020 18:07

Tbh i think YABU. People are buying up supplies because they want to protect their families should there be a pandemic and we need to be indoors more. I dont think it is unreasonable, annoying yes, but if the worst does happen and we all rush to the supermarkets its going to be every man/woman for themselves and the shelves will be bare then too.

Like you, I've struggled myself but managed to find a bottle in a boots out of town and wilko if that helps

Wordofwarning · 06/03/2020 18:08

I have hideous tooth ache after some emergency work. No pain killers anywhere 😞 screw you stockpilers.

Riv12345 · 06/03/2020 18:10

I was in a pharmacy yesterday picking up my prescription,

Loads of painkillers, hand gel everything!!!

Redcrayons · 06/03/2020 18:14

I’m sure they’ll all be restocking over the next few days and there’ll be loads around next week.

ChristmasFluff · 06/03/2020 18:14

No craziness where I live, but even if there was, I knew those gift sets would come in useful one day! Seriously, have you thought of checking charity shops for gift sets?

TheFairyCaravan · 06/03/2020 18:15

They had loads in our Aldi last night. The shelves were well stocked. The only thing that they didn't have was the 24 packs of toilet roll

voddiekeepsmesane · 06/03/2020 18:15

Was in the supermarket today doing my usual Friday shop. We need soap. None on the shelf but a keen eyed customer got her husband to get some up on top of the shelf still in their 10 pack carton and proceeded to put all 10 in their trolley!! when they saw several of us just watching them they shrugged and offered us 1 each which still left them with 6. Selfish bastards. Like OP says just shop as usual

Katyy · 06/03/2020 18:17

So annoying. All I needed was hand soap, went to three shops and can’t get pump soap or even a bar of soap. The worlds gone mad !

ShirleyPhallus · 06/03/2020 18:25

Really freaks me out that people are only starting to wash their hands now there is some virus around

Can’t believe people actually need a reminder to wash their hands when they should be doing it anyway...

Ilovemypantry · 06/03/2020 18:29

Shops should put a limit on how many bottles of handwash/sanitiser each person can buy. Absolutely ridiculous the way some people panic buy

SeaViewBliss · 06/03/2020 18:45

We’ve just done our weekly shop in Morrisons and there wasn’t a single roll of toilet paper!!!!

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 06/03/2020 18:54

With my soap box which I’ve been adding to for about three years,, I’m feeling slightly smug.
Wish I’d collected loo roll in the same way.
