I wish Ebay would add a category to report these arseholes.

If some twat wants to buy a 47p product for £19 then knock yourself out. Darwin's theory at play there.....

But seeing OAPs asking in shops for this knowing some utter low life has bought the entire delivery to sell on eBay gives me rage.

I bet Ebay love their cut. I would report it but theres no category.

Arseholes. Yes I am aware I need to get a life and go back to looking for a last minute fucking world book day costume in my dress up pile of doom, but this is why I hate humans and hope viruses kill our species off somedays

The people trying to sell for high prices are probably the ones that took all the stock from shops. I really hope that manufacturers produce more quickly and that they are left with loads of stock that they can't sell.

PurpleDaisies · 04/03/2020 14:25

Took all the shops by buying it legally?

PurpleDaisies · 04/03/2020 14:26

Sorry words missing! They took all the stock from shops by buying it legally...

user1497207191 · 04/03/2020 14:28

Sigh. It's a VIRUS. Anti-BACTERIAL gels aren't really going to help that much UNLESS they're high in alcohol.

Just because you saw that on Twitter doesn't make it true and you really need to do your own research before repeating it as fact.

sleepingpup · 04/03/2020 14:29

@chocolateteapot20

sigh. every single one of the mini hand sanitizer gels I have bought for my family from various sources is over 70%

sigh. sick to death of people lecturing on here who clearly don't have a clue on a practical level.

Some people don't get near water during long stretches and work where it would be totally inappropriate to have a flask or bucket of water or god knows what else.

Falcor40 · 04/03/2020 14:33

This has been on Amazon

People selling what looks like 6 antibac gels. For near on £30!!!! And receiving 1!!!! A tiny one too

Shocking.

Fraggle45 · 04/03/2020 14:33

There's 1 brand in stock online in boots if anyone else is struggling

I've managed to order 3 x 50ml for £6

woodchuck99 · 04/03/2020 14:33

It doesn't matter if they bought it legally. If they bought it with the intention of making those who feel that they are vulnerable to this virus unable to buy it (i.e. price gouging) so that they could sell it on for an inflated price it is amoral.

Yummymummy2020 · 04/03/2020 14:36

@sleepingpup I’m gobsmacked at how adamant people are with information that’s totally incorrect and not evidence based at all. It’s really frightening actually that there is so much information circulating that is a load of rubbish. A lot of jobs don’t have access to a sink and soap easily when you need it there and then! I totally agree with you!

sleepingpup · 04/03/2020 14:42

@Yummymummy2020

Totally.

Hand washing is always best but sometimes on here you'd think using Hand sanitiser as an in between fall back was like

sleepingpup · 04/03/2020 14:42

was thinking the earth was flat.

Welshmaenad · 04/03/2020 14:56

This is driving me crazy. I carry antibac gel because my job requires me to be in and out of hospitals and care homes as well as people's homes where they may be unwell. I am immunosuppressed. I use it because there's not always anywhere to wash my hands and I use the gel as an interim measure on entering and leaving until I can wash my hands. I use it primarily to ward off bacterial infection because I'm a reasonable human and understand that I'm the gel isn't effective against viruses.

So I can't get hold of a product I use to keep myself well because it is being panic bought by idiots to use against something it's completely ineffective against anyway.

Disquieted1 · 04/03/2020 14:58

Coincidentally I went to Aldi to buy this handgel earlier today. They usually do a box of 24 @ 49p each. Anyhow, there weren't any on the shelves or by the tills so I asked a manager where they were - he told me that they had deliberately taken them off the shelves to keep them for their own staff to use.
Probably a good thing. They handle all the food and all.

LadyLindaT · 04/03/2020 15:03

Purely out of interest, I put all the ingredients that would be needed to make hand sanitiser into an Amazon bag.
By the following morning, all the ingredients had gone up by at least £2. They are now all sold out.
Pure profiteering.

People are just too lazy to factcheck. They hear something once, it sounds smart, so they start repeating it. And it spreads. Here's another one repeating it in the very midst of a conversation about it being untrue!! :

"Most hand gels have a high enough alcohol concentration to kill viruses."

I wouldn't really advocate using pure alcohol, it was just to point out that many commercial hand gels may not be high enough in alcohol to make a difference. And interestingly I can find plenty of comparisons for US products, but strangely this data seems to be missing for the UK, and at the moment I don't have the time to look at product sheets to compare every one on the market in Great Britain. Carex is one that does have a high(ish) alcohol content, although it's still only around 70%.

The FDA has recently issued a warning against one manufacturer (Purell) for claiming that their products can help prevent Ebola and 'flu. But who knows, maybe it can save the world from COVID-19! www.nytimes.com/2020/01/28/health/purell-fda-ebola-virus.html

I didn't see it on Twitter. Have a look at the links I posted. I live with a nurse. I advocate evidence-based arguments in everything, combined with lived experience.

Yes, but in this case you're wrong, @chocolateteapot20. I thought the same as you, but the nurse in my family confirmed what I've read and heard over the last few days (including from public health officials), that as long as the alcohol level is high enough, it will help break down the coating of the virus to render it harmless. And yes, the vast majority of gels are around 70%, whiich is plenty.

chocolateteapot20 · 04/03/2020 15:46

Then I stand corrected; would you mind sharing the evidence-based link your relative has used so I can update my own relatives/friends? I'm guessing it's NHS, WHO, CDC or similar?

woodchuck99 · 04/03/2020 15:47

Have you ever looked at the ingredients or is your knowledge just based on what you have read on the Internet.?I have looked quite a few and most are around 70% alcohol.

saraclara · 04/03/2020 15:51

Hygiene experts, the NHS and Public Health England all agree that to kill most viruses, a hand sanitizer requires at least 60% alcohol content (most contain 60-95%). For those with sensitive skin, there are now options that don’t contain alcohol.
Sally Bloomfield, a professor at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, says that viruses are much more resistant to disinfectants than bacteria. Luckily, she says, coronavirus is an envelope virus, meaning it has a coating around it which the alcohol can attack, thereby eliminating the threat. (Norovirus and rhinovirus, by contrast, do not).

The one that sells in Boots (cuticura) is only 57.6% so I don’t know why that’s sold out.

People saying hand washing is better...sure but you can't just wash your hands whenever you want...

It's shocking and it gives me the rage. Absolute low lives.
