Legoandloldolls · 04/03/2020 10:45

I wish Ebay would add a category to report these arseholes.

If some twat wants to buy a 47p product for £19 then knock yourself out. Darwin's theory at play there.....

But seeing OAPs asking in shops for this knowing some utter low life has bought the entire delivery to sell on eBay gives me rage.

I bet Ebay love their cut. I would report it but theres no category.

Arseholes. Yes I am aware I need to get a life and go back to looking for a last minute fucking world book day costume in my dress up pile of doom, but this is why I hate humans and hope viruses kill our species off somedays

what type of dirtys bastards were we before the outbreak!

woodchuck99 · 04/03/2020 13:06

YABU. They’re not doing anything wrong; they’ve been very clever. Wish I’d have done it

You think there's nothing wrong with exploiting the elderly and others who feel they are at high risk from this? Nice.

cheesemongery · 04/03/2020 13:10

what type of dirtys bastards were we before the outbreak!

Haha too true, peanuts on the bar riddled with other peoples piss... YUM!

Over the years and with a weakened immune system anyway I have become more aware of what I am touching and what it might harbour - cash machines and trollies, phone sharing at work - my manager keeps the work mobile in her bra ffs!! I don't want to touch that, not through fear of covid19 but because it's been on her sweaty breast.

I'm thinking bleach wipes with vodka.

Femail · 04/03/2020 13:15

I use hand sanitizer anyway due to working in retail and dealing with money and the public all day. Some customers need to go and have a shower as there personal hygiene lacks.

chocolateteapot20 · 04/03/2020 13:23

Sigh. It's a VIRUS. Anti-BACTERIAL gels aren't really going to help that much UNLESS they're high in alcohol. You might as well go and buy a bottle of surgical spirit or cheap vodka.

Washing your hands with soap and water is rather more effective. I do feel sorry for the poster whose hubby is a cab driver; contrary to popular belief, NOT everyone is able to access soap and water on demand. Not everyone works in a nice cosy office!

The only way round this is to maybe carry a bottle or flask of water, some soap and tissues with you. And anyone who's ever done the "light box" experiment, where you see HOW badly you wash your hands, will know that pretty much all of us are rubbish at washing our hands anyway. People don't understand fomites either.

And I do have to laugh, a lot, at something pretty obvious that is missing from the government's official Coronavirus poster. It tells you to wash your hands when you get home or to work; when you eat or handle food; when you blow your nose, sneeze, or cough. See which one's missing?!

I'm now watching the whole COVID-19/The Stand/Contagion drama, stoked-up-by-the-ever-so-obedient-media with grim fascination. I live with a nurse. They work mostly with the elderly. They're not unduly worried about our risk levels, but then neither of us are within the "danger age range" or have underlying respiratory issues - if it were a rotavirus, now, we might feel differently....And this is not to imply they don't care about their patients. They do. Very much.

This whole saga is highlighting one or two things that many people might not have realised until recently, like how reliant the whole world is on China for raw materials for so many medicines, and just how connected we are in this global village the powers that be have been telling us is so utterly fantastic since, well, forever.... and that's before the supply chain is affected (we're in the early days of that now).

(On the subject of profiteering, what about those very same "old dears" now getting their knickers in a twist profiting from years and years of house inflation??? You know, just as another example. Yes, I know the theory is that house profiteering doesn't kill people. I can think of a few [no longer with us] homeless folk who might not necessarily have agreed though....)

kateandme · 04/03/2020 13:26

sisters cab driver had a hot flask of hot water and some soap with him which he was regually using and getting filled at services

Sofonisba · 04/03/2020 13:27

Sigh. It's a VIRUS. Anti-BACTERIAL gels aren't really going to help that much UNLESS they're high in alcohol. You might as well go and buy a bottle of surgical spirit or cheap vodka

A quick google says that a gel with 60% alcohol will kill most viruses, including coronavirus. And that most handgels contain 60-95% alcohol.

So I think the sigh is unnecessary. Feels like someone recently came up with this idea that hand santisers don't kill viruses and now everyone is just running with it to sound clever. I find it's always a good idea to research things a bit before repeating them as gospel.

Most hand gels have a high enough alcohol concentration to kill viruses. Vodka doesn't usually though and surgical spirit would dry the the hands too much.

chocolateteapot20 · 04/03/2020 13:39

It's the fact that most of the sanitisers you can buy are NOT high enough in alcohol to have the effect people think they're going to. It needs to be 60% alcohol or above. But that's what happens when people listen to the media and panic. And a virus is different from a bacterial infection. It's one of the reasons antibiotics in the world aren't effective against the 'flu.

Have a look at www.cdc.gov/handwashing/show-me-the-science-hand-sanitizer.html, www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/29266912 and www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/30020626 just as a couple of examples.

More than happy to provide plenty of other evidence-based examples if anyone would like them. In case anyone's wondering about the authority of those examples, one is from the CDC and the other two are from Pubmed (free MEDLINE, effectively, which collates medical evidence from "proper" medical journals like the Lancet, BMJ, NEJM and lots of others, dating from the 1950s to today, and constantly updated).

whyisitsoflammingdifficult · 04/03/2020 13:41

@chocolateteapot20 Typically viruses are more resistant to disinfectants than bacteria, but coronavirus is an enveloped virus, so it has an outer membrane formed of oil and fat

All enveloped viruses are very susceptible to soaps and detergents, which explode the outer membranes, rendering them ineffective

Alcohol can also effectively attack the structure. The NHS and Public Health England both agree that to kill most viruses, a hand sanitiser needs at least 60% alcohol content – with most containing 60-95%.

However, hand sanitisers won’t get rid of certain types of germs, dirt and chemicals, whereas soap will, which is why hand-washing is preferred

Legoandloldolls · 04/03/2020 13:43

My mums house has gone up in value due mainly to inflation. She bought it for 5k when dad was earning about 2k a year. It's now worth 180k but dad was on £100 ph when he died so that's not really the same kind of thing.

Society should be judged on how we treat are old and disabled. You might not not die of covid but you bet your life you will get old, possibly with dementia or a stroke.

Robuns · 04/03/2020 13:44

The vast majority are 70%, even the colourful carex ones which look more like accessories. And yes most places will eventually have toilets and sinks, depending where you are going though it could be a good 20 minutes at least before you reach one, or around here you have to get a code from a cafe for the toilet in town meaning you have to buy something every time you want to wash your hands; no thanks. People touch stuff and their faces more than they realise, it should not replace handwashing but it's always interesting how against it some are, even when it doesn't affect them what other people do.

Gadgnkk · 04/03/2020 13:45

It is horrible to try to profit from coronavirus. We are a scummy species.

KisstheTeapot14 · 04/03/2020 13:46

Washing hands whilst out...damp facecloth with anti bac soap squirted on in plastic bag. Its like a wet wipe you can wash and wash again! At 60 degrees most likely.

Holland and Barratt promoting home made sanitizer using witch hazel (alcochol?) or vodka with tea tree and bit of vit e oil. Sounds good to me as something to use in between washing hands. A good 20 seconds wash, youtube 'handwashing for doctors' to see tips.

YANBU by the way.

Legoandloldolls · 04/03/2020 13:48

Aside from the anti bac and this is a virus debate, people just need to listen to phe / NHS advice.

I know why alchol.kills viruses due to being a biology grad but I am happy to just take NHS/ phe advice. I know knowing about other things I'm happy to take from the NHS at face value

KisstheTeapot14 · 04/03/2020 13:49

on second thoughts, facecloth may be best as one off use, I guess virus could survive unless facecloth is soaked in vodka Grin

KisstheTeapot14 · 04/03/2020 13:55

I'm sure WHO give advice about catching a sneeze or cough in the crook of your arm to avoid spray. Better than in your hand!

Delicatelyscentedflavour · 04/03/2020 13:58

Use soap. Carry water and a small towel with you.

Justaboy · 04/03/2020 14:00

So they'll be an outbreak of hubby just stopping off at the Kings head on the way home so's he can dunk his mitts in some best Russian hoochey poochy eh;?.

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 04/03/2020 14:01

I have antibactiral spray (bought it a few weeks ago due to something unrelated to Coronavirus) . Would that be an effective handwashing thing ? Might as well use it anyway really I suppose .

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 04/03/2020 14:02

Oh, its for humans, lol . Bought in chemist.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 04/03/2020 14:07

People do this with loads of things. Anything that people think will be in extremely high demend, will always attract people who bulk buy and sell on. Same thing happened recently with the daft aldi carrot from the adverts. People are thick as mince.

Quirrelsotherface · 04/03/2020 14:12

Complete thicko's, probably with no other source of income to speak of.

ChicChicChicChiclana · 04/03/2020 14:16

Yanbu. The ebay sellers turn my stomach with their utter cynicism and selfishness. Cunts the lot of them. My mother is 88 and has copd. Too right I'm worried about coronavirus.
